It’s always fun to discuss horror novels that Aren’T Stephen King. No knock on the monster from Maine, he’s the master of horror novels over the last, oh I don’t know, 50 years, for a reason but its nice to not have the show be solely dedicated to his adapted works. He says knowing that he makes the schedule and decides what books to cover. See you in May, Mr. King! Funnily enough, the man actually loved today’s subject to the degree that he called it one of 2006’s best horror novels, but more on that in a little bit. The Ruins (watch it Here) was one of those hot properties by an author whose previous work was an instant success with critics, fans, and studio executives that put it to celluloid. The book came out and just two years later we were given a movie...

As I get older, I find it harder and harder to find horror movies from the 80s and even 90s to qualify for a recommendation towards a best horror movie you never saw. First is the influx of all these great companies like Vinegar Syndrome, Arrow, and Severin Films, not to mention Kino and Scream Factory, who pull out all the stops finding the most hidden of hidden gems to clean up and release. Second, we have a ludicrous amount of streaming services, and the free ones typically can find these smaller movies that cost way less to license a streamable version. Between my generation recommending everything under the sun to their coworkers, friends, and family as well as newer generations being willing to stream something if its easy to find, the 80s is well represented, for better and for worse. The 2000s are Chock Full of movies that came...

On Jan. 19, 2001, Stacy Peralta’s skateboarding documentary Dogtown and Z-Boys lit up the Sundance Film Festival, going on to earn multiple honors in Park City and, later, a feature film treatment, Lords of Dogtown. The Hollywood Reporter’s original review is below:
Where the debris meets the sea, that’s the tight scope on Dogtown and Z-Boys. It’s a wild ride with eight boarders from Venice Beach, Calif., that was a deserved co-winner of the Audience Award for documentaries at the Sundance Film Festival. Director Stacy Peralta also deservedly garnered the director honor in the documentary category.
Carved through the waves and asphalt of Venice, Dogtown follows the daring exploits of a tight-‘n’-tough band of wayward teens, outsiders who assaulted the softblue world of ’70s surfing. Hardened from single-parent homes and charged with pent-up energies, they took to the waves with a take-no-prisoners style.

"I think 'Twilight' could be huge." Those were the words that were once said to be uttered by Paramount's former co-president of production Karen Rosenfelt, who helped turn the YA novel into a movie. While the movie ultimately wouldn't be made at Paramount, it turns out she was more right than anyone could have possibly predicted. In the end, Paramount's loss would turn into Summit Entertainment's ridiculous gain as the movie based on Stephenie Meyer's best-selling book would kick off not just a billion-dollar franchise, but an entire blockbuster YA craze.
It's easy to take for granted now, but the saga of Bella and Edward — which is now ingrained in popular culture — did not reek of success at the outset.

After debuting in The Dangerous Lives of Altar Boys (2002), American actor Emile Hirsch found himself cast as the lead in numerous Hollywood productions throughout the following decade. He garnered widespread acclaim from critics and audiences alike thanks to his work in Sean Penn's magnum opus Into the Wild (2007). Those two became frequent collaborators in the following year, both appearing in Milk (2008) by Gus Van Sant.
Those are the two most acclaimed films of Hirsch's career. But less hardcore audiences may associate Hirsch with films such as The Girl Next Door (2004), Lords of Dogtown (2005), and Alpha Dog (2006). Released in consecutive years, all three films featured Hirsch in the lead role, and they really ran the gamut of genre. Girl Next Door is a romantic comedy, while Alpha Dog goes down as a crime drama. They both hold up wonderfully today. But throughout those well-known releases, Hirsch has appeared in...

Documentary films and docu-series have gained mainstream popularity in recent decades, inspiring feature films and TV shows to adapt their narratives. HBO has spearheaded the trend of adapting documentaries, producing TV movies and series that draw from true stories captured in non-fiction films. Adaptations such as The Walk and Lords of Dogtown have replicated the style and themes of their documentary predecessors while adding their own cinematic flair.

Ah, The Twilight Saga. What a moment in time. From the release of the first installment in 2008 to the conclusion in 2012, it was an era in which online randos believed the epitome of comedy was responding to the announcement of a new piece of vampire media with, "So long as the vampires don't sparkle, I'm in!" All the while, the movie adaptations of Stephenie Meyer's uber-popular supernatural teen romance novels continued to rake in enough money to fill several dump trucks with each passing year, no matter how much their detractors roared their terrible roars and gnashed their terrible teeth and rolled their terrible eyes and showed their terrible claws.

The life of a movie director isn't all glamour and red carpets. Getting movies made, particularly personal stories or passion projects, can be exceedingly difficult. Then if the movie fails to turn a profit, the director will be left more precarious and with fewer doors open than before. Oftentimes, directors will make compromises to get their movies realized — particularly financial compromises. Catherine Hardwicke, in a recent interview with Yahoo News, detailed her struggles to make her debut "Thirteen."
The film is about two (you guessed it) 13-year-old delinquents, Tracy (Evan Rachel Wood) and Evie (Nikki Reed). According to Hardwicke, the characters' ages and the sensual subject matter meant no studio would touch it: "Every financier said, 'No, we can't make it. How could we make a movie that's gonna be R-rated with an unknown 13-year-old girl in the lead?'"
"Thirteen" was ultimately shot for $2 million (raised by Hardwicke herself with independent equity) over 24 days.

