German silent crime piece.

This mix of Cologne location shooting and Berlin studio is the work of now forgotten Viennese director Randolf, who made one of the first versions of the MAYERLNG story.

Assured and a departure from the more familiar German silents, this one raises hopes of something along the lines of a Mabuse film or SPIONE. Unfortunately all we get is a rather slackly paced serve of familiar situations.

Detective Stuart, master of disguises, foils the plot of the gang of murderous would-be jewel thieves, kidnappers and insurance fraudsters headed by De Vogt, who begs on the Cathedral square.

Part of a current surge in early film restoration, BEGGAR arrives in a quite presentable copy, missing one of it's reels and the original tinting.
