Hunting for the Hag begins with Tara sitting across the table from a rather sceptical lawyer who keeps telling her the footage on her laptop won’t help her out of the mess she’s in. She reminds him that he was the one who contacted her, and if he doesn’t actually watch the footage, or she’s leaving.
The footage also begins with Tara, noticeably lacking the facial scar she had in the opening scenes, introducing herself as we find out that she, along with her friends Beth and Candy are setting out to get footage of the entity known as The Hawthorne Hag (Nathan Brandon Gaik; Dead Bodies Everywhere).
You might be thinking that it sounds like, director Paul A. Brooks and co-writer...

New month, new recommendations from Deep Cuts Rising. This installment features random picks as well as selections reflecting the month of March 2024.
Regardless of how they came to be here, or what they’re about, these past movies can generally be considered overlooked, forgotten or unknown.
This month’s horror offerings include a killer robot, a haunted mini-mart and more.
The Telephone Box (1972)
Pictured: José Luis López Vázquez’s character talks to a boy inside the namesake of The Telephone Box.
Directed by Antonio Mercero.
An obvious rec for International Find a Pay Phone Booth Day (March 10) is La Cabina (a.k.a. The Telephone Box). This Spanish, made-for-tv short-film turns a silly situation into surreal horror. José Luis López Vázquez‘s unfortunate character enters a freshly installed phone booth, only to then learn it neither works nor allows him to leave. As onlookers gather around and fail to help him,...

You know what I always missed when I watched Parks and Rec and The Office? Dead Bodies. I always thought, "Man, if only this took place at a funeral home." Well, it looks like my prayers have been answered, because that's just what Jamie Lee Curtis has started working on with CBS.
The project is called Quality of Life, and it is planned to be a multi-cam comedy in the same vein as Parks and Rec and Modern Family. I think that a funeral home has a lot of untapped potential. I mean how many comedies take place there? After Scream Queens was canceled after the second season, this will give Curtis a great comedy outlet. She has proven herself in the world of comedy in the past couple years in my eyes.

Warning: This post contains spoilers from Outlander‘s Season 3 premiere.
One very important character literally comes to life in Outlander‘s Season 3 premiere, while two others blink out of existence thanks to the Battle of Culloden and its bloody, near*-merciless aftermath.
The Starz drama’s return quickly makes it clear: We’re not just treading water until Mr. and Mrs. Fraser reunite. Both Claire and Jamie’s stories are compelling on their own (though for what it’s worth, I find his a little more interesting — how can housewife ennui compete with a last-minute stay of execution?!), and having...

Watching Baywatch, the R-rated reboot of the long-running '90s primetime soap, I finally understood how doctors and lawyers must feel when they watch TV, how difficult it is to focus on plot when your chosen profession is being depicted wildly irresponsibly. Having guarded lives throughout my teenage years, I must ask: are any of these people even CPR certified?! (Dead bodies do occasionally just wash ashore, though. That is true.)
Anyway, Baywatch revolves around "Lieutenant" Mitch Buchannon (Dwayne Johnson, taking on David Hasselhoff's small screen namesake), a lifeguard so proficient at his job that he knows when an accident is going to happen before it even happens, and his newest trainee: Matt Brody (Zac Efron playing, essentially, Ryan Lochte, had he attempted to rehabilitate his post-Olympics image by lifeguarding instead of Dancing With the Stars).

Unusual partnerships. Crime fighting duos. Main characters who made fans crazy as they danced around the will they/won’t they for years!
But they had their differences too.