One father only has a short amount of time to fix a life full of mistakes in Prisoner's Daughter. The moving drama centers on Max, a former boxer with a dark past as a mob enforcer who has been in prison for over a decade, but is given a compassionate release when he's diagnosed with terminal cancer. The one condition he's given is he has to live with his estranged daughter and grandson, forcing them to confront the sins of his past.
Brian Cox leads the ensemble cast for Prisoner's Daughter alongside Kate Beckinsale as Max's daughter Maxine, Christopher Convery, Jon Huertas, Ernie Hudson, and Tyson Ritter. Carried by powerful performances from its leads and warm direction from Lords of Dogtown and Twilight's Catherine Hardwicke, the movie is an emotional and charming exploration of guilt, remorse, and repairing family dynamics.

Prisoner's Daughter is an emotional character study and family drama that follows a prisoner on compassionate release as he struggles to reunite with his estranged daughter and grandson despite his illness. It's a quietly contemplative study of violence with a star-studded team — Brian Cox plays Max, the formerly violent muscle for the mob, and Kate Beckinsale plays his daughter Maxine, a working-class woman struggling to care for her son, Ezra (Christopher Convery).
Joining Cox and Beckinsale is Tyson Ritter (singer of the band All-American Rejects) as Maxine's ex-husband and Ezra's father, Tyler. He's a man who is probably (and tragically) similar to her father when he was younger — selfish, violent, and not a great father. Meanwhile, Ezra is being violently bullied and has to decide if he should be violent in return, and Max has to decide if he should return to violence in order to stop Tyler from wreaking havoc on Maxine's life.

Her career hobbled by uninspired material since the commercial bonanza of “Twilight’s” first screen installment 15 years ago, Catherine Hardwicke at first appears to be back on firmer terra with “Prisoner’s Daughter.” Its mix of adult dysfunction and coming-of-age pains against a downscale milieu (here working-class Las Vegas) recalls the director’s strong initial features, “Thirteen” and “Lords of Dogtown.”
But this drama, with Brian Cox as a terminally ill ex-con reunited with daughter Kate Beckinsale and her son, soon reveals itself as a formulaic contrivance heading towards predictable strife and tearjerking. Competently handled and well-cast, it’s nonetheless held back from generating much authentic emotion by the too-familiar beats of Mark Bacci’s script. Vertical is opening the feature, which premiered at TIFF last fall, on limited U.S. theatrical screens this Friday. It’ll doubtless do better in release to home formats, those dates as yet Tba.

Ahead of the possible WGA strike, Lionsgate Television has announced their latest legacy revival project is coming in the form of a series adaptation of Stephenie Meyer's vampire love story, "Twilight." The late 2000s and early 2010s have apparently never been hotter, as "Twilight" joins the reboot ranks of the previously announced "Harry Potter" series adaptation, the new "The Lord of the Rings" films, and the soon-to-be-released "The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes" prequel film. It admittedly feels a little unfair to lump in "The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes" with the other reboots, as "The Hunger Games" series has seen a resurgence in popularity and the film is adapting a new book, rather than rehashing what already exists.
As of publication, the "Twilight" series is without a writer or streaming home, but it'd be shocking if IP-hungry suits weren't currently trying to sink their fangs into the property.

Plot: Follows an insecure American woman who unexpectedly inherits her grandfather’s mafia empire in Italy. Guided by the firm’s trusted consigliere, she hilariously defies everyone’s expectations, including her own, as the new head of the family business.
Review: The glut of movies out there means that viewers must be selective with what they watch, often relying on star power to draw them into a project. On the heels of her lead role in the Prime Video series The Power, Toni Collette lets loose and has some fun in Mafia Mamma. From director Catherine Hardwicke, Mafia Mamma is a comedy that would have been an abysmal failure with a weaker lead actress. Despite the copious references to The Godfather and surprising bloodshed, Mafia Mamma never rises above the cliche screenplay. The only saving grace is Collette, who has great comedic timing and dives into this film with energy...

“You’ve never seen Catherine Hardwicke like this before” might as well be emblazoned on any and all marketing materials for the director’s diverse projects. From “Thirteen” to “Twilight,” “Red Riding Hood” to “The Nativity Story,” Hardwicke is constantly shifting gears, changing tones, mixing it up.
Since the breakout success of both Sundance award-winner “Thirteen” and the first “Twilight” film (a massive smash by any metric), Hardwicke has continued to evolve, even in an industry not always welcoming to women with big dreams. As she readies to debut her latest, the Toni Collette-starring fish-out-of-water comedy “Mafia Mamma,” Hardwicke is still pushing forward, even when it’s not easy. That’s just who she is.
“We still need that light to get shined a little brighter and put a little bit more attention on women’s films,” Hardwicke said during a recent Zoom interview with IndieWire. “We’re still fighting.

