Lionsgate may have pushed the release date of The Crow remake back from June 7th to August 23rd yesterday, but they still promoted the film during their panel at CinemaCon today, showing attendees a new trailer. We don’t know when that trailer is going to be making its way online, but JoBlo’s own Lance Vlcek was in attendance and reports that the new trailer reveals more about the film’s story.
Writing from the panel, Lance said attendees were told this version of The Crow is “a complete re-imagining that is not meant to compete with the original. The Lionsgate rep made mention how the original graphic novel is different than the beloved movie and made a point that the trailer was divisive, but they want to tell this story for a new generation.” As for what was shown in the new trailer, Lance writes, “An afterlife way-station...

Plot: In 1974, an aging hitman (Liam Neeson) tries to leave his violent past behind and reinvent himself in a small, isolated town in Ireland. However, his good nature leads to him making a fateful decision that puts him in the crosshairs of an insane Ira assassin (Kerry Condon) and her cronies.
Review: I know what you’re thinking – another Liam Neeson action flick. Ho-hum. Normally, I’d be right there with you. While no one can deny he’s become the 21st century’s version of Charles Bronson, with him churning out a steady diet of B-level action flicks, not all of them are disposable in the way something like Blacklight, Honest Thief, Retribution and too many others are. Once in a while, he works with a really interesting director, such as on the beautifully photographed Marlowe by Neil Jordan. One of his better recent action flicks was definitely The Marksman,...

Update: If you’re wondering what original The Crow director Alex Proyas thought of the trailer for the remake, the answer is that he’s keeping most of his opinions to himself… but he has shared enough to confirm that his reaction wasn’t positive. Proyas took to social media to say, “‘Crow Wick’ Trailer? No comment.“
The original article follows:
Yesterday, a short teaser for the upcoming remake of The Crow dropped online with the promise that a full trailer would follow today – and, true to their word, Lionsgate has just unveiled that trailer. You can check it out in the embed above to see Bill Skarsgard in action as the new version of goth rocker Eric Draven.
Skarsgard is joined in the cast by singer FKA twigs, who takes on the role of Shelly Webster, the love of Eric’s life. Danny Huston (Yellowstone) plays the lead villain.

After spending more than a decade in development hell, a remake of The Crow (watch it Here) has made its way through production and is set to receive a theatrical release, courtesy of Lionsgate, on June 7th. A couple weeks ago, we saw the first images of Bill Skarsgard and singer FKA twigs as the new versions of goth rocker Eric Draven and the love of his life, Shelly; images that didn’t go over well with original The Crow director Alex Proyas. Now we’ve been informed that a full trailer for the film will be released online tomorrow – and while we wait for that, a (very) short teaser has made its way online and can be seen in the embed above. In this teaser, we’re treated to the sight of Skarsgard writhing around in a thick liquid that’s presumably meant to be blood. And that’s it.

Directors Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead have been busy in the Marvel Cinematic Universe lately, directing episodes of Moon Knight, Loki season 2, and the upcoming series Daredevil: Born Again – but before they entered the Marvel universe, they were known for making genre films like Resolution, Spring, The Endless, Synchronic, and Something in the Dirt. Variety reports that they’re executive producers on the upcoming sci-fi thriller Things Will Be Different, which stars Riley Dandy of Christmas Bloody Christmas and Adam David Thompson of A Walk Among the Tombstones. The film is set to have its world premiere at SXSW Film & TV Festival on March 11th, and in anticipation of that screening, a clip from Things Will Be Different has made its way online. You can check it out in the embed at the bottom of this article.

Yesterday, we saw the first images of what Bill Skarsgard of the It films is going to look like as goth rocker Eric Draven in director Rupert Sanders’ (Snow White and the Huntsman) remake of the 1994 classic The Crow (watch it Here). There weren’t a lot of positive reactions, with many fans comparing Skarsgard’s look – which Sanders said was a mixture of his own look in the ’90s, “when we were squat-raving in London,” with modern influences like Post Malone and Lil Peep – to Jared Leto’s poorly-received version of The Joker in Suicide Squad. One person who took to social media to blast the look of the new Eric Draven was Alex Proyas, who directed the ’94 version of The Crow.
Sharing one of the images, Proyas said, “Eric Draven’s having a bad hair day. Next reboot thanks.” In the comments, he continued to mock the look:...

