The Good and Bad of 'Returns'
13 October 2009 | by See all my reviews

Now, I know I"m well behind review this movie, since its been out for 3 years, but I still want to review it. I was there with bells on when the announcement of Superman Returns came about and the news that it was dovetailing off of the Donner universe was a brilliant idea to me.

Brandon Routh, even though I wish he would have talked more in the film, was an excellent Superman/Clark Kent. Kate Bosworth was a decent Lois Lane. Frank Langella was a good Perry White, and Kevin Spacey was a decent Lex, but it was the giant plot holes in the movie that bothered me and also the fact that Superman essentially didn't throw one single punch in the entire duration of the movie. In that manner, I found that extremely boring.

Also, (continuing with what I disliked) here we have Lex Luthor, great criminal mind, with ANOTHER REAL ESTATE SCAM. I mean, in the comics, he was blowing stuff up and creating super-beings, and doing stuff to destroy Superman. Here we have....LAND (again). He was more sinister and pimped in the comics, animation, and Smallville.

AND......the fact that they wrote a kid into the movie. Like the scene where the kid's practically having an asthma attack while watching Lois being backed into a corner and he pitches a piano across the room and kills the man. As a typical movie viewer, I should have been excited about seeing that, but I found it fairly sloppy, lazy, writing. (lol) She has that look like, "Maybe the child is Superman's" which kinda dumbs her down because she's suppose to be a Pulitzer's prize journalist..... (even though in Superman 2, after the amnesia kiss, she doesn't remember them having sex when he gave up his powers, but oh well)

But, I do love the nostalgic feel of the movie, the airplane scene was awesome, the nods to the original film, and the cinematography was purely awesome. Like I said, there were some things that I could have done without, but overall, I was okay with the movie. I saw it twice in theaters and I brought it on DVD.
