Barbara Crampton plays an actress whose daughter - thought dead - returns to complicate her life in Reborn
In the early part of the century, director Julian Richards made a big splash with films like Silent Cry and The Last Horror Movie. His was a distinctive voice and fans were eager to see what he would do next, but after 2007’s Summer Scars and a 2009 documentary about Charles Dickens, he disappeared from the radar. This year saw him return with two very different horror films, Daddy’s Girl and Reborn. I caught up with him after Halloween Frightfest, which screened the latter, to ask where he’s been all this time.
“It’s generally because it does take a while to develop a project with things like getting finance and getting it into production,” he explains. ”It often takes three or four years to go through that whole process and...

One might hope upon watching The Last Horror Movie that if it is not indeed the last of its genre, that perhaps it might be the last found footage horror movie. Alas, it came out in 2003, and that hopeful prophecy has most definitely not come to pass. The once-fresh subgenre has since been beaten into the dust by an overabundance of films that are low on budget as well as creativity, using found footage as a crutch upon which to lean a weak story. This one in particular, which has recently been re-released on DVD via Fangoria's Gorezone, focuses on Max (Kevin Howarth), a wedding videographer and serial killer living in London. Max has enlisted an unnamed assistant (Mark Stevenson) off the streets to help him document his killings, as well as random scenes of his regular life, on video, in order to show the world that the face of...

Found footage horror films are usually a tough trick to pull off well. Not only do they require realistic performances and events so that audiences are (at least partly) convinced that what they’re seeing is real enough for the length of the movie, but the filmmakers have to also balance that with telling a compelling, terrifying and – crucially – entertaining story. Some are more successful than others, with The Blair Witch Project and the [Rec] series being more obvious examples, but the found footage train has seemed to be running out of steam lately with many of the films made in the style regurgitating tropes that were only developed in the last twenty years and offering fuzzy, ill-executed plots that often only resolve when the protagonists buy the farm.

Following its release in North America last year, director Julian Richards' debut horror feature, Darklands, is finally now available on DVD in the UK as well courtesy of Metrodome Distribution. Check out its impressive new cover art.
From the Press Release:
Starring Craig Fairbrass (Cliffhanger), Jon Finch (Frenzy), and Rowena King (Wild Saragossa Sea), Darklands is frequently compared to Robin Hardy’s 1970’s cult classic The Wicker Man, but the writer/director also acknowledges a debt to Roman Polanski’s Rosemary's Baby.
Darklands, which won the Melies D’Argent for Best European Fantasy Film in 1997, launched the directing career of Julian Richards, who went on to helm Silent Cry, The Last Horror Movie, Summer Scars, and Shiver, whilst producer Paul Brooks produced Shadow of the Vampire, White Noise, and Haunting in Connecticut.

What does it take to empower someone? So many people sort of get lost along the way and spend their time riding the tide of life with no control of their direction. The world is full of victims that can’t find the shore. I was reminded of this while watching Shiver, the new film by Julian Richards. In his film, The Last Horror Movie, he took us so deep into the mind of a killer that it made us uncomfortable. This time we see the mind of the victim and in this case, it is no more comforting.
Shiver begins with a murder at a local dinner called Cadillac Jacks. The murder isn’t particularly graphic but the level of cruelty is intense. It’s the look on the victim’s face that stays with you. This is how we are introduced to The Gryphon, the seriously disturbed killer played John Jarratt.

In The Seasoning House young girls are prostituted to the military. An orphaned deaf mute is enslaved to care for them. She moves between the walls and crawlspaces planning her escape. Planning her ingenious and brutal revenge. The Seasoning House looks to be a grim unforgiving (think Taken meets Hostel with a strong emphasis on realism) tale of outright chaos and terror. From this vantage point it seems to be the kind of picture that genre fans completely flip their lids over. The film is directed by Paul Hyett and written by Paul Hyett and Conal Palmer and stars Rosie Day Sean Pertwee (Dog Soldiers) and Kevin Howarth (The Last Horror Movie).

Chosen for the opening night of London FrightFest 2012, the film has being going down well with fans and critics at a variety of international festivals, and has a solid cast that includes Rosie Day (“Ironclad 2”), Anna Walton (“Hellboy 2”) and Kevin Howarth (“The Last Horror Movie”), with much-loved Brit character actor and genre mainstay Sean Pertwee (“Dog Soldiers”) in an entertainingly villainous role. The film has a grim premise, being set in a Balkan brothel where unfortunate young women are kidnapped and forced into prostitution to service soldiers and mercenaries. Also living in the house is Angel (Rosie Day), a deaf mute girl orphaned by the conflict,...

In ten days, on January 26th, Dark Sky Film’s Frankenstein’S Army will be making its World Premiere at the Rotterdam International Film Festival. Tagging along with this sweet news, we have two new stills from the Richard Raaphorst film.
The first still features Machete Zombot in the corpse cooler, and the second shows Viktor (Karel Roden) in his lab, with a Machete Zombot standing watch.
Here’s the synopsis and cast:
Frankenstein’S Army takes place toward the end of World War II, as Russian soldiers push into eastern Germany and stumble across a secret Nazi lab, one that has unearthed and begun experimenting with the journal of one Dr. Viktor Frankenstein. The scientists have used the legendary Frankenstein’s work to assemble an army of super-soldiers stitched together from the body parts of their fallen comrades - a desperate Hitler’s last ghastly ploy to escape defeat.

Frankenstein’s Army has been on the march for so long you would think it was invading Russia. But no, it the Netherlands Frankenstein has his sights set on, specifically Rotterdam International Film Festival where it will make its world premiere.
A interesting concept. The army of pieced together super-soldiers combines an industrial-age aesthetic with nods to modern horror. See the Machete Zombot in the corpse cooler below, more stills here, and read the synopsis:

Since everyone loves Nazi Zombies as much as I do, I am thrilled to talk about two upcoming Nazi Zombie movies that look more than promising. Exciting is an understatement, even.
Today, Dark Sky Films released the first two official stills from Dutch director Richard Raaphorst’s Nazi Zombie horror film Frankenstein's Army.
This is someone called “Propellerhead”, described officially as "a hulking Nazi automaton that uses its spinning rotors to slice a bloody swath through the film’s terrified, lost Russian battalion."
And this is Doctor Frankenstein, as played by Karel Roden, dissecting someone unwilling to be dissected.
Like any good Nazi Zombie movie, Frankenstein's Army is set at the tail-end of World War II, when Russian soldiers accidentally find a secret Nazi laboratory as they enter Germany's eastern end. Back in September we learned that Darklands, the debut feature of director Julian Richards (The Last Horror Movie), will finally be released on November 20th; and a new clip from the occult shocker has arrived!
Richland says the clip was inspired by a pagan ritual he attended in Scotland whilst researching the screenplay. The event, known as The Beltane Fire, takes place in Edinburgh on April 30th, which is an important date in the pagan calender celebrating the coming of spring.
"Rituals such as Beltane (Walpurgis Night) and Samhain (Halloween) are based around the seasons and celebrate the success or failure of the harvest," explains Richards. "Records suggest that in the event of a bad harvest human sacrifices were made, but some historians believe this to be a myth propagated by Roman imperialists to portray themselves as a civilizing force."
Darklands presents a contemporary spin on these themes by setting the story in South Wales,...
