Ready Player Two Review: Ernest Cline’s Soulless Sequel Beats a Dead Horse

Ready Player Two Review: Ernest Cline’s Soulless Sequel Beats a Dead Horse
It doesn’t take long for Ernest Cline’s Ready Player Two to reunite gunter-turned-billionaire Wade Owen Watts with a vintage video game that holds a clue to a virtual scavenger hunt that will forever change the future of the digital, escapist Oasis. But after winning this particular game, Parzival (Wade’s Oasis alter ego) finds that he automatically starts over. Because of an extra life, he is given the option of playing through the game again, even though there are no surprises, simply to rack up extra points and because he can.

Reading Ready Player Two feels a lot like that. Ready Player One, Cline’s 2011 debut novel, delighted readers with its futuristic generation of gunters who had taken on all things 1980s with religious fervor in search of the Easter egg that would bequeath the Oasis, Willy Wonka-style, to one lucky player. The book also made some incisive

Give Comics Hope: Here’s How You Can Help Save Comic Book Stores
This article is presented by:

Often I tell my friends that if the 15 year old version of myself could know about the Marvel Cinematic Universe or that there have been three Archie-inspired TV series or that Watchmen was given a television sequel that enhances/surpasses(?) the graphic novel his head would explode. You see, I remember when comic book culture was frowned upon, considered the domain of outcasts who could never function in “normal” society. Now it dominates all.

This isn’t me being the human equivalent of the “old man yells at a cloud meme” either, just stating a fact based on personal experience…one that doubtlessly feels familiar to many of you reading this right now. As someone who had to bend over backwards to say find a bootleg VHS of Akira at a small convention tucked away in the bowels of a dingy Holiday Inn or spend

Star Trek: Discovery Season 3 Episode 3 Easter Eggs & References

Star Trek: Discovery Season 3 Episode 3 Easter Eggs & References
This Star Trek: Discovery article contains spoilers for Season 3, Episode 3. Read our review of the episode here.

As the USS Discovery starts to explore the galaxy in Star Trek: Discovery Season 3, the first stop is, understandably, to check-in on how the Planet Earth is doing. Unlike Battlestar Galactica searching for Earth forever, Discovery decided to get the whole Earth thing out of the way right away. In Episode 3, “People of Earth,” the crew returns to the home planet of the Federation and learns things are not remotely similar to how they left it.

Along the way, “People of Earth” references a long-running Tng-Douglas Adams joke, a quip from Kirk in The Wrath of Khan, a famous DS9-era alien species, and more!

700 years after we left…

Burnham’s opening narration fills in new details we previously didn’t get about the Burn, including the idea that prior to the Burn,

Desus & Mero Head Out On Virtual Book Tour To Promote ‘God-Level Knowledge Darts’
Desus & Mero, stars of Showtime’s eponymous late-night talkshow, are heading out on a book tour, virtually.

Given that touring the country is a bit tricky in Covid-19 times, the pair have set up a virtual tour to promote God-Level Knowledge Darts: Life Lessons from the Bronx, which is published by Penguin Random House on September 22.

Tickets to the experience will include the virtual live show and a pre-order copy of the life advice book. Some tickets will be available for a virtual meet-and-greet.

The ‘tour’ kicks off on August 14 in the mid-Atlantic, before wrapping up in the south on September 20.

“We want to share all we’ve learned, after years in the Bronx streets, with you: the people. So with a lifetime spent building up a plethora of information from trials and tribulations and a handful of misdemeanors, we decided to write this book—a sequel to the Bible,

The Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy: 10 Ways The 2005 Movie Was Different To The Book

The Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy: 10 Ways The 2005 Movie Was Different To The Book
This year is a pretty special year for The Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy, as it has been 42 years since the original BBC radio series was first aired. Douglas Adams later expanded his off-beat space-opera into a series of novels which further cemented his work as one of, if not the most, successful and popular comedic science-fiction series of all time.

