With Blake deciding to return to Boston to teach full-time and Prentiss declining the request to return, Hotch is interviewing for the vacancy on the team. Who he hires is a known entity to the team, namely Kate Callahan. Her first case working for the BAU takes them to Bakersfield, California, where three human torsos have been found in deserted locales within the past month - one male and two females. The medical examiner is able to determine that the limbs were removed with precision, that the victims had leather in their digestive tract, that they were kept alive up to 48 hours after the limb removal and the torsos had been preserved. The team soon discovers that the unsub has sold some of the limbs on the black market. Those sales and the identities of the victims may provide some clues as to the unsub's identity and location. At the end of the initial briefing Reid tells Garcia to search for suppliers using keywords sodium dioxide (NaO2) and silicate. Sodium dioxide would be negatively trivalent (-3) and an extremely reactive/volatile chemical, dangerous to handle if possible for the theoretical use of combining it with radioactive elements in the positive trivalent category. Sodium is univalent, positively charged at 1+ while oxygen is divalent, charged -2. The only possible combination is sodium oxide, Na2O, which is used with silicon dioxide in glass making. Glass making would have no relevance to preserving body parts. Silica gel may, but would be an impractical choice for a large specimen. Its only reference seems to be for preservation of insects and naturally occurrence in fossils. A perplexing scientific error. See more »

Found a goof!
6 May 2019 | by nealacooperSee all my reviews

Where is Detective Reid's scar? He recently got shot in the neck, on the right side. There was lots of blood. It just happened, storyline-wise. It was kind of a big deal.

In X, during the briefing the camera is close on his right profile, and Reid has no scar on his neck. I love the attention to continuity that the writers and directors pay in Criminal Minds, but this stuck out like a sore (forgive me) neck.
