The film was originally supposed to be set in Los Angeles but Bulgaria was so cheap to film in that producers decided to film it there. Bruce Campbell had to rewrite the movie to fit the new location.

The pink Vespa that was used, then crashed, belonged to Bruce Campbell's Bulgarian interpreter, thanks to the transportation department.

There really are unfinished subway tunnels in Bulgaria and the ones seen in the film are genuine. Bruce Campbell learned of this from his location scout prompting him to re-write the reason his character travels to the country as to complete the subway system.
