10 awesome martial arts fights in the snow

Craig Lines Dec 6, 2017

Christmas and martial arts movies? They rarely crossover. But amazing fights in the snow? Now we're in business...

I love martial arts movies and I love Christmas so I'm kinda sad that the two have never really come together (Kung Fu Panda Holiday doesn't count). I'd hoped to find at least one good example to write about, as we move into the festive period, but I guess since most martial arts films come from Buddhist countries and Christmas is a Christian holiday, I was destined for disappointment.

I did briefly consider making one up with the aid of Photoshop, but wasn't sure I could get away with it so, alas, The 25th Advent Chamber Of Shaolin is not to be. For what it's worth, I'd got as far as an apprentice monk named Ho, fighting his way through 25 'doors' of a giant temple designed to resemble an advent calendar.

The Best Movie Fight Scenes — IndieWire Critics Survey

The Best Movie Fight Scenes — IndieWire Critics Survey
Every week, IndieWire asks a select handful of film and TV critics two questions and publishes the results on Monday. (The answer to the second, “What is the best film in theaters right now?”, can be found at the end of this post.)

This week’s question: In honor of the bone-crunching “Atomic Blonde,” what is the greatest movie fight scene?

Read More‘Atomic Blonde’: How They Turned One Amazing Action Scene Into a Seven-Minute Long Take Erin Oliver Whitney (@cinemabite), ScreenCrush

I’ve got a soft spot for wuxia so the “best fight scene” immediately evokes Zhang Yimou in my mind. I could list every fight in “Hero,” sequences so spellbindingly beautiful and graceful you forget you’re watching violence. The bamboo forest battle from “House of Flying Daggers” is another all-timer, a mesmerizing fight that almost entirely takes place in the air. And the bone-crunching, table-smashing

China Abuzz Over Local Talent Invited to Join Academy

China Abuzz Over Local Talent Invited to Join Academy
Chinese media were abuzz Thursday over the record number of Chinese filmmakers and actors who have been invited to become new members of the Academy, with some commentators saying that it could boost the country’s chances of winning an Oscar.

But others said that the Academy’s decision to include more Chinese and Asian faces was an effort to boost diversity rather than a bow by Hollywood to China, and that the new Chinese additions would have a negligible impact on Chinese films’ Oscar prospects.

Fourteen industry heavyweights from mainland China and Hong Kong are among the 774 new invited members. The news made headlines throughout Greater China.

“China raves over record number of Chinese filmmakers to join the Academy,” one headline declared.

The 10 invitees from Hong Kong are actresses Maggie Cheung (“In the Mood for Love”) and Carina Lau (“Days of Being Wild”); actors Tony Leung (“In the Mood for Love”) and Donnie Yen (“Ip Man

Matt Damon's Great Wall Bombs in the U.S., Loses $75 Million

The big-budget epic The Great Wall was billed as the largest ever co-production between the U.S. and China, with Legendary Pictures and its distribution partner Universal Pictures equally financing the $150 million movie with Chinese-based companies China Film Group and Le Vision Pictures. It seems that The Great Wall may also be the last U.S.-China co-production, with the film tanking at the domestic box office with just $34.8 million from just two weeks in theaters. A new report claims that Legendary will lose $75 million from the film, with Universal losing $10 million as well, putting the future of U.S. and China co-productions at risk.

The Hollywood Reporter reveals that, while Legendary, Universal, China Film Group and Le Vision Pictures each financed 25% of the film, Universal was solely responsible for the global marketing budget, which is, "conservatively estimated at $80 million-plus." The big-budget action thriller opened first in China back in December,

The Great Wall Review

  • TheMovieBit
Chinese/American co-production, The Great Wall, is the most expensive movie shot in China, and even just watching the opening 20 minutes of Zhang Yimou’s (Hero, House of Flying Daggers) it’s easy to see why. The titular land mark stretches out as far as the eye can see, as legions of coloured armoured soldiers pirouette off the top while in battle with CGI monsters. To say this movie looks pretty is an understatement, but unfortunately, what it has in style eclipses anything resembling substance. The story thrusts us back in time to medieval China, where Europeans William (Matt Damon affecting an accent that flits between Irish, English, and Scottish at the drop of a hat) and Tovar (Game of ThronesPedro Pascal) have travelled in search of fabled ‘black powder’. Falling foul to a travelling horde of bandits, the pair are soon taken in by the Nameless Order, an

Lego Batman Wins Weekend #2 at the Box Office with $34.2M
After easily conquering highly-anticipated sequels Fifty Shades Darker and John Wick 2, Warner Bros.' animated spin-off Lego Batman Movie faced three newcomers in its second weekend at the box office. The animated spin-off will go up against Universal's big budget action epic The Great Wall, starring Matt Damon, Warner Bros.' comedy Fist Fight starring Ice Cube and Charlie Day and 20th Century Fox's A Cure For Wellness starring Dane DeHaan. As expected, The Lego Batman Movie retained its spot atop the box office with a better than expected $34.2 million

While there are certainly many factors that lead to The Lego Batman Movie staying on top of the box office, one of these factors is that it is still playing in hundreds of more theaters than any of these newcomers. The Lego Batman Movie debuted in 4,088 theaters last weekend, which, according to Box Office Mojo, remained unchanged this weekend. reporting
