The classic sitcom series "M*A*S*H" was incredibly ahead of its time, managing to get quite a bit of mature material past network censors. Sometimes that material had to deal with the anti-war nature of the series and the difficult conditions the characters found themselves in, and sometimes that material was just bawdy. Seriously, there are a lot of sex jokes in "M*A*S*H" and quite a few people are knocking combat boots, but originally there was going to be even more sex, and more adultery. There's already an awful lot of adultery on "M*A*S*H," with several major characters cheating on their spouses, but the original plan would have taken that up several notches.
The adultery in "M*A*S*H" has a complicated legacy — the early seasons are a bit more laid-back with the characters' morals and there's quite a bit of marital infidelity, while...

During his lifetime, Rock Hudson was a model for American masculinity. That changed after his death, when the strapping, straight-acting (but occasionally sensitive) hunk from Winnetka became the poster boy for Hollywood homophobia: a closeted star who’d been forced to play a role his entire career that wasn’t true to himself, on screen and off. “Rock Hudson: All That Heaven Allowed” treats that compromise as a tragedy, leaning on the fact Hudson died of AIDS to underscore the injustice, but Stephen Kijak’s documentary does him a disservice, reducing Hudson’s career — in exactly the way he went so far out of his way to avoid — to the dimension of his sexuality.
Built around interviews with a handful of former lovers and friends, Kijak spills private details from Hudson’s personal life, ranging from whom he shagged to how he arranged such trysts in the first place. A...

Kino Lorber has released a Blu-ray edition of the 1965 comedy Strange Bedfellows, which existed primarily to reunite Rock Hudson and Gina Lollobrigida, who had a box-office hit with Come September several years before. Like most of the romantic comedies of the era, there is little to separate this from a standard sitcom episode aside from the running time. Hudson plays a London-based executive on the rise who spontaneously marries a tempestuous Italian bombshell artist played by Lollobrigida. The newlyweds find their mutually insatiable sex drives are the only thing they have in common. Politically conservative Hudson is constantly at odds with his wife's liberal activism. They soon separate but after seven years, Hudson has a reason to stall the divorce proceedings he has put in place. Seems his even more conservative boss wants to promote him to be his right hand man- on the proviso that he is happily married.

Nothing is ever simple in Riverdale. Even a prison breakout was related to a sinister motive by Hiram Lodge.
Now, there's a hostage plot on Riverdale Season 5 Episode 11 to expose the truth of why the explosion happened in the first place.
Hiram has his hands in everything. If only there were someone who could stop him once and for all.
The hunt for the prison escapees and Veronica's stolen opal were two plots that converged through a common enemy. It's the type of coincidence that comes with a Riverdale-style nudge and wink. (All that was missing were milkshakes and diner neon.)
Archie and his group of vigilantes didn't have a strong enough plot until Veronica and Reggie joined the mix.
The prison breakout during Riverdale Season 5 Episode 10 was the height of this escapee plot; the following drama was simply the after-effects. Rounding up the convicts alone would've added a few scenes,...

(L-r) Daniel Lapaine, Jacqueline McKenzie, Nathan Page and director Tony Tilse on set in Victoria.
The relationship between Essie Davis’ Phryne Fisher and Nathan Page’s Jack Robinson breaks new ground in Miss Fisher and the Crypt of Tears.
That’s according to Tony Tilse, who directed Every Cloud Productions’ murder-mystery/adventure/romance, which premieres in Australian cinemas on February 27.
“The lovely tension between Phryne and Jack is always there but the two of them on screen together is just magic in a way we haven’t seen before,” Tilse tells If.
“Nathan is fantastic, absolutely up there with Essie’s performance level. It’s beautiful to watch.”
Tilse, who was the set-up director of Ms Fisher’s Murder Mysteries, was the natural choice by producer Fiona Eagger and scriptwriter/executive producer Deb Cox
to helm the feature.

