Emmys 2018: Show Business as Usual

Emmys 2018: Show Business as Usual
When the 2018 Emmy nominations were announced, it seemed like the comedy categories were far more interesting than the drama ones. And when it came time to guess the winners, I again assumed things would be wilder on the comedy side, while the drama awards would either re-coronate Game of Thrones or continue last year’s Handmaid’s Tale steamroller.

Game of Thrones did win Outstanding Drama Series last night, along with Peter Dinklage’s third Emmy for playing Tyrion Lannister, but for the most part my prognostication was exactly backwards.

Shows like “The Wire” and films like “The Departed” ask viewers to root for misanthropic men whose criminal careers are either on the downswing or in the not-too-distant past. In “Jessica Forever,” a French Tiff premiere from directors Caroline Poggi and Jonathan Vinel, a band of lost boys vie for audience sympathy.

Cynthia Erivo will play Harriet Tubman

by Murtada Elfadl

Cynthia Erivo who made waves this week at Tiff as one quarter of Widows has announced her next project. She will play iconic freedom fighter Harriet Tubman in Harriet. The film will follow Tubman on her escape from slavery and subsequent missions to free many slaves through the Underground Railroad in pre-Civil War America. More exciting is that Harriet will be directed by Kasi Lemmons of Eve’s Bayou (1997), a film we adore. This will be Lemmons' first film since Black Nativity (2013), in the past few years she’s been directing episodes of TV shows like Luke Cage and Shots Fired.

Joining Erivo in the cast are Leslie Odom Jr., Joe Alwyn, Clarke Peters (Detective Freamon in The Wire) and surprisingly country music singer Jennifer Nettles.

Kit Harington Says "Not Everyone's Going to Be Happy" With the Game of Thrones Series Finale

Kit Harington Says
You can't please everybody. At least Kit Harington knows that well before the Game of Thrones series finale airs. Harington, who has filmed the last season of Game of Thrones already and knows how the series ends, hinted it will be a divisive finale. "I think a TV series that's spanned eight, nine years is an incredibly difficult thing to end," Harington told MTV at Tiff. "I think not everyone's going to be happy, you know, and you can't please everyone. My favorite TV shows are Sopranos, Breaking Bad, and The Wire, and they all ended in a way that…It's never going to satisfy you." And they say Jon Snow knows nothing... ‘The Deuce’ Creator Slams Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey as ‘F—bonnet for Our Time’

‘The Deuce’ Creator Slams Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey as ‘F—bonnet for Our Time’
David Simon isn’t done with Jack Dorsey just yet. “The Deuce” creator sounded off on Twitter’s chief exec on Wednesday, calling Dorsey a “f—bonnet for our time” in a lengthy, acid-tongued blog post.

Simon is still riled up after being slapped with a two-week suspension earlier this year for saying Dorsey should “die of boils” — and believes Twitter’s handling of his account crystallizes the platform’s love of censorship. Simon said Dorsey’s “s–itsquib, basement-dwelling minions” pressured him to delete his “boils” tweet, and when Simon refused, decided to stealthily remove the tweet for him.

“That’s right, you took it down yourself, quietly, secretly — and all the while kept pretending that until I did so you couldn’t possibly return me to your platform,” Simon wrote. “You gutless, cheese-eating, back-dooring f—bonnet.”

‘Game of Thrones’: Kit Harington Evokes ‘Sopranos’ and ‘Breaking Bad’ Endings While Teasing Divisive Series Finale
Kit Harington is already starting to wave the warning flags about the “Game of Thrones” series finale. During the press rounds at the Toronto International Film Festival in support of his role in Xavier Dolan’s “The Death and Life of John F. Donovan,” Harington was asked about the final run of “Thrones ” episodes, to which he guaranteed not every fan will be satisfied with the story’s conclusion.

“I think a TV series that’s spanned eight, nine years is an incredibly difficult thing to end,” Harington said. “I think not everyone’s going to be happy, you know, and you can’t please everyone. My favorite TV shows are ‘Sopranos,’ ‘Breaking Bad,’ and ‘The Wire,’ and they all ended in a way that…It’s never going to satisfy you.”

BBC Doubles Order Of Philip Pullman Fantasy Adaptation ‘His Dark Materials’
Exclusive: The BBC has doubled the order of its adaptation of Philip Pullman’s His Dark Materials ahead of its debut.

Deadline understands that the Bad Wolf and New Line production has already been handed a second, eight-part season. Filming kicked off earlier this month in Cardiff at Wolf Studios Wales for season one of the drama, which is thought to be one of the most expensive British scripted series to date.

The series stars James McAvoy, Dafne Keen, Ruth Wilson and Lin-Manuel Miranda, is written by Jack Thorne and directed by Tom Hooper.

In March, Deadline revealed that Logan star signed up to play main character Lyra, an orphan, who lives in a parallel universe, alongside Hamilton creator Lin-Manuel Miranda, who plays adventurer Lee Scoresby. McAvoy plays Lord Asriel, father of Lyra, while The Wire’s Clarke Peters, who recently starred in Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri, plays the master who raises Lyra.