Inside the Small Screen’s Sci-Fi Comedy Boom With ‘Avenue 5,’ ‘Upload,’ ‘Living With Yourself’

Inside the Small Screen’s Sci-Fi Comedy Boom With ‘Avenue 5,’ ‘Upload,’ ‘Living With Yourself’
Many of the best-known science-fiction comedies are parodies. Such films as “Spaceballs,” “Galaxy Quest” and “Mars Attacks!” work by skewering the genre. They are not really of the genre.

But since at least 1978, when Douglas Adams’ “The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy” premiered as a BBC radio drama, there has been a separate tradition of comedies in major media that are rooted in character as well as the ideas, language and aesthetics of science fiction — similar to the best sci-fi dramas.

“Great comedy can be about ideas, as well as jokes,” says “Avenue 5” creator Armando Iannucci. “You can have fun with both.”

Set on a passenger starship that ventures hopelessly off course, HBO’s “Avenue 5” premiered this year, part of a wave of television comedies set in science-fiction worlds. Those shows are creatures of the peak TV era, which has seen production values (along with budgets) increase across the board,

Lost Tom Baker Doctor Who Episode Will Release As An Audio Drama

Lost Tom Baker Doctor Who Episode Will Release As An Audio Drama
Doctor Who is reviving a story from one of our favorite Doctors as a Big Finish audio drama. And they’re going through the extra effort of bringing back the original cast members.

Coming to terms with a new Doctor is a challenge that all Whovians, at some point in their lives, confront. It’s a cycle that keeps repeating itself where at first you’ve yet to let go of the previous actor but ultimately end up falling in love with the new one, only for the showrunners to change things up all over again. That being said, and considering the show’s 50 plus year history, if you ask fans to choose the best Doctor, it would either be Tom Baker’s Fourth Doctor or David Tennant’s Tenth, as both have portrayed the Last of the Time Lords in a way as to stand the test of time.

The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy Gets New Vinyl Release

The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy Gets New Vinyl Release
It was 42 years ago this week that The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy made its debut as an unassuming BBC radio series written by a tall, yet largely unknown ape descendant named Douglas Adams.

The universe hasn’t quite been the same since.

Modestly successful, the first six episodes of Hitchhiker’s Guide immediately hooked listeners with its absurd views on, well, life, the universe, and everything. Although the genres of science fiction and comedy had been combined before, most notably by Kurt Vonnegut, Adams’ story hit at a time when Star Wars had everyone looking for the next big genre hit. The fact that it was brilliantly written and performed didn’t hurt matters either.

Word of mouth about the program began to spread like crazy, and the Hitchhiker’s phenomenon was officially underway. Soon, everything from a second radio series to a book adaptation to a spin-off towel

A brief history lesson: People turned to DVDs and Blu-rays because they were tired of cable television. Then streaming services came along, and these same fickle folks grew tired of DVDs and Blu-rays because who wants to go through the trouble of having to get up and physically put a disc in a machine. But recently there have been a few new wrinkles in the home viewing saga. First off, complicated rights issues means that not every movie will remain on Netflix once it's up there. Then there's the fact that there are now so

Lost Doctor Who episode heading for home release

Chris Cummins Kirsten Howard Oct 12, 2017

A Doctor Who episode from legendary author Douglas Adams will be finished via animation, featuring the voices of the original actors...

When Douglas Adams unexpectedly died in 2001, he left a monumental void in the world of science fiction. Through works like The Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy and Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency he established himself as a literary idol for an entire generation who would grow up to see many of his seemingly far-out ideas come to fruition. That phone you might be reading this article on is basically a real-life Hitchhiker's Guide, and a small reminder that as bad as things are right now, they aren't entirely terrible.

As you are probably well aware, a pre-fame Adams was a script editor for Doctor Who during Tom Baker's tenure on that series. Along with giving the show some,
