Plot Summary

Janet Fotheringay, to save her father from financial ruin, marries a millionaire suitor, John Arnold, a power in the street. Janet is in love with Dicky Bannister but sacrifices all for her father's honor. Arnold of course, turns out a brute and Janet, for this reason, keeps up her friendship with Bannister, the rising young playwright. One evening Mr. Courtney Fortheringay calls and attempts to interfere in Arnold's brutal treatment of Janet for which he receives a blow at the hands of Arnold, which causes him to fall to the floor striking his head and killing him. Arnold becomes a fugitive and makes his way out west. Before departing he cleverly simulates suicide and Janet, believing she is now free, marries Dicky Bannister, whom she has always loved. Bannister becomes a great success in his line and he and his wife are very happy with the child who has blessed their home. In the west, Arnold, who is going under an assumed name, becomes an outlaw for the second time. He sees a notice of Bannister's success in a newspaper and also notes that Bannister and Janet are man and wife. He plans to return and torment Janet. Bannister is busy with the rehearsals of his latest play on the night that Arnold returns to Janet. Janet protects herself with her husband's revolver and Bannister returns home just as his wife has been placed under arrest for the murder of Arnold. Weeks of anxiety follow, but in the end the jury returns a verdict of justifiable homicide, which brings happiness to all concerned. Written by Moving Picture World synopsis
