Chadwick Boseman is on the cusp of making SAG Awards history with his final pair of films

Chadwick Boseman is on the cusp of making SAG Awards history with his final pair of films
Just like Beyonce and Jay-Z, four is the magic number for the Screen Actors Guild Awards this year. Nominations will be announced on Feb. 4 and the ceremony will be held on April 4 (which is also Bey and Jay’s wedding anniversary). And if our odds turn out to be correct, Chadwick Boseman will go into the record books as the first person to earn four nominations for film in a single year.

Boseman is in contention for the final two films of his too-short career, “Da 5 Bloods,” which came out two months before his death in August from colon cancer, and “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom,” which was released in December. He’s in first place in the lead actor odds for “Ma Rainey” and in third place in supporting for “Da 5 Bloods.” “Ma Rainey” and “Da 5 Bloods” are both expected to score ensemble nominations — the former is

Hulu New Releases: September 2020

Hulu New Releases: September 2020
As one of the weirder “back to school” seasons in living memory rolls out, Hulu is heading back to school in its own way for September 2020.

The biggest Hulu original arriving to the streaming services stream this month is season 2 of coming-of-age comedy Pen15…which of course stars two adults who have already come of age playing their middle school selves.

Speaking of middle school, perhaps the biggest non-original addition to the Hulu library this month is the arrival of all The Twilight Saga movies on September 1. That should prove to be a real nostalgia trip for interested parties. Other library titles of note include Harold and Kumar Go to White Castle, The Terminator, and 2019’s Judy on September 25.

Bookending Hulu’s originals this month is another intriguing comedy, Woke. This series will star Lamorne Morris as a Black cartoonist who gets an unexpected wakeup call.

How Playing ‘Complicated’ Characters Liberated Patricia Clarkson

How Playing ‘Complicated’ Characters Liberated Patricia Clarkson
Patricia Clarkson’s portrayals of complicated women “who aren’t 25” in indie films, pay-tv and streaming series, and on stage have offered her a rewarding second act to a career in which she once felt trapped in suburban mom roles.

Speaking to Variety’s chief film critic Peter Debruge as part of the magazine’s Critics Corner video interview series at the Karlovy Vary film fest, the actress said she was amazed to see Czech crowds thronging to her master class. “I thought there would be four people here,” Clarkson confessed.

The actress, at the fest to receive a Crystal Globe for artistic contribution to world cinema, said she feels the confidence to pick and choose her roles and even to take a break once in while, after decades of steady work – not all of it artistically rewarding.

The North Carolina native won a Daytime Emmy with her first major TV role on the soap opera “As the World Turns,” and a Golden Globe for one of her first big-screen performances, as part of an ensemble cast in Robert Altman’s “Short Cuts” (1993).

Her wide-ranging work has paired her with the likes of Paul Thomas Anderson, Alfonso Cuaron and the Coen brothers. She’s also had roles in the blockbuster “Jurassic Park” and “Hunger Games” franchises.

A five-time Academy Award nominee, she won her first Oscar for “Still Alice” (2014). Moore recently signed on to star in and executive produce the Apple series “Lisey’s Story,” from Stephen King and J.J. Abrams.

Emily Blunt is the 2nd performer to get double-snubbed by the Oscars after double SAG Awards nominations

Emily Blunt is the 2nd performer to get double-snubbed by the Oscars after double SAG Awards nominations
Poor Emily Blunt. After a stellar 2018 and earning Screen Actors Guild Awards nominations for “Mary Poppins Returns” and “A Quiet Place,” she failed to get an Oscar nomination Tuesday for either, becoming just the second double SAG nominee to go 0-2 with the academy.

Blunt follows in the dubious footsteps of Helen Mirren, who didn’t convert her SAG Awards bids for her 2015 films “Woman in Gold” and “Trumbo” into Oscar nominations. But at least Mirren was already a four-time Oscar nominee and a one-time winner; Blunt is still waiting for her maiden bid.

See Oscar nominations: Full list of nominees

The stats were on Blunt’s side. This was the 10th time a performer received two individual SAG Awards nominations. Besides Mirren, the other eight are:

1. Julianne Moore (1999): “The End of the Affair,” “Magnolia

2. Judi Dench (2001): “Iris,” “The Shipping News

3. Julianne Moore (2002): “Far From Heaven,” “The Hours

Patricia Clarkson Dedicates ‘Sharp Objects’ Golden Globe Win To Her Parents In New Orleans

With her Sharp Objects co-star, Amy Adams, wiping away tears in the audience, Patricia Clarkson delivered a characteristically classy acceptance speech after her Golden Globe win for Best Supporting Actress in a Series, Limited Series Or Movie Made for Television.

Showing her southern Gothic roots (at least geographically) that helped her memorably bring to life matriarch Adora Crellin, Clarkson got emotional as she moved beyond the obvious list of thank-yous “This really is for my extraordinary mother and father,” the New Orleans-area native said. “I share this with you, mom and dad, in New Orleans. Cheers.”

Clarkson, who also brought plenty of arch wit to the role, showed her dry humor as well during the minute-long speech. After telling Adams, “I owe you so very much,” she added a salute to director Jean-Marc Vallée. “You demanded everything of me except sex, which is

For Peter Hedges, the opioid epidemic hits close to home. “I lost a close friend to overdose,” he reveals. “My favorite actor ever overdosed and died, and my family nearly lost a close relative.” Though he knew he wanted to tackle the subject in a film, he “didn’t know what story to tell.” But after “a period of intense research that lasted several years” he finally arrived at the plot for “Ben is Back.” Watch our exclusive video interview with Hedges above.

Emily Blunt is the 10th performer to get double individual SAG Awards nominations in film

Patricia Clarkson (‘Sharp Objects’): Adora was ‘one of the most difficult characters I have ever played’ [Exclusive Video Interview]
“She’ll never leave me,” reveals Patricia Clarkson in our exclusive webcam interview (watch the video above) about how the character she brought to life in “Sharp Objects” still affects her to this day. “That’s who we are as actors, we all have certain characters that never leave us.”

In HBO’s acclaimed limited series, the two-time Emmy winner, Tony nominee and Oscar and Golden Globe nominee plays controlling matriarch Adora Crellin to daughters Camille (Amy Adams) and Amma (Eliza Scanlen). It was an especially challenging role for Clarkson, as the series confronts familial trauma and abuse and the difficult relationships between a damaged mother and her two very different daughters.

5 reasons why ‘Ben is Back’ will bring Julia Roberts back to the Oscars
Since becoming a mother in 2004, Julia Roberts has only starred in a handful of movies. This 2000 Best Actress Oscar winner (“Erin Brockovich”) has often opted for less time-consuming supporting roles or voice work. That she agreed to headline Peter Hedges‘ intense family drama “Ben is Back” tells you that the project is something special. Here are five reasons why her tour-de-force performance as a mother determined to keep her drug-addicted son from relapsing will bring her back to the Academy Awards.

1. She is getting some of the best reviews of her career

Hedges is a well-regarded filmmaker. He reaped an Oscar bid for his adaptation of Nick Hornsby‘s novel “About a Boy” and two Indie Spirit bids for his directorial debut “Pieces of April.” His new film scores an impressive 84 on Rotten Tomatoes, with that review aggregator calling it, “refreshingly understated as it subverts family drama stereotypes and provides