Iconic Australian actor, Paul Hogan is to star in upcoming feature film “The Very Excellent Mr Dundee.” Production starts next month in Australia, Los Angeles and Vancouver.
Hogan recently thrilled and infuriated fans of the “Crocodile Dundee” film series in which he starred in the 1980s, by appearing in a short film that appeared to be a trailer for a new film in the franchise. But the clip turned out to be a advertisement for Tourism Australia.
“The Very Excellent Mr Dundee” sees Hogan playing himself and on the brink of receiving a Knighthood for services to comedy. “Don’t do anything to mess this up,” his manager tells him. However, despite all his best efforts, the next six weeks sees his name and reputation destroyed.
It is to be directed by Dean Murphy who is producing alongside Nigel Odel. International sales are to be handled by Los Angeles-based Kmi.

[Editor’s Note: The following contains spoilers for “Outlander” Season 3 Episode 4, “Of Lost Things.”]
Unrequited Love
With Frank gone and Brianna embracing the truth about her real father, the hunt for Jamie was on in full force in 1968 Scotland. With a little help from Roger, they tracked Jamie all the way to Ardsmuir, where they promptly lost him. Meanwhile, in 1756 England the story picked up with the Helwater clan welcoming Jamie into their folds as a stablehand, with some receptions a little warmer than others. Indeed, one such reception completely altered Jamie’s life yet again with even more heartache.
Despite the different eras, at this point in the narrative it’s clear that both Jamie and Claire still hold that torch for each other, but that they’re also feeling the impossibility and weight of their separation. As far as Claire knows Jamie may as well be dead, whereas Jamie rarely speaks of his former wife because there’s no point in driving himself mad.

You couldn’t ask for a harder reset than the one “Preacher” unleashed at the end of last year’s first season. Even though much of the show’s first ten episodes had the familiar beats of a trial-by-fire origin story, it was a methane-induced farewell blow that effectively cleared the board of all but a handful of main characters.
And it left “Preacher” in a precarious situation, one where its title character has the most powerful weapon in any plane of existence and is leading an unlikely gang of folks on a road trip/deity hunt. Jesse, Tulip and Cassidy, a motley crew of ex-lovers and ex-humans, escaped that fateful blast with a common goal: find God, who went missing some time before Jesse came into control of Genesis, the cosmic power that can compel people in his path to obey his will. Because when they find God, they have some questions for him.

Armed with a greater knowledge of the tool that Jesse has at his disposal, the outset of Season 2 finds “Preacher” at an even more solipsistic level. And it’s working to the show’s advantage. More than ever, Jesse and the power inside of him become the specific mechanisms powering the story forward. But with every passing interaction, Jesse’s web of influence is regrowing, catching in more side characters after so many were wiped away by last season’s explosion. There’s a rich world lying right outside the boundaries of what this preacher is concerned with, and the show has taken full advantage of its quick breather before the rest of the calvary catches up.
Catch up it certainly does, showcasing an even more solid handle on the whirlwind action that “Preacher” already did fairly well. Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg waste little time recapturing that thrill of the chase far outside the former Annville city lines, this time with a grindhouse-tinged highway shootout in the first episode that plunges viewers into Jesse, Tulip and Cassidy’s strange new world.
Violence in the world of “Preacher,” especially when an all-powerful force like Genesis is involved, has become a means of expression, not merely a means to an end. As last season’s finale filled in some major gaps in Jesse and Tulip’s past, the new ways in which they respond to outside threats help to show who and what they value most. For good measure, there’s even a sly “good guy with a gun” commentary slipped into one of these early-episode standoffs. (One particular Michael Slovis-directed fight sequence also shows that the series has some new tricks up its sleeve as well.)
Thankfully, this action evolution hasn’t come at the expense of the irreverent banter that carried Garth Ennis’ warped vision from the comics into the TV realm. There’s an endearing nature to the way that the show uses some well-timed whimsy to cut through the overbearing implications of an all-consuming, heaven-hell throwdown. One standout winking quip that sounds like a secondary series mission statement: “The Internet is a soul-killer. Stay clear of it if you can.”
Yes, the Saint of Killers, a terrifying and timeless cowboy assassin with a Groot-esque vocabulary, is lurking right behind every one of this trio’s pit stops, even when Jesse and Tulip and Cassidy pause to enjoy the pleasure of each other’s company. But with every confrontation that this ragtag gang can escape from with everyone still alive, the show keeps a steady rotation of vices to help ease the journey on their way to finding God.
It’s a fitting addition, given that “Preacher” has left much of its grimy palette behind, trading it in for one that still acknowledges the show’s nihilist streak but leaves room for plenty of color. Those neon lights and bright casino interiors make for an indicative shift as its central cast of characters try on some tiny, added doses of hedonism and — dare we say it — happiness.
Dominic Cooper is as dutiful as ever as Jesse, handling the soft-spoken charge of a man of God with a quiet stubbornness. Though “Preacher” has yet to fully unleash Tulip’s potential, Ruth Negga continues to be a highlight, whether or not bullets are flying. Tulip hasn’t fully escaped the consequences of last season’s late revelations, but whenever the show slightly veers from Jesse’s quest, any added layers to Tulip’s character are a welcome chance for Negga to show why she’s one of TV’s most versatile actresses.

