Box Office Powerhouse Toei Aims for a Renaissance

Box Office Powerhouse Toei Aims for a Renaissance
Born of a merger between two film companies in 1951, Toei is one of Japan’s leading film producers, distributors and exhibitors, with a wide range of media businesses. Starting in the 1950s with samurai swashbucklers and continuing in the 1960s with actioners featuring Japan’s native gangsters, the yakuza, Toei gained a reputation as maker of entertainment for the masses, not the critics.

Rival Toho may have had Kurosawa Akira and Shochiku, Ozu Yasujiro — both world-class auteurs — but Toei had Ishii Teruo, whose “Abashiri Prison” action series (1965-’72) made a major star of the strong-but-silent Takakura Ken, and Fukasaku Kinji, whose “Battles Without Honor and Humanity” series (1973-’74) was a groundbreaking re-creation of a real-life yakuza war. Neither won many awards or much international recognition at the time, but their contributions helped make Toei a box office powerhouse. Beginning in the 1950s and continuing in the 1960s as the diffusion

PlayStation: The Best & Worst Thing About Each Console

PlayStation: The Best & Worst Thing About Each Console
Second only to Nintendo and their line of systems, the PlayStation lineage is perhaps the most iconic in gaming console history. This is not only because they have constantly brought gamers exemplary consoles, but also have an array of spectacular exclusive games, too. Yet, that does not mean that gamers should ignore their top-of-the-line third party games, too. This mix of positive elements is what allows this company to remain immensely successful when it comes to its overall sales. Its latest console, the PS5, also effectively displays just how much they are progressing as a company, too.

Crazy, Crazy, Game!: Makoto Tezuka's "The Legend of the Stardust Brothers"

Crazy, Crazy, Game!: Makoto Tezuka's
Makoto Tezuka's The Legend of the Stardust Brothers (1985) is playing exclusively on Mubi starting March 18, 2021 in many countries in the series Rediscovered. It’s ironic that Legend of the Stardust Brothers, a film about the meteoric rise, fall, and disappearance of two pop idols, nearly suffered the same fate as its protagonists. A giddy live-action cartoon full of surprising cameos, the film’s plot is sketched around insanely catchy tunes by eclectic pop musician and TV personality Hauro Chikada mocking industry, government, celebrity and scene drama. The anarchic musical was the first feature from up-and-comer Tezka, nee Makoto Tezuka, who at 22 had already garnered national attention for his creative shorts. Family name recognition probably didn’t hurt, as he was also the son of “God of Manga” Osamu Tezuka (creator of “Astroboy”). The film is a charming time capsule of Japan at the dawn of its booming bubble economy, and

The Legend of the Stardust Brothers review – 80s Japanese bubblegum pop curio

The Legend of the Stardust Brothers review – 80s Japanese bubblegum pop curio
Even with a glorious mishmash of a pop soundtrack, it’s not obvious why Makoto Tezuka’s cult musical needs a revival

A curio that’s lain dormant for many years since it first sashayed on to screens in 1985, this Japanese teeny-bop musical supports the argument that not all cult films need to be revived. Ultimately, some were flops the first time round for good reason. That said, lovers of Asian kawaii culture, camp and Japanese bubblegum pop, which all converge in this confection, are likely to be satisfied.

Like so many of pop-tastic exploitation projects (see also the Monkees’ Head), the music comes first and the story splicing it all together a distant second. Musician-impresario Haruo Chikada composed the soundtrack of cheesy, synth-heavy bop and then hired director Makoto Tezuka to string the songs together into a script. Et voila, the confection they came up with this is a

Moments of entry by Anne-Katrin Titze

Moments of entry by Anne-Katrin Titze
David Thewlis as health inspector Jim Davis in Atom Egoyan’s absorbing Guest Of Honour

Guest Of Honour is the story of restaurant health inspector Jim Davis (David Thewlis) and his daughter Veronica (Laysla De Oliveira), a high school music teacher who finds herself in prison. Anything but linear, the film touches on many aspects of social interactions that a year ago seemed normal. Restaurants in Atom Egoyan’s movie are fighting not to be shut down, because for some that would mean the end of their existence.