After spending more than a decade in development hell, a remake of The Crow (watch it Here) has made its way through production and is set to receive a theatrical release, courtesy of Lionsgate, on June 7th. With that date just three months away, a trio of first look images have arrived online to show us what It star Bill Skarsgard and singer FKA twigs look like as the new versions of goth rocker Eric Draven and the love of his life, Shelly. These images originally showed up on Vanity Fair and can now be seen at the bottom of this article.

In a recent New Yorker profile, Craig Mazin, who wrote The Last of Us and Chernobyl, calls Queen’s Gambit co-creator Scott Frank “one of the best screenwriters of all time.”
Long a known quantity for Get Shorty, Out of Sight, A Walk Among the Tombstones, Marley and Me, The Wolverine and Logan, Frank opens up to the magazine about his less-recognized work: The nearly 60 films he has worked on as a script doctor, earning at times $300,000 a week.
Among the films on that less-well-known list are, according to the piece, Saving Private Ryan, The Ring, Gravity, Night at the Museum, Unfaithful, Rise of the Planet of the Apes, The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, Night at the Museum and, says Frank, “a lot of the X-Men movies.” Which ones? “I don’t remember their titles,” he said.
“Ninety-percent of what I get called in on is character work,” Frank told The New Yorker.

Pierre Morrel's 2008 film "Taken" is brazenly morally irresponsible.
"Taken" was not so much a thriller as an indulgent "dad fantasy," rooted in xenophobia and male sexual hysterics. The lead character, Bryan Mills, played by a wholly devoted and utterly capable Liam Neeson, was a divorced dad of a teenage girl named Kim (Maggie Grace) who saw his clout as a parent disappearing into the wealthy black hole of a cold-shouldered ex-wife (Famke Janssen) and her attentive new husband (Xander Berkeley). Bryan is a former CIA agent, and his job kept him away from home enough to damage his marriage. When Kim announces that she and a friend are going on an international holiday together, Bryan warns her that such an excursion is dangerous; kidnappers, he knows, often target traveling American teenage girls and sell them into sexual slavery. It sounds paranoid and everyone dismisses him.
Perhaps predictably, Kim is almost...

After years of development, “The Sandman” has arrived. Neil Gaiman’s beloved graphic novel series now exists as a Netflix series, with Gaiman serving as co-creator and executive producer on the show. Many fans weren’t sure if this day would ever come given how difficult Gaiman’s books are to adapt, with “The Sandman” at one point planned as a movie to be directed by and starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt.
Tom Sturridge fills the titular role in this iteration of the story, which finds Dream imprisoned for a century and busting out to find his kingdom in ruins. He then sets out on a journey that puts him in contact with friends and foes alike, learning to better understand humanity in the process.

Exclusive: Deadline has a pair of exclusive tracks from composer Carlos Rafael Rivera’s Season 1 soundtrack for HBO Max’s Peabody and multi-Emmy Award-winning comedy series Hacks, which is set for digital release tomorrow via Lakeshore Records.
Renewed for a third season just this morning, the series explores the evolving, dark mentorship between legendary Las Vegas comedian Deborah Vance (Jean Smart) and her young, entitled writer Ava (Hannah Einbinder).
Rivera’s evocatively melodic score for Hacks revolves around its character themes for Ava and Deborah, also heard in Season 2. “Other than having the privilege to score themes for the amazing Hacks duo that is Deborah Vance and Ava Daniels, played respectively by the incredibly talented Jean Smart and Hannah Einbinder, it is great to collaborate with one of the best comedy writing teams in Jen Statsky, Lucia Aniello, and Paul W. Downs,” says the composer of his experience on the series.