And even as vampire Cassidy is put through physical torment, it’s hard to imagine an actor having more fun in a role on TV right now than Joseph Gilgun. After the persistent “Lebowski” criticism from last season, Gilgun continues to dig into Cassidy’s perplexed reactions to human nature with delightful results.
With Jesse still taking much of the main focus, this newest season of “Preacher” benefits from his sense of singular purpose. Having an overarching goal and a shortened list of distractions has left the humans and immortal beings in his inner circle with the perfect antidote to a world where God is missing and an honest mistake can trap a teenager in Hell. There are plenty of miles on the odometer still left to travel, but few shows have done a better job tidying up the roadmap.

Where’s your freaking God now? No, really. We want to know.
When AMC’s supernatural adventure series “Preacher” returns in June, the hunt will be on for God, and we don’t mean in the spiritual sense. The second season has been expanded from Season 1’s 10 episodes to 13.

Beauty and the beast.
That’s the scene inside one of the Vancouver area’s myriad empty warehouse spaces, as The Flash‘s Killer Frost takes a clandestine meeting with Savitar. As the tense confab draws to a close, the hulking speed god leans in toward his new ally to make clear her mission in three growled words — one of which is kill.
With stakes so dire, will Barry, Cisco and kindly Caitlin Snow’s other Team Flash mates be willing to do what it takes to ice her evil alter ego? In the name of eliminating any obstacles to stopping Iris’ imminent death?...

Part of the charm of Hakeem Lyon is how ridiculously immature he is.
If I knew him in real life, I would find him insufferable, but as a character on a soapy primetime drama, he's incredibly amusing – a blinged-out cartoon character.
Even becoming a father didn't seem to change Hakeem's ways all that much. He might be trying to take care of Bella and make his relationship with Tiana official, but he's still throwing wild parties with his entourage and begging his father for expensive birthday gifts.
That's right, Empire Season 3 Episode 12 was Hakeem's birthday. And not just any birthday: the big 21. Hakeem is now legal, though that doesn't mean he's necessarily abiding by the law.
At first, "Strange Bedfellows" seemed to set up to be an hour of Peak Hakeem – which in my mind is absolutely ideal. But then it took an unexpected turn, in that there was character development!

DC. Marvel. Industry giants, yet not the only names in comics. Not by a long shot.
Valiant is one such company that has been around for quite a while, founded in 1989 by former Marvel Comics editor-in-chief Jim Shooter and Steven Massarsky. Like the two industry leaders, we have the Valiant Universe including such titles as X-o Manowar, Harbinger, and Shadowman. Valiant already has a five-picture deal with Sony to bring the Valiant Universe to life, including movie versions of Bloodshot and Harbinger, leading to an Avengers style event in Harbinger Wars.
Heat Vision has learned that now that Valiant is developing Archer & Armstrong in house before being shopped around to studios. The project certainly won't be a hard sell, considering the talent that just joined the film.

The “Breaking Bad” fandom truly knows no bounds, as proven by this two hour supercut which uses key scenes to whittle down the six season series into a feature film.
The movie opens compellingly enough, jumping between a late scene of Walter White (Bryan Cranston) surveying the damage done to his family home and a flashback of Walter and his wife, Skylar (Anna Gunn), buying the house as newlyweds.