The films of the 1980s were ripe with electric guitars, new wave style and heavy-handed moralizing. Lessons were learned, obstacles surmounted, montages cut and forced upon audiences with reckless abandon. We laughed, we loved and most importantly, we learned. What did we learn? Well, with the cyclical return to school dovetailing ever so neatly with the recent wave of '80s nostalgia sparked by Stranger Things, we're taking a look at some life lessons a returning student can glean from the films of the 1980s. 1. We chatted to Charlie Brooker, Jon Hamm and Rafe Spall about tech dystopia Black Mirror’s terrific festive episode, White Christmas…
This interview contains a spoiler for, er, The Snowman.
Airing tonight on Channel 4 is White Christmas, a feature-length episode of Black Mirror that weaves together three tech-paranoia tales set against the backdrop of the festive season. Writer Charlie Brooker likens the special to a selection box - a sound description if you can imagine Cadbury’s substituting Crunchies and Curly Wurlies for tragicomic ruminations on voyeurism, torture and ostracisation.
It’s a terrific ninety minutes; funny, acerbic and eventually horrifying. It feels exactly like watching a condensed series of Black Mirror in a single sitting, which should be both recommendation and warning to fans of the show. However disturbing a reflection of our world Brooker shows us though, in his own words, “There’s nothing in that that...

In the opening scene of Shakespeare’s Hamlet, Horatio visits with watchmen in the middle of the night, waiting to see the ghost of the king that the watchmen have reported. He does, and says with shock, “… in the gross and scope of my opinion, / This bodes some strange eruption to our state.” It’s nighttime in Charming. The prince has become the king, and war is underway. “Some Strange Eruption” shows Jax continuing to see what he wants, blinded by misplaced rage. By the end of the episode, it’s night — dark and mysterious — and everyone is on the edge of a waking hour that’s certain to conjure ghosts and more revenge. As “Some Strange Eruption” opens, the carnage from the massacre at Diosa is still fresh. Jax sits on a couch, eyes cold, dragging on a cigarette. Dead bodies surround him. Jax’s apparent calm at the...

Rating: 3 out of 5 stars
Things have picked up considerably on this season of the Walking Dead after the highly debated episode “Claimed” last week in which we saw the survivors deal with a more real world threat than that of the walking dead itself. While discussing last week’s episode with friends, I found a lot of people surprisingly split with a majority feeling that there wasn’t enough action. As mentioned from my “Claimed” review, I found the episode extremely heart pounding as Rick tried desperately to evade the marauders during their raid on the house. The heart pounding intensity was some of the best on the entire run of the show as I find the constant search for survival and protection to be the true tone.
“Still” starts off with Beth and Daryl stranded in the wilderness together, wondering if they are the only two survivors left from the prison.

The haunted house subgenre has been a horror mainstay for years, and it's alive and well to this day. The Conjuring cleaned up at the box office, proving that audiences are still just as interested in disturbing domiciles as ever. In haunted house films, the location is just as important, if not more so, than the human inhabitants, and as a general rule, the less inviting the house appears on screen, the greater the potential for malady... although as you'll see, that's not always the case. While we wholeheartedly enjoy a good horror film, we would be more than a little reluctant to settle down (or even spend one night) in any of the homes featured in our favorite haunted house flicks. Below, behold eight houses we would most certainly not want to live in... The Freeling's House in Poltergeist As a general rule, building a home atop an occupied...

Zombie stories range from the absurd (in films like Chopper Chicks in Zombietown) to the allegedly realistic (most recently in World War Z), but they all hinge on the question of what you would do in a worldwide outbreak of brain-eaters. Now that zombies have become possibly the most revered monster in horror and popular cinema (with Twilight vampires not counting because they aren’t real monsters), some people have wondered how fictional the day rising up is, but since we like to think outside the coffin, we started wondering: If a zombie apocalypse did happen, how long would it actually last? The Answer: Only a few months Obviously, the main ingredient needed for a zombie apocalypse is zombies. However...

Moderator Chris Hardwick promises that in addition to the announced projects we will see today, there are several surprises in store today. Congratulating those who waited in line all day to get inside the hall, Hardwick says screw those who didn’t.
2:37 Pm: The walls are alive! 3D images of computer files line the screens, with data, radar, and cryptic data encircling the stage. Legendary producer Thomas Tull gets a huge response merely mentioning Guillermo Del Toro’s name.

