The film was originally supposed to be set in Los Angeles but Bulgaria was so cheap to film in that producers decided to film it there. Bruce Campbell had to rewrite the movie to fit the new location.
This film took Bruce Campbell 19 years to make.
The pink Vespa that was used, then crashed, belonged to Bruce Campbell's Bulgarian interpreter, thanks to the transportation department.
There really are unfinished subway tunnels in Bulgaria and the ones seen in the film are genuine. Bruce Campbell learned of this from his location scout prompting him to re-write the reason his character travels to the country as to complete the subway system.
Was at one point considered for production with Valencia Community College's Film Program. Bruce Campbell even toured the campus.
When the script was originally set in East Los Angeles the cabbie and his murderous ex-girlfriend characters were meant to be Latin-Americans.
