The final black and white still shot at the very end of the movie is not Puerto Rico, where the movie takes place, but Aruba. The author is shown sitting on a bench at the Aruba Palm Beach Club with a bottle of Amstel beer. The Aruba Caribbean Hotel, in the background, was the first resort hotel constructed on Palm Beach. The author visited Aruba while living in Puerto Rico. The photo is also the book's cover photo.
During filming, Bruce Robinson and the film crew were sweating so much, that a crew member brought iced Coronas on-set. He described his drinking in that moment as "savage", and never drank again after filming.
Sanderson's bejeweled tortoise that was inspired by "a book he read once" is a reference to Joris-Karl Huysmans' novel À rebours, a favorite book of Bruce Robinson's. In that novel, the tortoise rather quickly dies, because it cannot handle the weight of the gems.
