Treadway is right answer at 'Crosswords'

Treadway is right answer at 'Crosswords'
Ty Treadway, best known for his role on ABC's One Life to Live and for co-hosting SoapNet's Soap Talk, has been tapped to host the upcoming syndicated game show Let's Play Crosswords.

In addition, Brennan Huntington -- who has produced, directed and/or developed programming for such networks as GSN, ESPN, MTV, VH1, Nickelodeon, NBC, Lifetime and E! -- has been named showrunner of the half-hour strip, from Program Partners and Merv Griffin Entertainment.

The companies said Treadway was "handpicked" by Griffin to host the show, putting him in such company as Alex Trebek and Pat Sajak, who were picked by Griffin to host "Jeopardy!" and Wheel of Fortune, respectively. Treadway played Dr. Colin MacIver on One Life to Live from 2000-01 and co-hosted Soap Talk with Lisa Rinna from 2002-06, during which time the duo earned three Daytime Emmy nominations for outstanding talk show host.

"Ty exudes the kind of energy that will keep audiences engaged and excited," Griffin said. "We are looking towards a long and successful association."

Meanwhile, Raymond Brune and Andrew Yani, co-heads of TV at MGE, will oversee the show with Griffin.

CBS's 'Light,' 'World' lead Daytime Emmy noms

CBS's 'Light,' 'World' lead Daytime Emmy noms
NEW YORK -- CBS and two of its long-running daytime dramas, "Guiding Light" and "As the World Turns", garnered the most nominations Wednesday for the 34th annual Daytime Emmy Awards.

CBS received 57 nominations, well ahead of PBS' 38 and ABC's 36, which were the only networks to receive more than 16. Syndicated programming received 53 noms. PBS received 20 nominations Wednesday and collected the other 18 during last month's Children's Emmy nominations.

"The Price Is Right" host Bob Barker, 83, who is retiring in June after more than three decades with the show, has a shot at an 18th Daytime Emmy Award with a nomination for outstanding game-show host.

The awards ceremony will be held Friday, June 15, at the Kodak Theatre at Hollywood & Highland and broadcast live in primetime on CBS. A Creative Arts Award ceremony will take place a day earlier.

"Guiding Light", the longest-running soap in production (it went to air on TV in 1952), received the most noms of any show with 17, while "As the World Turns" (which debuted in 1956) followed with 16. Three shows -- PBS' "Sesame Street", "The Ellen DeGeneres Show" and CBS' "The Young & the Restless" -- each received 12 mentions. ABC trio "General Hospital", "One Life to Live" and "The View" received 10 apiece.

For the first time in more than 20 years, "Live With Regis and Kelly" (formerly "Live! With Regis and Kathie Lee") didn't make the talk show or talk show host categories. This was intentional on the part of the show, which instead entered a new Daytime Emmy category of outstanding morning program. It's open to shows that air before noon. Talk shows can either enter the existing categories or the new morning-program category but not both.

Nominations for the new award will be announced sometime in April. The Emmy will go to the producers and the hosts, which means that "Today" co-host Meredith Vieira might add a second nom to go with her nomination for best game show host.

"Guiding Light", CBS' "The Bold and the Beautiful", "One Life to Live" and "Young & the Restless" received nominations for outstanding drama series. "Jeopardy", "Price" and "Who Wants to Be a Millionaire" received noms in the game-show category.

Talk show nominations went to "Dr. Phil", "Ellen DeGeneres Show", "The Tyra Banks Show", "Rachael Ray" and "The View". Lifestyle program nominations went to Food Network's "Barefoot Contessa" and "Paula's Home Cooking", A&E's "Sell This House", PBS' "This Old House" and the syndicated "Martha Stewart Show".

Nominations for lead actress in a drama series are Maura West in "As the World Turns", Crystal Chappell and Kim Zimmer in "Guiding Light" and Jeanne Cooper and Michelle Stafford in "Young & the Restless."

Lead actor nominations were given to Michael Park in "As the World Turns", Anthony Geary in "General Hospital", Ricky Paull Goldin in "Guiding Light" and Peter Bergman and Christian LeBlanc in "Young & the Restless."

Game-show host nods went to Barker, Vieira ("Who Wants to Be a Millionaire"), Ben Bailey (Discovery Channel's "Cash Cab"), Alex Trebek ("Jeopardy!"), Pat Sajak ("Wheel of Fortune").

Vieira's former colleagues at "View" -- Barbara Walters, Rosie O'Donnell, Joy Behar and Elisabeth Hasselbeck -- shared a nomination in the talk-show host category along with Ellen DeGeneres, Rachael Ray, Phil McGraw ("Dr. Phil"), Lisa Rinna and Ty Treadway ("Soap Talk") and Tyra Banks ("Tyra Banks Show").

