Storyline

Alice Paul and the women of the 1917 Women's Suffrage movement fight for future generations right to vote and run for office. Sacrificing their health, marriages and the limited amount of freedom they had, women were imprisoned and force fed after picketing and hunger-striking against war-time president, Woodrow Wilson; but survived to see the results of their efforts. Although the final scene is said to take place in August, it's clearly late autumn (Lucy and Alice wear coats and trees are obviously losing their leaves). See more »

Quotes

Alice Paul: I found someone who designs parade floats.
Lucy Burns: Whoa, I thought we were going to keep this small.
Alice Paul: Why?
Lucy Burns: Because you've never organized a parade before. Neither have I. It's not like giving a dinner party.
Alice Paul: Have you ever given a dinner party?
Lucy Burns: No.
Alice Paul: Then what are you worried about?

Women should view
17 October 2004 | by debwSee all my reviews

I just viewed this film and was very moved by the story and the performances. Hillary Swank was excellent as Alice and brought a believability to the character which the history books cannot convey.

All women should view this film, especially those who choose not to vote. While I have always exercised my right to vote, I did not realize what sacrifices were made so that I would have that right. Viewing this film should be part of American History classes. I don't remember ever reading about this in my history class. What perfect timing to have it air before this very important election. It reminds us that most freedoms that we enjoy are only won after much fierce determination, sacrifice, and overcoming overwhelming odds.