"Crash" winning Best Picture over "Brokeback Mountain" is easily one of the biggest upsets in modern Oscar history. The Academy's decision was already highly contentious and has only aged like sour milk in the decades since. Ang Lee's tragic romance, on the other hand, remains a touchstone for positive queer representation in mainstream cinema. To dismiss it as the embodiment of the "Bury Your Gays" trope is to approach the film in a vacuum. At a time when homophobic humor intended to assuage the insecurities of straight audiences was commonplace in Hollywood, Lee and his "Brokeback" actors dared to take the story of two men falling in love seriously.
According to Deadline, the tale of cowboys Ennis Del Mar and Jack Twist is getting a new lease on life thanks to a London stage production based on Annie Proulx's original 1997 short story (not Lee's movie). Mike Faist and...

Toni Collette finds herself thrust into the thick of a mob war in the new trailer for Mafia Mamma, set to hit theaters on April 14.

With “Cocaine Bear” notching another win in Universal’s recent run of “silly cinema” hits alongside “Violent Night” and “M3gan,” Bleecker Street is offering up its own escapist high concept pitch. “Mafia Mamma” stars Toni Collette as an American who inherits her grandfather’s business in Italy only to discover that the family business is the mafia.
With help from the firm’s consigliere (Monica Bellucci), she is placed in the position of having to acclimate to her new role as the head of a crime family while avoiding war with a rival family. This trailer — which you can see below — focuses on its protagonist and fish-out-of-water scenario, including Collette admitting she’s never seen “The Godfather” and giving momentary thought to using her newfound crime powers to whack her cheating husband.

The late great Heath Ledger is mostly remembered for his versatility onscreen. Never daring to shy away from a challenge, he jumped from genre to genre. Whether drama, fantasy, romantic comedy, he was always up for an adventure and, as a casual observer of his work, Ledger was one of those talents that seamlessly slipped into whatever role he took on. From "Brokeback Mountain," where he played the leading love interest to Jake Gyllenhaal's character, to playing a California surfer-type in "Lords of Dogtown," and most notably portraying one of the best Jokers in cinema history in Christopher Nolan's "The Dark Knight," he truly could do it all.
However, at the very beginning of his career when he was cast in the teen comedy, "10 Things I Hate About You," the future could have gone completely differently for Ledger. Cast as the contrarian rebellious bad boy Patrick Verona,...

Two iconic H.P. Lovecraft tales are getting the small-screen treatment with Guillermo del Toro's Cabinet of Curiosities. The Netflix horror anthology features adaptations of both "Pickman's Model" from The Vigil director Keith Thomas and "Dreams in the Witch House" from Lords of Dogtown's Catherine Hardwicke.
"Pickman's Model" revolves around Will Thurber, an art student with a talented eye for others' works who becomes enthralled by the grotesque paintings of his peer, Richard Pickman. However, as years progress and the two drift apart, Thurber begins to learn of a dark secret behind his old friend's art that could destroy his life. As with any good Lovecraft tale, the episode of Guillermo del Toro's Cabinet of Curiosities skillfully mixes a gripping psychological thriller with the terrifying nature of the unknown.

Spooky Season is in session on Hulu, as the streaming service is adding a ton of horror-themed content this month. But not to worry, there’s plenty of other non-spooky new movies and shows to watch, too.
In the horror realm, director David Bruckner’s new (and well-received) take on “Hellraiser” arrives on Oct. 7, while horror films ranging from “Annabelle: Creation” to “The ABCs of Death” to “Monster House” to “The Exorcism of Emily Rose” arrive throughout the month.
In decidedly non-scary new arrivals, the entire series of “Schitt’s Creek” comes to Hulu on Oct. 3 after streaming on Netflix for the last few years, while the Hulu original film “Rosaline” – which tells the “Romeo and Juliet” story from a different point of view – streams on Oct. 14.
Other noteworthy library titles include Wes Anderson’s “The French Dispatch” on Oct. 25 and David Cronenberg’s “Crimes of the Future” on Oct. 31.

When the name of your streaming service so neatly fits into the word “Halloween,” you have a moral imperative to bring the goods come spooky season. Thankfully Hulu is abiding by that obligation with its list of new releases for October 2022.
Halloween…or rather Huluween is set to be a big deal for the streamer. This month sees a bevy of horror offerings. On the TV side of things, the series adaptation of Clive Barker’s Hellraiser premieres on Oct. 7. That will be accompanied by two animated specials from Solar Opposites co-creator Justin Roiland. The first is A Sinister Halloween Scary Opposites Solar Special on Oct. 3, which is followed by The Paloni Show! Halloween Special! on Oct. 17.
Hulu’s original movies are decidedly spooky-centric this month as well. The horror meme movie Grimcutty premieres on Oct. 10 and will be followed by Matriarch on Oct. 21. Of course, many of the library...
