Afm: Sniper Drama ‘Downrange’ Scores European Sales

Mpi Media Group has closed European sales on the Ryuhei Kitamura sniper drama “Downrange” at the American Film Market.

Deals have concluded with Wild Side for France, Splendid for Germany and Benelux, Pictureworks for India, Koch for Italy, Phoenicia for Mideast, Njuta for Scandinavia, and A Contracorriente for Spain.

Produced by Genco, the film follows a group of road-tripping college students whose van breaks down along a remote stretch of highway as they fall into the crosshairs of an enigmatic sniper. Japanese helmer Kitamura is best known for directing “The Midnight Meat Train.”

The company said, “This thoroughly 21st century nightmare, featuring rawly effective performances, drags the audience into the unknowably thrilling and excruciatingly tense drama unfolding before them which is sure to be a standout at this year’s Midnight Madness.”

Nicola Goelzhaeuser, Mpi’s VP of international sales, said, “Afm has once again proven to be an important and vital market for independent films. We are

Altice Steps Into Feature Film With Agnes Jaoui’s ‘Place Publique’

Altice Steps Into Feature Film With Agnes Jaoui’s ‘Place Publique’
Altice, Patrick Drahi’s global telco and communications group, is set to co-finance Agnes Jaoui’s “Place Publique,” the company’s first investment in a feature film.

Place Publique” is produced by Saïd Ben Saïd at Paris-based Sbs Productions, the outfit behind Paul Verhoeven’s Oscar-nominated “Elle.”

Place Publique” is written by Jaoui (pictured at Cannes this year, where she sat on the festival’s official jury) and her regular co-author Jean-Pierre Bacri, who is also the film’s protagonist. The two have collaborated, both before and behind the camera, on a flurry of movies that have become cult hits, notably “The Taste of Others.”

Bacri stars as Castro, a once-famous TV host who gets together with old friends, including his ex-wife, at a housewarming party on the outskirts of Paris. Over the course of the party, it becomes obvious that success has changed Castro, who used to share the idealistic political views of his former wife

Pretty Packaging: Sculpting Time With The Andrei Tarkovsky Boxset

When we think of pretty packaging of DVD/Blu-ray releases, the usual disc-pimping suspects pop up: Arrow, Cj-Entertainment, Criterion (when so minded), Anime Limited, Eureka, Funimation, Wild Side Video, Sentai Filmworks... Curzon Arificial Eye will generally not be in that shortlist, though that's not a slur on their ability as a distributor. Not unlike the British Film Institute, they have a very impressive catalogue with plenty of certified classics in it, and their releases are often perfectly decent, if not very flashy. That goes for their boxsets too. But even they clearly felt inspired when designing a boxset for Andrei Tarkovsky's films. Called "The Deluxe Collection", the limited (and numbered) set is meant as a companion piece to the "Sculpting Time" retrospective, a touring programme which...

French arthouse Svod Service Nowave Inks Pact with Wide Side (Exclusive)

French arthouse Svod Service Nowave Inks Pact with Wide Side (Exclusive)
Berlin– Nowave, the Svod service specializing in arthouse world cinema, has closed a library deal with French distribution company Wild Side, the Wild Bunch-owned video distribution company.

Nowave was created by Bérangère Dastarac 18 months ago with the idea to showcase non-mainstream auteur films, genre movies and shorts, many of which have played festivals and have not been released in theaters.

“We’re aiming to give more visibility to great films that have gone unnoticed because they got lost in the flood of theatrical releases,” said Dastarac, who added that the service’s model was particularly attractif to right-holders as it offers a 50/50 revenue sharing.

Dastarac, who produced several films including “Winter of Discontent” and “Sing Freedom,” has enlisted several industry players and journalists to curate selection of films by theme in order to maximize content editorialization and attract younger audiences, particularly millennials.

For instance, Nowave just featured a curation focusing on Pinku movies,

Pretty Packaging: Sweet Smell Of Success Smells Sweet By Any Other Name

While not particularly successful at the box office, Patrick Mackendrick's 1957 film Sweet Smell of Success has over the years gained the status of classic, thanks to its searing script and the fantastically slimy performances by its two leads Tony Curtis and Burt Lancaster (check out Dave Canfield's review of the Criterion edition to find out more). And in France, where the film is known as Le Grand Chantage, it has now been given a stellar release by Wild Side Video. Wild Side Video has several different approaches on how to tackle its special editions. Sometimes they create beautiful boxes which add a book or two to their general release, like they did with The Red Turtle and Snowpiercer. But sometimes they release books. Big,...

Review: 'Brooklyn Nine-Nine' - 'The Swedes': You're a friend of mine
A review of tonight's "Brooklyn Nine-Nine" coming up just as soon as you're what sneezes are... After a couple of episodes in a row that seemed to be "Brooklyn" leaning too hard into areas where the series tends to struggle, "The Swedes" was the show back in excellent form — and, interestingly, while operating in places that have also been problems in the past. While the show tends to cast great guest stars, for instance, the regular cast is so big and so good that bringing in outsiders for prominent roles can often through episodes out of balance. But while Riki Lindhome and Anders Holm added some amusing creepiness as the eponymous Swedes, they were there primarily for Jake and Rosa to react to, which still made it a story about our regulars. And Neil deGrasse Tyson's appearance was kept at the appropriate cameo length, with enough time for some

Berlin: Italy’s Indiana and Wildside Form Inside to Lure Foreign Shoots to Italy (Exclusive)

Emerging Italian production players Wildside and Indiana have joined forces to form Inside, a new outfit dedicated to luring foreign productions to Italy where a flurry of international shoots is starting to flock, including MGM’s “Ben Hur” and upcoming James Bond pic “Spectre.”

The new company, a first for Italy, is being conceived as a “one-stop-shop” to provide executive production services and also location scouting, casting, accounting, legal, fund-raising assistance and access to other Italian and European soft money resources, said Indiana’s Benedetto Habib.

Q&A: Wild Bunch’s Vincent Maraval Unveils Pan-European Digital Distribution Company

Paris: Building on its experiment with Abel Ferrara’s “Welcome to New York,” Wild Bunch is launching a pan-European digital distribution company.

Following the footsteps of TWC/Radius, A24 or IFC Films in the U.S., the Paris-based studio will acquire fresh movies for digital distribution in key European markets where it’s already established: In France (with Wild Bunch and Wild Side) Germany (with Wild Bunch Germany and Senator), in Italy (with Bim), in Spain (with Vertigo). In the U.K., Wild Bunch inked a pact with Altitude.

Unveiled less than two months following the roll-out of Netflix across continental Europe, Wild Bunch’s digital company also plans on being involved in financing and co-producing movies with U.S. partners.

Netflix sparked concerns in France last week when it nabbed exclusive rights to “St.Vincent” and “The Disappearance of Eleanor Rigby” with Jessica Chastain for Gaul, therefore bypassing the sacrosanct theatrical release.