April comes to an end with minimal wide releases for the final weekend – just one, actually. This isn’t too unusual, since we’ve been seeing this sort of thing every month this year so far. In this case, it might just be the fact that no studio wants to open a movie in the week before (or after) Marvel Studios’ “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.” (Marvel famously shifted 2018’s “Avenger: Infinity War” and 2019’s “Avengers: Endgame” forward a week into late April rather than its customary May/summer movie season kick-off date.) Read on for your box office weekend preview for April 29 – May 1.

“Spider-Man: No Way Home” (Sony/$19.99) scored a second of what will be likely many weeks atop VOD charts. That comes after the film reached $800 million in domestic box office and it’s about to enter its fifth month in theaters.
Little else changed this week, with fewer films than usual finding positions on all three iTunes, Google Play, and Vudu charts. “Sing 2” (Universal/$19.99), high on all charts again, has spent more than three months at a $19.99 or higher. Like “Spider-Man,” it still ranked in the top 10 this weekend.
“Dog” (United Artists/$19.99), a much more recent release and #7 in theaters, was the third across-the-board placer. The only new entry of note was “Panama” (Saban/$6.99), an action thriller about an arms dealer in the country during the invasion. It costars Mel Gibson, with Mark Neveldine directing. It placed on two charts.
Four Best Picture nominees showed up on at least one chart.

Time is running out to stream films like “Lincoln,” “The Fisher King” and “He Got Game” on HBO Max. Below is the complete list of everything leaving HBO and HBO Max in January 2022, which includes some classic “Planet of the Apes” films, Ben Affleck’s Oscar-winning “Argo” and 1988’s “Married to the Mob,” among others. Most of these titles leave the streaming service on Jan. 31, but departing HBO and HBO Max on Jan. 20 is a behind-the-scenes look at Guillermo del Toro’s new film “Nightmare Alley,” which is exclusively in theaters now.
If you’re looking for noteworthy titles to add to your watchlist before they depart, “Lincoln” is one of Steven Spielberg’s best, “Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy” is a handsome and nail-biting spy thriller and “The Fisher King” is a great two-hander with Jeff Bridges and Robin Williams.

Back when WarnerMedia (which technically no longer exists in the same form) announced that it would be premiering its entire slate of 2021 films on HBO Max, this is the kind of month they likely had in mind. For HBO Max’s list of new releases in August 2021 is highlighted by an honest-to-goodness blockbuster.
The Suicide Squad is set to premiere Aug. 5 on HBO Max. This film featuring some of DC Comics’ most curious villains borrows its name, format, and many of its characters from the David Ayers-directed 2016 film Suicide Squad. This time around, the rogues gallery is directing by James Gunn (Guardians of the Galaxy) and his colorful disposition. In addition to The Suicide Squad, August sees the arrival of the Hugh Jackman-starring Reminiscence on Aug. 20.

To say that Liam Neeson has an impressive career is certainly an understatement. The actor has managed to boost his own iconic persona with films like Taken, A Walk Among the Tombstones, The Grey, and even playing Qui-Gon Jinn in the Star Wars universe. As well, the actor has managed to take a few chances with films like Kinsey, The Ballad of Buster Scruggs, Silence, A Monster Calls, and so much more. His latest feature called The Ice Road may take him down slightly familiar action…...

Music is typically one of the final elements created for a film or TV show, but for “The Queen’s Gambit,” it was one of the first. That’s because the Netflix hit was the third collaboration between writer and director Scott Frank and composer Carlos Rafael Rivera, who first met 17 years ago when Rivera was Frank’s guitar teacher. Rivera has since scored Frank’s 2014 film “A Walk Among the Tombstones” and the Netflix limited series “Godless,” for which he won an Emmy.
“In April of 2018, I got an email from Scott and the subject said, ‘The Queen’s Gambit.’ It said, ‘This looks like the next thing we may be doing for Netflix,'” Rivera tells Gold Derby at our Meet the Experts: TV Composers panel (watch above). “I started writing immediately because of the way I came into this world.”

