Writer-producer Simon Wolf made many classic Adult fantasy features at the turn of this century, largely forgotten because they seem diametrically opposed to the gonzo balls-to-the-wall product favored nowadays. "Blue Angel" directed by Bud Lee is typical light-hearted entertainment, sort of porn with a heart.
There are actually two angels in this piece, as Herschel Savage plays a crusty veteran angel who is assigned newly-dead Steven St. Croix to shepherd to the pearly gates by having him oversee good deeds back on Earth.
St. Croix plays a petty gangster done in by mob boss Evan Stone. George Kaplan, who collaborated on the script with Wolf, is also an actor here, playing (with accountant's old-fashioned eyeshades) the Routing Manager who coordinates who (upon death) will qualify for admittance to Heaven.
Asia Carrera, then married to Lee, is Kaplan's nerdy assistant, but providing her usual heat in sex scenes as Lee juggles situation comedy with XXX porn en route to a happy ending.
The light and frothy entertainment generated a sequel two years later titled "Blue Angels: The Second Coming", with St. Croix and Savage returning, and Steven entrusted with directing. Both films are fun introductions to a bygone porn genre dominated by Mr. Wolf.
