El Estudio and Morbido are launching The Latin House of Horror, a hugely ambitious feature film slate channelling the voices of a powerful new generation of genre directors – and indeed writers – emerging in Spain and, most especially, Latin America.
The slate is designed to supercharge genre production in Latin America, in ambition, profile and exports, just as Filmax’s Fantastic Factory did a generation ago in Spain, El Estudio producer Enrique López Lavigne told Variety.
Mexico’s Sula Films, headed by Mexican producer Alejandro Sugich (“Los Hermanos Salvador”), will also produce the series. Vicente Canales’ Film Factory Entertainment is handling world sales.
Announced at Cannes, the House’s first slate of six movies features established talent such as Adrián García Bogliano, a founding figure of modern Argentine scarefare, now based out of Mexico; and Isaac Ezban, who rapidly established a reputation for films wrapped in hauntingly surreal scenarios: Think “The Incident” and “The Similars.

Michelle Williams was Academy Award-nominated for playing screen icon Marilyn Monroe and won an Emmy for transforming into Broadway star Gwen Verdon, but it seems that Williams will not take the mic to be singer Peggy Lee for an upcoming biopic anymore.
The “Showing Up” actress confirmed that the slated Peggy Lee biopic “Fever” with writer-director Todd Haynes is officially dead.
“It’s gone the way of the buffalo, I’m afraid,” Williams told Variety in a cover story. “But if anyone reading this story would like to resurrect it, Todd and I are on board for that.”
“The Many Saints of Newark” breakout Alessandro Nivola was set to play Dave Barbour, with Doug Wright penning the screenplay. Director Haynes, meanwhile, helmed the experimental Bob Dylan biopic “I’m Not There” and the documentary “The Velvet Underground.” The “Carol” director is currently readying for the drama “May December” with Julianne Moore and Natalie Portman.

Steven Spielberg to Direct Film Based on His Youth; Michelle Williams in Talks to Star as His Mother
Steven Spielberg has found his next directing project as the filmmaker will direct an untitled coming-of-age film loosely based on his childhood growing up in Arizona. Four-time Oscar nominee Michelle Williams is in talks to star in the project in a major role inspired by the filmmaker’s mother.
Although plot details are being kept under wraps, Spielberg co-wrote the script with frequent collaborator Tony Kushner, who most recently wrote “West Side Story,” along with “Munich,” and “Lincoln.”
Screen tests are currently under way with young actors to fill the role inspired by a young Spielberg. The film will also explore the relationship with the lead character’s parents across the decades.
The untitled film is eyeing a summer production start with a release date planned for sometime in 2022.
“West Side Story” stars Ansel Elgort and up-and-comer Rachel Zegler, and will open later this year on Dec. 21 after being delayed for a year.

Steven Spielberg will direct a coming-of-age movie that is loosely based on his own childhood growing up in Arizona. Michelle Williams is in talks to star in the untitled film in a major role.
Spielberg co-wrote the script with Tony Kushner, who penned “Munich,” “Lincoln” and “West Side Story” for the director. Screen tests are being conducted to find young actors of multiple ages to round out the cast, and one of them will play the role inspired by a young Spielberg.
There aren’t many plot details available for the film, other than it will focus on a main character, who is not named Steven, as a young child and teen. The protagonist will be living in Phoenix, Arizona, which is where Spielberg lived in the late 1950s and early 1960s. The film will also examine the character’s relationship with his parents and be split across time periods.

Breaking: Though his adaptation of West Side Story is not set to make its premiere till later this year, Steven Spielberg looks to have found his next directing gig, one of which is very close to home. Sources tell Deadline that Spielberg is coming on to direct an untitled pic at Amblin Partners that is loosely based on his childhood growing up in Arizona. Insiders add that Michelle Williams is in negotiations to star in a major role inspired by his mom but with a separate and original voice.
Given how personal the story is, this will also mark the first time since A.I. that Spielberg will partake in screenwriting duties, co-writing the script with Tony Kushner, who has penned several Spielberg movies in the past. The film will start shooting this summer with an expectation that it will be released sometime in 2022.

The artistic sensibilities of filmmaker Todd Haynes and Michelle Williams seem perfectly matched. And the collaborations have happened—the two previously partnered on “I’m Not Here,” and “Wonderstruck,” but these were all minor supporting parts. That’s now changing as Haynes and Williams are getting together for her first lead role in one of his movies—the long-in-development biopic of popular American singer Peggy Lee called, “Fever,” which Haynes had hoped to make years ago with Reese Witherspoon in the lead spot.

