Tim Roth on 'Tin Star,' Tarantino and Tupac

Tim Roth on 'Tin Star,' Tarantino and Tupac
Skinheads, hit men, cops, criminals, cops-posing-as-criminals, princes, junkies, executioners, politicians, supervillains, an 18th-century fop, a 19th-century impressionist painter and a 21st-century psychotic chimp – you name it, and there's an extremely good chance that Tim Roth has played it. The 56-year-old British actor has the sort of varied, overstuffed resumé that suggests a reserved spot in the steadily-working-character-actor canon, and has not one but two projects hitting TV screens at the moment: Tin Star, an Amazon thriller that about an expat cop living in Canada that starts as a quirky fish-out-of-water

Flashback: 'The Ben Stiller Show' Turns 25! Why the Actor Laughed at Winning an Emmy for the Series

Flashback: 'The Ben Stiller Show' Turns 25! Why the Actor Laughed at Winning an Emmy for the Series
On Sept. 27, 1992, The Ben Stiller Show premiered on Fox, showcasing the titular star’s now well-known talent for emulating celebrities and crafting original characters. The sketch comedy series was abruptly canceled before its first season finished airing, but almost a year after it debuted, the show won an Emmy for Outstanding Writing in a Variety or Music Program.

“We had no idea,” Stiller told Et backstage at the 45th Primetime Emmy Awards. Apparently, none of the show’s writers had attended the ceremony with the notion they might beat out comedy institutions such as Saturday Night Live and Late Night with David Letterman. At some point leading up to the night, Stiller thought maybe he should put together a few words, just in case. “And then at the last minute, I thought, You know, I'm not gonna prepare a speech, because I'll feel like such a jerk when I don't win.”

Official Trailer for 'Brimstone & Glory' Doc About a Fireworks Festival

"Ecstatic ritual, danger and the absolute beauty of fireworks." Oscilloscope Labs has debuted an official trailer for a documentary titled Brimstone & Glory, profiling the glorious National Pyrotechnic Festival in Tultepec, Mexico. This 10-day festival of fireworks and pyrotechnics is unlike anything else, considering more than three quarters of Tultepec's residents work in pyrotechnics. The doc features a score by Beasts of the Southern Wild's Dan Romer & Benh Zeitlin, which actually makes me even more excited to see this (I love the unique sound of their music it always makes my heart race). This seems like one of the most spectacular, stunning docs about fireworks ever made. "For the people of Tultepec, the National Pyrotechnic Festival is explosive celebration, unrestrained delight and real peril." This looks totally amazing. Fire it up. Madison Avenue Predicts Football Viewership Will Drop Again This Year (Exclusive)

Madison Avenue Predicts Football Viewership Will Drop Again This Year (Exclusive)
With just a few weeks to go before the kickoff of football season, advertisers may be questioning whether primetime NFL games can still score as many marketing touchdowns as it has in the past.

A Variety survey of commercial-ratings projections for the 2017-18 broadcast-network TV season finds that ad buyers believe fewer people than last season will watch commercials during such primetime stalwarts as NBC’s “Sunday Night Football” and the “Thursday Night Football” broadcasts on both NBC and CBS. To be sure, the games remain TV’s top draw, with higher ratings expected for football than almost anything else on next season’s grid. But NFL games are proving just as vulnerable to audience erosion as their scripted counterparts. Advertisers’ commercial ratings predictions are culled by using estimates from three top media-buying agencies, which negotiate prices for and placement of billions of dollars in TV commercials each year.

Los Angeles-Based TV Pilot Production Slides 14% to Seven-Year Low

Television pilots shot in Los Angeles during the 2016-17 development cycle declined by 14% to 68 shows — a seven-year low — according to an annual survey by the film-permitting agency FilmL.A.

FilmL.A. president Paul Audley told Variety that the decline is due to the changing dynamics of the TV industry, with the streaming services Netflix and Amazon providing more programming that results in a lessening of the overall volume of pilot production.

“Despite this year’s smaller crop of pilots, Los Angeles’ television industry is robust,” Audley said. “With so many projects under way, California is home to more scripted series than its top five competitors combined.”

FilmL.A reported on Wednesday that an overall total of 173 broadcast, cable, and digital pilots (109 dramas, 64 comedies) were produced during the 2016-17 development cycle, while the previous three cycles saw 201, 202, and 203 pilots in each season. Of those 173 pilots, a total of 68 projects (22 dramas, 46 comedies) were filmed in the Los Angeles region