In the realm of relationships between humans and animals, there are few as rewarding or profound as that between man and dog. It's difficult to describe to those who've never had a pet, but a dog will give its loyalty and love wholly and without question. They see us at our best and worst, often remaining by our sides through moves, breakups, marriages, deaths and more, ever faithful, ever loving. Once a dog takes root in your life, that presence is one that benefits both and when it ends, that void can be as deep as losing a friend or family member, simply because, they are your friend and family. But unfortunately, America's relationship with canines is a troubled one, with overfilled shelters, puppy mills and abuse still rampant, leading to something of a crisis with millions of dogs put down each year. "One Nation Under Dog: Stories Of Fear,...

The R-Rated The Moth Diaries is Mary Harron's new horror film.
To horror film fans, she's more affectionately known as the woman who directed the American Psycho film adaptation from the novel by Bret Easton Ellis. Her films I Shot Andy Warhol, and The Notorious Bettie Page are just as respected by wider circles, however.
The Moth Diaries is based on the novel by Rachel Klein Klein, which tells the story of Rebecca (played by Sarah Bolger in Harron's film), a young girl haunted by her father’s suicide who enrolls in an elite boarding school for girls. A mysterious new girl named Ernessa (Lily Cole) threatens Rebecca’s friendship with the popular Lucy (Sarah Gadon). Lucy falls under Ernessa’s charismatic spell. Rebecca turns to her handsome English teacher, Mr. Davies (Scott Speedman), and throws herself into his literature class and the Gothic vampire novel Carmilla. Rebecca starts...

"I want to thank three persons,” said Michel Hazanavicius, accepting the 2012 Best Picture Oscar for “The Artist.” “I want to thank Billy Wilder, I want to thank Billy Wilder and I want to thank Billy Wilder.” He wasn’t the first director to namecheck Wilder in an acceptance speech. In 1994, Fernando Trueba, accepting the Foreign Language Film Oscar for "Belle Epoque" quipped, "I would like to believe in God in order to thank him. But I just believe in Billy Wilder... so, thank you Mr. Wilder." Wilder reportedly called the next day "Fernando? It's God."
So just what exactly was it that inspired these men to expend some of the most valuable seconds of speechifying airtime they'll ever know, to tip their hats to Wilder? And can we bottle it?
Born in a region of Austria/Hungary that is now part of Poland, Wilder's story feels like an archetype of...

The director of The Wackness and 50/50, Jonathan Levine, is in negotiations to direct a film called Dead Spy Running. The film is an adaptation of a book written by John Stock. Levine is a talented director, and is slowly moving away from from the indie film world and into the mainstream. His next movie is a Twilight-looking zombie romance film called Dead Bodies, and now there's this spy film he might end up directing for Warner Bros. I love spy thrillers, and this sounds like it's going to be a good one.

Given the sheer logistics of conceiving, producing and distributing a film, the claim that any current theatrical release speaks to the moment is a precarious proposition at best — and yet, we can't help ourselves. Even aware as we are that it'd be impossible to aim a film at a starting date when all the world will be hitting precisely the same talking points as those outlined in the screenplay, we spot patterns, serendipitous as they may be. Margin Call, for example, would have been "timely" on any given weekend in the past three years, but it had the luck to be released two weeks ago, just as the media's affair with the Occupy Wall Street movement was in full bloom. What's more, as noted in the roundup, while a few strong arguments have been made against it, convincing cases have been made for Margin Call as a viewer-friendly illustration of...

Sandman Meditations – Worlds’ End: “Cerements”
The word necropolis etymologically means “city of the dead”, but its everyday definition is “cemetery” or “burial ground”. In the penultimate chapter of Worlds’ End, the necropolis of Litharge is more literal — a city built from the dead and devoted to the dead, a metropolis of morticians.
It’s an evocative, strangely beautiful idea. Certainly, it’s efficient: with all the corpses and their detritus contributing to the creation and maintenance of the city (once the appropriate rituals have been attended to), Litharge provides a model of sustainability, with one of the best recycling programs in all the Sandman stories.
“Cerements” also presents the most deeply nested storytelling of any yet, with stories within stories within stories within — well, honestly, I lost count. The structure of the storytelling echoes the complexity of the catacombs beneath Litharge.
Life and death are stories, but there is a...

