‘Criminal’ director to take on ‘Rambo’ reboot

Criminal director Ariel Vroman is being lined up to head-up a reboot of the Sylvester StalloneRambo’ movies. The Hollywood Reporter broke the news over the weekend that Vroman, who also directed the respectable Michael Shannon-led crime movie The Iceman, will helm Rambo: New Blood for Nu Image/Millennium Films.

Stallone is not involved in the new movie, which will be written by Brooks McLaren and would see a younger actor inhabit the role. The trade says that the makers are looking for a character akin to James Bond.

There have been four ‘Rambo’ movies to date, the first of which was 1982’s First Blood, which followed former Green Beret John Rambo as he is pursued into the mountains surrounding a small town by a tyrannical sheriff and his deputies, forcing him to survive using his combat skills. Three films that followed, the last of which was John Rambo,

The Jungle Book Wins Again at the Box Office with $60.8M
With just a few weeks left until Marvel's Captain America: Civil War kicks off the summer movie season, Disney's The Jungle Book put up big numbers in its debut last week, raking in $103.2 million. This weekend, the Disney adventure only went up against one new movie in wide release, Universal's The Huntsman: Winter's War, while a number of other movies like Pantelion's Compadres, Bleecker Street's Elvis & Nixon and Roadside Attractions' The Hologram For the King also debuted in limited release. None of these movies ended up standing a chance against The Jungle Book at the box office this weekend, which won again with an impressive $60.8 million.

The Jungle Book was being projected to drop a healthy 43% in its second frame in theaters, winning for the second week in a row with $59 million, but it ended up faring a bit better than those predictions. According to Box Office Mojo, The Jungle Book

Can 'Winter's War' Take Down 'Jungle Book' at the Box Office?

Can 'Winter's War' Take Down 'Jungle Book' at the Box Office?
While we still have a few weeks until the summer movie season, 2016 is proving that the right movies can put up big numbers early in the year. Deadpool has shattered records since its debut in February, while Zootopia and Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice have earned big as well. That tradition continued last weekend with The Jungle Book, which nabbed $103.2 million in its debut. This weekend, the Disney adventure goes up against two newcomers, Universal's The Huntsman: Winter's War and Bleecker Street's Elvis & Nixon, neither of which stand a chance against Disney's Jungle Book, according to our estimates from studying Box Office Mojo.

The Jungle Book is being projected to drop a healthy 43% in its second frame in theaters, winning for the second week in a row with $59 million. The Huntsman: Winter's War is expected to debut in second place with $26.3 million, with the top five rounded out by

Mexican Film Industry Reacts to Sean Penn-El Chapo Interview

Mexican Film Industry Reacts to Sean Penn-El Chapo Interview
Did anything happen in Mexico over the last few days except for the recapture of “El Chapo” and Sean Penn’s interview? If so, it was hardly getting much play late Sunday and early Monday from the Spanish-speaking media.

Mexican newspaper El Universal led with a special – “Kate, Sean, El Chapo Links – Documented” plus six Penn-hostile columns; Spain’s El Pais America edition dedicated all its top eight online stories to El Chapo’s detention and interview.

Meanwhile, however, members of Mexico’s film industry, like Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu and Gael Garcia Bernal at the Golden Globes, preferred to take a step back, get their heads round the Chapo-Penn meeting and set it in a broader context.

“The fact that two actors had the chance to meet with El Chapo — the most wanted man in the world — only shows the incapacity of the Mexican government to do what it is supposed to do,

The story of this iconic meeting has finally made it to the big screen in the new movie Elvis & Nixon, with IMDb revealing the first trailer. The trailer debut is especially significant, since today is Elvis Presley's birthday.

The meeting was initiated by Presley, who wrote Nixon a six-page letter requesting a visit and suggesting that he be made a 'Federal Agent-at-Large' in the Bureau of Narcotics and Dangerous Drugs. Watch: Channing Tatum & Bros. Grind Their Bods Again In The First Trailer For ‘Magic Mike Xxl’

The gang is back in “Magic Mike Xxl,” this time in a road trip film. Ok, most of the gang is back. Matthew McConaughey’s Dallas and Alex Pettyfer’s The Kid characters are awol, but returning to the fold are Channing Tatum, Matt Bomer, Joe Manganiello, Kevin Nash, Adam Rodriguez and Gabriel Iglesias. Steven Soderbergh has vacated the director’s chair too, but don’t worry, he’s acted as director of photography, camera man and editor (we heard this one basically locked picture already). Instead, Soderbergh’s right-hand man and longtime producer/first A.D. Greg Jacobs is at the helm (he directed “Criminal” and “Wind Chill”). From all accounts, while still written by Reid Carolin and Tatum, “Magic Mike Xxl” sounds like much more of a good time buddies comedy. This time the strippers take a road trip from Tampa to Myrtle Beach for a stripping convention.

