Dave Chappelle Settles ViacomCBS Fight as ‘Chappelle’s Show’ Returns to Netflix: ‘They Paid Me Millions’
In a 10-minute stand-up set posted to Instagram titled “Redemption Song” (watch the video in the embed below), comedian Dave Chappelle confirmed “Chappelle’s Show” is returning to stream on Netflix as of Friday, February 12. The comedian has settled his fight with Comedy Central parent comedy ViacomCBS over a streaming license for the iconic sketch comedy series, which ran for three seasons on Comedy Central between 2003 and 2006. Chappelle pulled his show off Netflix in November and released a statement slamming ViacomCBS for licensing “Chappelle’s Show” to Netflix without paying him.

“People think I made a lot of money from ‘Chappelle’s Show,’” Chappelle said at the time. “When I left that show I never got paid. [ViacomCBS] didn’t have to pay me because I signed the contract. But is that right? I found out that these people were streaming my work and they never had to ask me or they never have to tell me.

‘Chappelle’s Show’ Returns To Netflix After Dave Chappelle Makes Peace With Comedy Central: “I Got My Show Back”
Chappelle’s Show, Dave Chappelle’s breakthrough Comedy Central sketch series that was pulled from Netflix’s line-up last November at the comedian’s request, is returning to the streamer today. Chappelle made the announcement at the end of a live performance posted on Instagram overnight.

Last fall, Chappelle had asked Netflix, his new home for standup comedy specials, to remove Chappelle’s Show from its lineup due to a longstanding contract dispute with Comedy Central owner ViacomCBS over licensing and royalty issues.

Watch the new Instagram post below.

In the new Instagram post, Chappelle says the issues have been resolved. “I never asked Comedy Central for anything,” Chappelle tells his audience. “If you remember, I said, ‘I’m going to my real boss,’ and I came to you because I know where my power lies. I asked you to stop watching the show, and thank God almighty for you,

Chappelle revealed the news himself in a video posted to Instagram early Friday titled, “Redemption Song,” in which Chappelle said that he and ViacomCBS, the parent company of Comedy Central, have resolved their licensing issues over “Chappelle’s Show,” with him receiving the license back and “millions of dollars.”

“I told people what my beef was with Comedy Central,” Chappelle says in the 10-minute video, in which he’s performing on stage in front of a small group of people. “I never talked about it. I demanded that the network paid me. Many of my peers laughed at me, because that’s a ridiculous thing to demand. They said, ‘Well you signed the contract, so what are you even mad about?’ Here’s the thing,

HBO Max to Take Down ‘Chappelle’s Show’ After 2020 at Comedian’s Request

HBO Max to Take Down ‘Chappelle’s Show’ After 2020 at Comedian’s Request
HBO Max will follow Netflix’s lead in taking down “Chappelle’s Show” at the request of Chappelle himself.

“We had a conversation with Dave. I won’t get into it, but it’s very clear that it’s a very unique and specific and emotional issue he’s got,” Casey Bloys, chief content officer for HBO and HBO Max, said Tuesday during a Variety event. “So at the end of the year, at the end of this year, December 31st, we’re going to honor his request and take the show down.”

HBO Max’s decision follows a similar move made by Netflix last month, which took down the Comedy Central series after less than a month.

Chappelle has complained multiple times, and at times pointed the finger partially at himself, for the licensing deal with ViacomCBS for his popular, but short-lived series, which ran for two seasons between 2003-

One such place is WarnerMedia’s HBO Max, which Chappelle called out alongside Netflix in a recent performance he posted to social media earlier this week.

Chappelle revealed that he pitched the concept for “Chappelle’s Show” to HBO before it landed at Comedy Central in the early 2000’s. The comedian claimed that the premium cabler’s execs “kicked me out of the office,” and asked him “what do we need you for?”

“These are executives, all they have to do is say, ‘Yeah we’ll take it,’ or, ‘No thank you we won’t.’ But they didn’t say either of those things, they went too far. They said literally what do we need you for,” Chappelle said. “And here they are all