Anne-Katrin Titze: Guest of Honour leaves many gaps so that I in the audience felt a bit like the child Veronica [Isabelle Franca, as an adult played by Laysla De Oliveira] trying to figure out what is going on with the adults. How can I put these puzzle pieces together? Am I missing something? Am I making things up? Which is great

PlayStation 5 Review

PlayStation 5 Review
It’s easy to forget because if how hard it is to actually buy one, but the PlayStation 5 is finally here. With it comes Sony’s hopes to not only further the legacy of the PS4 but surpass the success of arguably one of the most beloved consoles of the last 20 years.

While few consoles have written the final word on their legacies so early in their lifecycles, it’s rare that a console gets to make a successful second impression after a bad launch. A console’s debut not only sets the tone for the rest of its run, but it tells you whether or not it’s worth actually investing in an expensive new platform.

Since we were lucky enough to receive a PlayStation 5 from Sony, we’re going to help you answer that question by breaking down nearly every facet of the PS5. Is the next-gen console

Everything That’s Free On The PS5 Right Now

Everything That’s Free On The PS5 Right Now
The moment gamers have been waiting the last 12 months for has finally arrived. Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5 are now in the hands – assuming you managed to get a pre-order in, of course – of those they were intended for, ushering in an all-new generation of adventures boasting unparalleled visual fidelity, performance and scope. Microsoft and Sony may be somewhat late to the party, so to speak, for those who primarily consume their games on high end PC rigs, but with the minimum bar now raised (and last-gen retired), folks from all camps can expect to see publisher and developer alike push the boundaries of what was thought possible.

Naturally, it’ll take some time for those endeavors to bear fruit and, for the moment, at least, platform holders are supplementing the general lack of next-gen exclusives with a bevy of improved and/or upgraded ports. Taking a leaf out of

White Stripes Soundtrack an Animated Love Story in Video for ‘De Stijl’ Classic ‘Apple Blossom’
The White Stripes have released a new animated video for their classic fan favorite track, “Apple Blossom,” in anticipation of the duo’s upcoming greatest hits collection, out December 4th.

The clip for the De Stijl cut was directed by the celebrated cartoonist Wartella and uses a paper cut out/silhouette style — rooted in the White Stripes’ classic red-and-white color palette — to tell the story of a distraught woman who flees on a boat and washes up on an island occupied only by a man in a lighthouse. PlayStation 5 Review In Progress: Color Us Impressed

PlayStation 5 Review In Progress: Color Us Impressed
Coming off the wildly successful PlayStation 4, it’s safe to say that Sony has been under a lot of pressure to deliver with their next-gen hardware. Not only did the PS4 crush the competition in terms of sales numbers, but it was home to a sizable number of top tier console exclusives, and it also provided gamers with an entry-level VR experience that is still receiving new releases to this very day.

But unlike the Xbox Series X (which is a fantastic machine in its own right), Sony is looking to shake things up a bit with the PlayStation 5. Rather than simply slapping a fresh coat of paint over their tried-and-tested ecosystem, they’re hedging their bets on an entirely new user interface, a completely redesigned controller, and what is arguably the largest console we’ve seen in quite some time. It’s by no means the safest route, but

PlayStation 5: Best Features of the DualSense Controller

PlayStation 5: Best Features of the DualSense Controller
The PlayStation 5 has already made its way into the wild as media members, celebrities, and other industry figures already have their hands on the next-gen console and its DualSense controller.

Actually, it’s the DualSense controller that’s making the biggest impression so far. While early PS5 owners only have access to one next-gen title at the moment (built-in platformer Astro’s Playroom), that game effectively serves as a showcase for both the abilities of the PS5 console and the many ways that the console will be defined by the abilities of its controller.