Michelle Williams to Play Peggy Lee in Biopic for Director Todd Haynes, Billie Eilish Eyeing EP Role
Michelle Williams is on board to portray another entertainment icon, in the Peggy Lee biopic “Fever” for director Todd Haynes, Variety has confirmed. MGM is in talks to back the film. Marc Platt, Reese Witherspoon, and Killer Films’ Pamela Koffler and Christine Vachon are producing. Doug Wright (“Quills”) is writing the screenplay.
Billie Eilish, her mother Maggie Baird, and Justin Lubliner, CEO of Eilish’s label Darkroom, are also in early discussions about possibly coming aboard the film as executive producers. Eilish has cited Lee as an inspiration; in December 2019, the singer-songwriter told Variety, “I used to listen to tons of old music — Frank Sinatra, Peggy Lee, Etta James, Johnny Mathis and people like that — where all the songs had a perfect songwriting structure.”

A biopic of Peggy Lee that’s been kicking around Hollywood for nearly a decade is getting revived by “Far From Heaven” and “Carol” director Todd Haynes. Deadline has the scoop that Haynes will reunite with his “I’m Not There” and “Wonderstuck” star Michelle Williams, who will play the jazz chanteuse in the film. Williams is stepping in for Reese Witherspoon, who was attached when the project was first announced back in 2014. The script is written by Tony and Pulitzer winner Doug Wright.
Billie Eilish is also in talks to come on board as an executive producer, as she is an admirer of the vocalist, who burst out of the big band era and died in 2002. Michelle Williams is attached to star in the biopic “Fever” about the life of singer Peggy Lee. The film will now be directed by Todd Haynes, and MGM is in talks to acquire it, two individuals told TheWrap.
“Fever” was once a project that had Reese Witherspoon attached to star with a screenplay by the late Nora Ephron, but this latest package of the film is still in its early days.
Pop star Billie Eilish has expressed interest in being an executive producer on the film along with her mother, Maggie Baird, and record label boss Justin Lubliner. Eilish previously participated in an online 100th anniversary celebration of Lee’s contributions to music.
“Fever” began as a project under Fox 2000, but was put on hold after Ephron passed away in 2012 and after Witherspoon departed the film. Fox 2000 was then closed in Disney’s acquisition of 20th Century Fox, and the project was shelved.

The Grammy Award for Best New Artist is a push from the industry for their favorite up-and-coming musicians making waves. While some past winners have admittedly faded away, a lot went on to become decade-defining or even generation-defining artists, like The Beatles (1965), Mariah Carey (1991) and Adele (2009). Let’s see who’s in line this year to join this list of influential winners.

“Dancing with the Stars” is celebrating Halloween a little differently this year, holding a Villains Night in lieu of a generic spooky season one on Monday. That means the top 10 couples will be channeling some iconic pop culture baddies while dancing to some songs that are wee bit on the nose, but what do you expect from the show that gave Carole Baskin three feline songs in a row?
The costumes include Nurse Ratched (unclear if this is Louis Fletcher‘s Nurse Ratched or Sarah Paulson‘s), Cruella de Vil (hopefully the costume department will take a page out of Glenn Close‘s homemade one) and Hannibal Lecter (bonus points if they do Mads Mikkelsen‘s instead of Anthony Hopkins‘). Jeannie Mai has the cannibalistic serial killer and she’s dancing to — wait for it — “Maneater.” Meanwhile, Nelly‘s got “Can’t Feel My Face” for his Freddy Krueger get-up.

“Stranger Things” fans, we’ve got some news that will turn your frown upside down while you await the arrival of Season 4.
Well, if you are a Los Angeles-based “Stranger Things” fan, that is, because Netflix is bringing the mysteries of Hawkins, Indiana, to Downtown Los Angeles this October in a pandemic-friendly way through “Stranger Things: The ‘Drive-Into’ Experience,” an “immersive theatrical production” that will let take attendees inside scenes “all from the safety of their own cars.”
The Duffer Brothers-created show “will be transformed into an immersive theatrical production, complete with mind-bending sets, actors in costume, and otherworldly special effects. Upon entry, guests will drive their vehicles (in groups of 24 cars) through the multi-level experience, stopping for extended periods of time for scenes to play out around them. They will then be guided to drive to the next scene, where they park again for another ‘chapter’ in the story.

Megan Thee Stallion took to the desert in a Mad Max: Fury Road-themed performance. The rapper won Best Female Hip-Hop Artist earlier in the evening.
The Houston rapper and her crew of female dancers opened her performance riding through the desert on ATVs. Once they stopped, she launched into her new single “Girls in the Hood” as the masked dancers twerked around her. For the Beyoncé-assisted “Savage (Remix),” she found her way to a stage and rapped over Bey’s runs in front of a painted Black power fist.

