Might not mean much to anyone now, but a great deal back then

because this movie is a pioneer of personal liberalization: during the Cultural Revolution, even personal romance needed to be approved by the Party and although the Cultural Revolution had ended, the old thinking was still dominant, and this movie showed the eagerness of personal freedom in love and romance.

The literal translation of the title of this film is White Pigeon, which is the name of the protagonist in the movie.