As a director, Marielle Heller has been on a tear, with her first three theatrical releases — “A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood” (2019), “Can You Ever Forgive Me?” (2018) and “The Diary of a Teenage Girl” (2015) — garnering praise from critics, appreciation from audiences and Oscar nominations for Tom Hanks, Melissa McCarthy and Richard E. Grant.
This month, Heller’s two latest projects, her filmed version of Heidi Schreck’s play “What the Constitution Means to Me,” and her acting turn in Scott Frank’s limited series “The Queen’s Gambit,” have debuted on just about the only thing we have these days: streaming services. “The Queen’s Gambit,” starring Anya Taylor-Joy as a chess prodigy, is now on Netflix; “What the Constitution Means to Me” premiered on Amazon on Oct. 16 — just in time for the uproar over the Amy Coney Barrett confirmation.
Heller was an actor before she switched to directing, which is how she got to know Schreck.

The story of The Queen’s Gambit centers on orphaned young American woman Beth Harmon (Taylor-Joy), who endured a rough and cynical upbringing by embracing the game of chess, becoming a prodigious player who starts to dominate the competition circuit, and eventually reaches international levels. However, her story is an odyssey of self-destruction by way of drugs, alcohol and childhood-inflicted anxieties, all of which threaten her chances to become the best player in the world.

José Antonio Domínguez Bandera, known professionally as Antonio Banderas, is a Spanish actor, producer, director, and singer. Ok, I didn’t have to plagiarize his Wikipedia article, I know who he is. But now we have his full creative background, which can’t hurt, right?

His last turn as the character came back in 2003’s Once Upon a Time in Mexico and 17 years later, Banderas is pessimistic about whether his current age prohibits a return to his rootin’-tootin’ days.

Regardless of the premise behind the age-old foundation we still call the American Dream, not all are afforded the same prosperous outcome. Only the most powerful are granted the benefit of the doubt — the luxury to fall, reset and ultimately thrive. For the marginalized forced to kick-start their endeavors far behind on the racetrack, it’s a different story. How the intersection of race, gender and class shapes and oftentimes unjustly dictates one’s journey is eloquently examined in “Luce,” the third feature from Nigerian-American filmmaker Julius Onah.
This cumulatively unnerving psychodrama, where everyone harbors a deep secret, couldn’t be more relevant to today’s America of Black Lives Matter, #MeToo and a severely biased allocation of power. But co-writers Onah and Jc Lee (who wrote the stage play on which the film is based) take matters a step further. Stefon Bristol’s debut feature “See You Yesterday,” which has Spike Lee as one of its producers, revolves around the ingenuity of two 16-year-old friends, Claudette and Sebastian (Dante Crichlow), who are working on a homemade time machine in Sebastian’s garage. The effects in this movie are as charmingly lo-fi as the backpack modules that they wear to travel back in time for 10-minute intervals.
“See You Yesterday” nods to some of its 1980s forebears by having Michael J. Fox turn up as one of their teachers at the Bronx High School of Science. Claudette is reading Stephen Hawking’s “A Brief History of Time” in his class, while Fox has his nose buried in Octavia Butler’s “Kindred,” a popular time travel novel from 1979. The six scores vying for this year’s Emmy for music composition for a limited series, movie or special range from 19th-century tales of Canada and the Old West to futuristic stories of androids and virtual reality. There’s even a documentary about emperor penguins.

For this six-part Netflix drama based on a Margaret Atwood novel about a possible murderess in 1859 Canada, composers Mychael Danna and Jeff Danna wanted to “honor the time but put our own spin on it,” says Jeff. “We thought it needed a postmodern chamber sound”: just 12 strings, three woodwinds, harp and piano.
Oscar winner Mychael (“Life of Pi”), who has known writer-producer Sarah Polley for more than 20 years, adds: “We did write in period style, but with elements of minimalism and even trance music, using instruments that the characters in the story would have been familiar and comfortable with.”