That may sound sensationalist, but a quick rundown of the DualSense’s best features reveals why Sony’s new controller may just be next-gen gaming’s best.

DualSense’s Triggers Can “Fight” Against You

The most amazing thing about the #PS5 so far is the wild #DualSense controller.

It feels like the mid-point between the DualShock4 and Xbox controller,

Nicolas Cage Rumored To Be Circling A Role In The McU

Nicolas Cage Rumored To Be Circling A Role In The McU
Nicolas Cage and comic books go way back, and his entire life and career have been heavily influenced by his love of superheroes. The actor initially took his stage name from Luke Cage in an effort to distance himself from the Coppola dynasty and make it on his own, while he had to have his tattoo of Ghost Rider covered up by the makeup team when he played the title character in the 2007 film.

He also once owned a copy of Superman’s first comic book appearance that he sold for a record $2.1 million, came perilously close to portraying the Man of Steel in Tim Burton’s Superman Lives before finally getting to voice the Big Blue Boy Scout in Teen Titans Go! to the Movies, and even named his second son Kal-El.

‘Tezuka’s Barbara’ Review: Erotic Manga Adaptation Is Visually Striking but Emotionally Undercooked

‘Tezuka’s Barbara’ Review: Erotic Manga Adaptation Is Visually Striking but Emotionally Undercooked
Based on a ’70s manga by Japanese master Osamu Tezuka, a bored writer’s affair with his beguiling young muse gets the live-action treatment in “Tezuka’s Barbara.” Primarily concerned with the story’s excursions into erotic surrealism and the occult while playing down its social and political themes, this handsomely packaged item isn’t deep or meaningful but does present a visually arresting account of middle-aged male ennui colliding with uninhibited and irresistible female energy. Sure to be welcomed by Tezuka’s large fan base in Japan, “Barbara” has enjoyed a lengthy festival run since bowing in competition at the Tokyo Film Festival.

One of several adults-only tales by the legendary creator of children’s classics “Astro Boy” and “Kimba the White Lion,” “Barbara” first appeared in Big Comic magazine in 1973 and was long considered unfilmable. It has finally been adapted by Tezuka’s eldest son, Macoto Tezka, a highly

Black Adam Movie Concept Art Confirms Hawkman and the Jsa

Black Adam Movie Concept Art Confirms Hawkman and the Jsa
In what might just be the most electrifying panel to come out of DC FanDome so far, Dwayne Johnson took a few minutes to tell fans all about the upcoming Dceu Black Adam movie, the story of a slave from ancient times who gains the power of Shazam, only to find himself corrupted before his ultimate fall…and resurrection in modern times. But Johnson’s Black Adam isn’t coming alone, he’s going to have a team of heroes to share the screen with. Whether they’re enemies or allies is another story entirely.

But Black Adam won’t be facing off with the Justice League (yet). Instead, he’s going to take on the Justice Society of America, a different team of heroes from another era who are currently training the next generation. We already suspected the Jsa would make their big screen debut in this movie because

Every Confirmed PlayStation 5 Game So Far

Every Confirmed PlayStation 5 Game So Far
Sony’s wildly successful PlayStation 5 reveal gave us all the information we’d been waiting to hear about for months, including the announcement of 26 brand new games, plenty of cool accessories to look forward to and even the quite aesthetically-divisive hardware itself. We even know what the game cases will look like and how big the new DualSense controller is expected to be in comparison to the DualShock 4. Unfortunately, however, we still haven’t heard anything about a price, as it appears Sony and Microsoft are in a stand-off with one another in hopes of beating the other in value.

Because of this, we also don’t know much in the way of when we’ll get to pre-order the new hardware, but some HTML code listed on the PlayStation store seems to indicate that it’s likely to be sooner rather than later – though it appears only one console
