Narrator: Year in, year out, all round our coasts, the beam of the lightship shines through the night and its siren pierces the fogbanks. Light and fog signal reach vessels of all nations equally and for three centuries, lighthouses and lightships were considered international. Three hundred years of warfare left them untouched. from the day when Louis XIV told his navy "I am at war with England but not with Humanity." From that day until the 29th of January 1940.

Men Against The Sea And Sky
The men aboard a lightship off East Dudgeon has to deal with floating mines, and then an attack by German planes. With the ship sinking, the men abandon the ship and start to row 25 miles to shore.

For centuries, lightships were not considered military targets. Because they served no offensive purpose, they were left alone; as a French king remarked, "I am at war with England, not humanity." However, in February of 1940, a German plane attacked the lighthouse off East Dudgeon and forced the crew to abandon. Only one man survived.

This movie offers a compelling tale of what happened.