When Carlos Rafael Rivera was an aspiring film composer and Scott Frank’s guitar teacher in 2005, the writer-director shared the Western script he was working on as a feature, and they discussed the score. “He read me a very dark scene with this evil Frank Griffin reading by the fireside, and we discussed the moment being built around C major,” he said. “And that was it.”
Later, after Rivera scored Frank’s 2014 feature “A Walk Among the Tombstones,” Rivera prepared to score that feature in the form of a seven-part Netflix mini-series, “Godless” — and decided the best score for the scene was none at all. “When that scene came up, and I was actually writing to picture, I wrote this music that had a Bernard Herrmann influence,” he said. “We ended up using no music because the performance was so good by Jeff Daniels.”

Musician Carlos Rafael Rivera first heard about “Godless” from Scott Frank in 2003, when the writer-director was a guitar student of his. “I had no idea I’d ever be working with him as a composer,” Rivera admits, since at that time he’d never written a movie score in his life. The two eventually collaborated on Frank’s film “A Walk Among the Tombstones” (2014), Rivera’s first credit as a composer, which was “an education.” Now he’s in the Emmy race for “Godless,” which is only his second score, and his first for TV. “Godless” is the smart western that nobody wanted when it was a two-hour movie. Scott Frank (“A Walk Among the Tombstones”) spent 12 years hearing “no” to his drama about a small town that lost all of its men to a mining disaster. However, once it became a limited series, Netflix jumped at the opportunity.
Frank has long been known as a hot screenwriter, in a career that stretches from Kenneth Branagh’s “Dead Again” in 1991 to Oscar-nominated turns for Steven Soderbergh’s 1998 “Out of Sight” and last year’s “Logan.” However, he never expected to become the showrunner of a sprawling TV series.
“I could watch eight movies all day for the price of a ticket and candy,” said Frank. As a kid growing up in northern California in the 1960s, his mom would drop him off at the theater for marathon movie sessions. That’s where he discovered Sergio Leone...

For costume designer Betsy Heimann, the most unusual aspect of Netflix’s western limited series “Godless” was how much it focused on “these women who were put in a circumstance where they had to improvise.” Written and directed by Scott Frank, the show follows a murderous outlaw (Jeff Daniels) hunting down an ex-protege (Jack O’Connell). His search leads him to a small town in New Mexico that, after a mining accident, is populated almost entirely by women, including Michelle Dockery and Merritt Wever. The veteran costumer was excited to “put my stamp on it by showing [women] doing all different things than you would normally” in the male-dominated genre. A competitive weekend at the UK box office saw Disney Pixar’s latest animation Coco land in first place. The film started its run with a Fri-Sun total of £3.34m, adding to £1.88m in previews for a non-final official debut of £5.2m.
That’s a middle-of-the-pack opening for a Pixar release, landing it between Brave, which opened to £5.27m in 2012, and the original Toy Story, which debuted with £4.59m in 1996. Those films ended on £22.16m and £22.49m respectively, so that’s a reasonable benchmark for Coco to aim for.

"This here's the paradise of the locust, the lizard, the snake. It's the land of the bleeding rifle."
So snarls murderous outlaw Frank Griffin in the monologue that gives Godless, the new seven-episode Netflix miniseries premiering on November 22nd, its title. Leading a pack of marauders out to terrorize and slaughter every man, woman, and child that crosses their path, he’s not merely a creature of the American West in the 1880s. MaryAnn’s quick take… Reminders to be kind are all very well, but it’s time to move past the idea that it’s up to people who are different to inspire everyone else to be better people. I’m “biast” (pro): nothing
I’m “biast” (con): nothing

Be kind, for everyone is fighting a hard battle.” This is one of the monthly “precepts” Auggie Pullman’s fifth-grade homeroom teacher shares with his students. It’s a nice rule, and yay for the vocabulary lesson of precept. And just to be sure that no one has missed the fact that Wonder has not very subtly underlined this moral over and over again, Auggie will repeat it out loud for the audience at the film’s end.
