When was the last time you left a movie smiling and laughing? The audience in the theatre last night were positively bubbly as the final credits rolled. What a welcome relief this movie is, coming at the end of a season of "outrage fatigue" brought on by all the political documentaries. It was lovely, sparkling, wicked, subtle, fun, and definitely an Oscar for Annette Bening. The cast was wonderful, and I must mention Michael Gambon, one of my favorite actors, who was just perfect as the drama teacher/director from the past -- who, though long deceased, was still coaching Julia from the wings. And best of all, this movie really captures in a delightful way, with not a trace of bathos, the joys, pains and ultimate triumph of "women of a certain age."