Others networks nominated were Discovery Kids (16, including one announced Wednesday), NBC (15), Kids' WB! (10), Food Network (seven), Nickelodeon (five), A&E (four), Discovery Channel (three) and two each for Cartoon Network, Fox, Noggin and Soap Net. One each went to Animania, Disney Channel, HGTV, Lifetime, MTV, TBN, TLC and Travel Channel. Warnerbros.com earned a nom.

Several of the noms, particularly in the children's categories, were previously announced.

SoapNet suds up with more 'Talk'

Cable network SoapNet has greenlighted a third season of its weekday talk show Soap Talk. Production on Soap Talk, which is hosted by Lisa Rinna and Ty Treadway, begins Oct. 1, with the third-season premiere scheduled for 11 a.m. Oct. 11 (with repeats airing at 11 p.m. weeknights). The Daytime Emmy-nominated show features celebrity interviews, fashion and cooking segments and musical appearances. Kari Sagin is executive producer, Susan Nessanbaum-Goldberg is executive in charge of production, and Jeff Hudson is supervising producer. SoapNet vp original programming Mary Ellen DiPrisco oversees production.

SoapNet series profiles daytime stars

SoapNet series profiles daytime stars
SoapNet has greenlighted a new original series to begin in June. Back-to-back half-hour episodes of Soapography, which profiles leading soap opera actors, will begin running weekends between 6-7 p.m. The Walt Disney Co.-owned channel has yet to decide how many episodes will be ordered or which production company will produce them. Susan Lucci, Deidre Hall, Rebecca Budig and Peter Bergman are among the soap stars expected to get Soapography treatment. SoapNet has launched only two original series in its four-year history: the Emmy-nominated talk show Soap Talk and Soap Center, which no longer produces new episodes. The channel, which is in 37 million homes, subsists largely on rebroadcasts of ABC daytime programming. Sister cable network Disney Channel has greenlighted a third installment to its original movie franchise Halloweentown to air in the fall. Debbie Reynolds, Kimberly J. Brown, Joey Zimmerman and Judith Hoag will return for Halloweentown 3, which goes into production next week. Writer Dan Berendsen (The Scream Team) and director Mark Dippe (Pixel Perfect) are working on Halloweentown 3. The film will be executive produced by Sheri Singer (Right on Track).

'View' from the top of Emmy race

NEW YORK -- ABC daytime series The View led all talk shows with 10 nominations for the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences' 30th annual Daytime Emmy Awards. With the nominations announced live Wednesday morning on their own program, the cast of View celebrated being in the running for best talk show and a combined nomination for Barbara Walters, Star Jones, Lisa Ling, Meredith Vieira and Joy Behar for best talk show hosts. Other nominees in the talk show host category are Phil McGraw for his freshman hit syndicated series Dr. Phil, Regis Philbin and Kelly Ripa for Live! With Regis & Kelly, Lisa Rinna and Ty Treadway for SoapTalk on the SoapNet cable channel and Wayne Brady for his new syndicated talk-variety series The Wayne Brady Show. All four of those shows were also nominated in the talk show category. The picks for top drama series were CBS' As the World Turns, The Bold and the Beautiful and The Young & the Restless and ABC's Port Charles. Last year's winner, ABC's One Life to Live, was not nominated. Among the competitors in the drama series and acting categories, ABC's All My Children led with 17 nominations, followed by CBS' Guiding Light with 14 and ABC's General Hospital and CBS' Y&R with 12 apiece.

Rinna to 'Merge' in Lifetime pilot

NEW YORK -- Lifetime has tapped Lisa Rinna to host a pilot for a new reality series being considered for primetime. The one-hour Merge comes to the rescue of newly married couples who are trying to decide which of their personal possessions they should trash or stash in their new household. A design team "merges" a couple's belongings while they are away on their honeymoon. Dalaklis McKeown Entertainment (Weddings of a Lifetime) will produce the series, with Chuck Dalaklis and Theresa McKeown executive producing. Rinna co-hosts SoapTalk on SoapNet. Her other TV credits include Days of Our Lives, Melrose Place and the Lifetime telefilms Sex, Lies & Obsession and Another Woman's Husband. Merge could follow in the footsteps of a new fleet of reality programming for Lifetime, including Final Justice with Erin Brockovich, which bowed in January, and What Should You Do? coming next month. "We have more nonfiction programming in development now than ever before," said Bill Brand, senior vp reality programming at Lifetime.