10 Producers to Watch: Campbell-Grobman Films
Friends Lati Grobman and Christa Campbell came together as producing partners in 2011 as Campbell-Grobman Films after working as exec producers to help set up films such as Lionsgate’s “Leatherface 3D” and Kat Coiro’s romantic comedy “A Case of You,” which stars Justin Long, Sienna Miller and Brendan Fraser.

Grobman also was an exec producer on the Michael Shannon-Chris Evans crime drama “The Iceman” and James Cox’s indie dramedy “Straight A’s,” both of which co-star Campbell.

The duo scored with 2013’s “Texas Chainsaw 3D,” which took in $47 million worldwide.

But don’t label them as horror queens.

“We’ve done a lot of different things,” says Campbell, whose acting credits include “Drive Angry,” “The Mechanic” and a fair amount of genre. “We were nominated for an Emmy for (documentary) ‘Brave Miss World,’ ” she adds, and their list also includes exec producing duties on “She’s Funny That Way,

Director Greg Jacobs Talks His Amazon Show ‘Red Oaks,’ The Sequel To ‘Magic Mike,’ ‘The Knick’ & More

While he’s spent more than a decade both producing and working as First Assistant director on the films of Steven Soderbergh, filmmaker Greg Jacobs is much more than just second fiddle. A utility player who wears several hats in the creative process, Jacobs has produced over two dozen films, acted as a second-unit director or assistant director on two dozen more, directed two feature-length films (2004’s “Criminal” and 2007’s “Windchill”), and has one more in the works. It’s a little film called “Magic Mike Xxl” which you may have heard of. But Jacobs is more than a jack-of-all-trades shortstop. He’s a creator, and his latest endeavor is “Red Oaks," a TV series he conceived and co-wrote for Amazon. A coming-of-age comedy set in the "go-go" '80s, “Red Oaks” centers on a college student trying to enjoy a last hurrah before summer comes to an end and his uncertain future begins.

Amazon Releases Preview Clips Of New Pilot Red Oaks

Amazon Studios have always done things a little differently. Firstly, their door is always open to creators wishing to submit material. Secondly, when they produce that material, it’s for the audience to decide if it is of sufficient quality to warrant further investment. They make a pilot available, people watch it, and its fate is determined by user comments and ratings. Among the latest of these offerings is Red Oaks – a comedy written by Joe Gangemi (Wind Chill) and Gregory Jacobs (Criminal), directed by David Gordon Green (Prince Avalanche) and executive produced by Steven Soderbergh. To say it is worth checking out is an understatement.

Starring Craig Roberts (22 Jump Street), Paul Reiser (Mad About You), Richard Kind (Obvious Child) and Jennifer Grey (The Bling Ring), the show is set in the 1980s, and sees a college student take a summer job as an assistant tennis pro at a country club.

Criminal Adds Alice Eve To Its Cast

Ariel Vromen’s next film – Criminal – is shaping up to be proof positive of the filmmaker’s ability to attract fascinating casting combinations. Where his previous movie – 2012’s The Iceman – featured Michael Shannon, Chris Evans, James Franco, Winona Ryder, Ray Liotta and David Schwimmer, his forthcoming venture is bringing in names even more legendary in nature.

The plot centres around a dangerous criminal, who is tasked by the CIA to complete a dead agent’s mission after they implant that agent’s memories and experiences into his brain. Kevin Costner will feature in the leading role, with Ryan Reynolds, Tommy Lee Jones and Gary Oldman also signing up. By anyone’s standards, that’s quite a lot of testosterone, so we now have the announcement that Alice Eve will also co-star.

Having built a solid foundation for herself in recent years, with supporting roles in films such as The Raven,