Tonight on 'America's Next Top TV Personality': Dead bodies, big words and beautiful male models are the all-stars' obstacles of the evening. In a CSI audition, whether the models can act becomes less of an issue than whether they can read, and then, a photo shoot for Express challenges them to model! In clothes! With other models! Yeah, that second part is pretty standard.

I know this is supposed to be a Game of Thrones recap, but I must ask: is anyone else watching The Killing on AMC? I am, and it’s on right before Game of Thrones.
It’s one of those shows where the whole season is devoted to solving one murder. Weirdly, this week’s episode had nothing to do with the murder itself – it was a side-trek where we learn a little bit about the pasts of the two very flawed characters who are trying to solve the murder.
And it was amazing.
I confess it was so good that tonight’s episode of Game of Thrones, which was perfectly fine, may have suffered a little by comparison. It’s a little like Cougar Town, which I think I might like if I didn’t watch it after Modern Family, which is a thousand times better written (and much,...

HollywoodNews.com: Despite the wealth (no pun intended) of filmmakers interested in investing in a future blockbuster, James Cameron is one of the few folks in Hollywood who puts his money where his mouth is: After investing some $300 million in 3D technology developing his own camera system in order to shoot “Avatar,” he’s further funding the use of 3D by executive producing “Sanctum,” director Alister Grierson’s story of a group of cave divers who get trapped miles underground. Combining state-of-the-art camera technology with firecracker storytelling, Cameron hopes to further expand 3D’s presence in the movie marketplace – both commercially and artistically.
Hollywood News sat down with Cameron, Grierson, producer Andrew Wight, and stars Richard Roxburgh and Rhys Wakefield at the recent Los Angeles press day for “Sanctum,” where the cast and crew talked at length about the many physical and technical challenges they faced while trying to bring this story to life.

Dario Argento is a legend in the horror genre, but he’s also an incredibly hit or miss director. (Unless you’re someone who needs cohesive plots in movies, then all of his films are probably misses.) The label is probably befitting of many film-makers, but Argento stands apart in a singular way. The quality of most directors’ work ranges film to film with their best and worst mingling side by side throughout the years. Argento on the other hand created a string of brilliant films up through the mid eighties… and has been releasing garbage ever since. UK label extraordinaire Arrow Video has been collecting, gussying up, and releasing editions of Argento’s work for a short while now. Their catalog includes DVD releases of his later (and therefore lesser) works, but they’ve also started producing sharp and beautifully packaged Blu-rays of his older classics. Inferno hit shelves last year (my review here), and Arrow...

The block of programming at 8:00 p.m. Et on Thursdays is a source of conflict for all of us. It might be the most congested hour of good TV all week.
So as much as this baseball-induced "Bones" mini-hiatus may hurt, it should ease the burden on our dual-tuner -- and our heart.
But how to spend that extra hour of tube consumption while still satisfying your deep, human need for a "Bones" fix? Well that depends on why you watch...

Moira’s search has led her to a small California town, where a gruesome ritual was interrupted by a man supposedly in a coma. As Moira butts heads with an old rival, they learn that Fiona was attempting to summon the demons behind the seven deadly sin, and unless Moira can stop her, Fiona will bring all hell to earth.

Neil Labute's remake of Death at a Funeral opens this week, and it got me thinking as to how much mirth has been generated over the years by the demise of some poor onscreen sucker. Think of the advantages these corpses have. They make the perfect straight man and they never flub a punchline. And, if handled correctly, a dead body can flop out of a coffin or roll down a hill with comic aplomb. Hence, here are seven comedies centered around dead bodies:
1. The Trouble with Harry (1955, Alfred Hitchcock)
This is actually my favorite Hitchcock film; it's one of only two flat-out comedies the Master made, and the other one (Mr. and Mrs. Smith) is more like a standard screwball. This one is rich with the kind of sinister black humor that the director included in his coming attractions trailers and TV shows. It also has a truly gorgeous Technicolor autumn countryside setting,...