After a nearly 30-year gap between records, Los Angeles’ punk laureates X have dared to make a new album. As recently as three years ago, they said they would never even try to record something new. Even though the four musicians that recorded their landmark Los Angeles album had been playing together again for two decades at that point, they swore up and down that the chemistry wouldn’t be there. Luckily for them, they were wrong.

It’s a brisk December day in Houston, and Megan Thee Stallion is giving detailed notes on how, exactly, she wants her dancers to twerk. The beat to Yo Gotti’s “Pose” pulsates through White Oak Music Hall as the 25-year-old star prepares for a hometown show 24 hours from now, her biggest headlining concert in Houston to date. She is in an unbreakable trance, watching her choreographer and troupe with a strained eye. For hours, butt cheeks flap, knees dip, asses clap, legs split, feet stomp, and gravity is defied.

With a gentle yet commanding screen presence, Scott Wilson endeared himself to countless fans of AMC's The Walking Dead over the years, and we're sad to share the news that the actor has passed away at the age of 76.
Multiple sources have shared the sad news of Wilson's passing, with People reporting that the actor passed away "due to complications from leukemia," according to his rep, Dominic Mancini.
For three seasons on AMC's The Walking Dead, Wilson played Hershel Greene, a beacon of humanity in a relentlessly harsh world. The father of Maggie and Beth, Hershel was a character who often reminded Rick and other survivors that empathy and compassion were top shelf emotions that should be cherished and practiced, even in the post-apocalyptic wastelands. Wilson instilled a warmth in Hershel that radiated through the screen. He also gave the series a crucial sense of humor that helped balance...

Only Lovers Left Alive (voted by Rick)
Only Lovers Left Alive, the latest film from cult indie director Jim Jarmusch, stars Tom Hiddleston and Tilda Swinton as Adam and Eve, two century old vampires. Adam is an underground musician with a dedicated cult following. In his past time, he drives through the city in his classic Jaguar, collects music memorabilia, photographs, books, vintage musical instruments and old vinyls. He lives in an isolated home in the ruins of Detroit Michigan where he reunites with his enigmatic lover Eve. There, he enlists the help of one of his most dedicated fans (Anton Yelchin) to help collect the analog equipment he needs, and his doctor (Jeffrey Wright) to provide him with a steady supply of his favourite drink, type O-negative. Immortality is weighing on him and thoughts of suicide slowly take over. Not much happens, and not much needs to.

It may be a case of art to ashes - and scientists are trying to get to the bottom of the mystery. A Romanian museum official said Wednesday that ash from the oven of a woman whose son is charged with stealing seven multimillion-dollar paintings - including a Matisse, a Picasso and a Monet - contains paint, canvas and nails. The finding is evidence that Olga Dogaru may have been telling the truth when she claimed to have burned the paintings, which were taken from a Dutch museum last year in a daring daylight heist. Ernest Oberlander-Tarnoveanu, director of Romania's National History Museum,...

I don’t often offer my opinion on what a publisher should or should not do with their lineup of titles—that’s business, not storytelling. But when something like DC’s Dial H gets canceled, likely in favor of another ordinary superhero book, I feel the need to say something. Numbers are numbers, of course, and often speak louder than storytelling, but the fact is that Dial H #13 is a veritable masterpiece, able to be read by just about anyone regardless of their familiarity with the series, and a perfect example of science fiction weirdness brought to its emotional best. Its impending cancelation is embarrassing.

This “labor of love,” as writer-director Mia Goldman describes her feature debut on the commentary track she shares with her “key collaborators” (producers, cinematographer, editor), is intended as a counter to the onslaught of cinematic violence that typically assaults us and yet “divorces us from an experience of a violent act.” It’s also based on her own understanding as a woman who was stalked, raped, and now lives with the aftermath of that experience, which is perhaps why it avoids all the overblown histrionics of other similar films that have dealt with such subject matter -- see the output of the Lifetime cable network, for instance -- and finds the quiet but difficult core of the act of will that is survival and recovery. When photographer Izzy (Robin Tunney: TV’s Prison Break; Goldman tailored the role for her) is raped in her own home by a stranger who’d stalked her,...

The 1980s ABC romantic comedy Moonlighting told the story of former model Maddie Hayes and detective David Addison as they ran a Los Angeles-based detective agency. The series' big draw was the fiery relationship of the main characters and their trademark quick repartee.
Moonlighting quickly made Bruce Willis a household name and revived Cybill Shepherd's acting career. Unfortunately, backstage fighting caused the series to falter and it ended after 66 episodes. The series performers moved on to many other projects but now one half of the famous duo is ready to resurrect the series.