The anonymous editors spent two years culling footage and cutting it into a two hour narrative, “A study project that became an all-consuming passion,” the creators write. “It’s not a fan-film, hitting the highlights of show in a home-made homage, but rather a re-imagining of the underlying concept itself, lending itself to full feature-length treatment. An alternative ‘Breaking Bad,’ to be viewed with fresh eyes.”

This year’s SXSW Film Festival is currently raging in Austin, Texas, complete with a packed slate that should keep festival attendees pretty happy in between bouts of chowing down breakfast tacos and basking in the good ol’ Texas sunshine. As ever, the festival features a strong lineup of both fresh premieres and festival favorites, new and returning stars, and plenty of opportunities for talent to break out on the festival stage.
From filmmakers to actors (and, sometimes, both at the same time), familiar faces looking to try a new craft to total newbies, this year’s festival has plenty of stars on the rise to look out for (ouch, so bright).

Ah, the Third Doctor series, one of a handful of books I really look forward to each issue. This has been a blast, a near perfect blend of nostalgia and skillful writing, of a nod to the past and a wink to the future. It is helping to fill in gaps we never knew were there to begin with. Jon Pertwee’s Doctor lacks the humour and wackiness of many of his future regenerations, but makes up for it with his flair and sheer individuality. And his Venusian karate of course, let’s not forget that.
Last issue saw Salamander, the doppelganger and sometime impersonator of The Second Doctor, drop the pretence of the alien invasion and reveal his true plan. He has been biding his time, stealing and replicating Time Lord technology on Earth, all the while studying The Doctor from afar.

A tip of the hat to my friend Michael Sacco-Gibson this week for the topic.
It seems we’ve finally labeled the übernerds who choose to make it their lot in life to ostracize and criticize fans who enter our pulpy realm by ways and means different from their own. Gatekeeping against those fans who found a love of comic books (the books themselves, the characters therein, or any comic-related endeavor I assume) by way of TV, movies, or perhaps cosplay.
As Michael would explain to me (and no, not mansplain), Gatekeepers are often men, who often pick on not men over their comic book bonafides. Seems without an encyclopedic knowledge of issues, storylines, writers, artists, and editing mandates at the ready, a gatekeeper will scoff — and in some reported cases deny purchase of wares based on this inability. This also extends to those fans of properties who dare say they love the character…...

See related Little Me: My Life From A-z by Matt Lucas review
Overlapping with both Star Trek: The Next Generation and Star Trek: Voyager, Star Trek: Deep Space Nine's seven seasons had some very high points, It also had some very low ones that strayed a bit too far from the core of Star Trek for some fans, yet gave the show a unique texture that some savour.
If you only ever watch 25 stories from Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, these are they, at least in my opinion – the only rule being that multi-part episodes count as one story (but great big multi-season Dominion flavoured arcs don't!)
With the 50th anniversary of Star Trek as a whole this year,...

Six years after he had some pretty profane words for Southwest Airlines, director Kevin Smith returned to "enemy territory" for a flight ... and it surprisingly went pretty well. The Clerks and Red State filmmaker, 45, took to Twitter on Friday to recount a new story of travel woes, in which - this time - Southwest came to the rescue. Though the airline earned Smith's ire in 2010 when it allegedly booted him from a flight due to his weight, he tweeted Friday that he was "ready to give [Southwest] another try." A lot happened on Thursday’s Scandal, and we’re going to discuss everything in depth, but first thing’s first: Jake Ballard is a garbage person.

The world of Scandal has always been a veritable treasure trove of monsters — unlikable, selfish characters who abuse their power with reckless abandon — but Jake, particularly in recent weeks, has evolved into a very special type of bastard.
What kind of guy breaks into his ex-girlfriend’s apartment and enters her bedroom in the middle of the night?...

Warning: The following contains spoilers from Tuesday’s iZombie Season 2 premiere.
No wonder iZombie executive producer Rob Thomas has been keeping mum about Major’s arc in Season 2!
At the close of the CW series’ sophomore opener on Tuesday night, Liv’s ex-fiancé was blackmailed by Max Rager into agreeing to kill off all of Seattle’s zombies.
