In 2012, Disney bought Lucasfilm Ltd. and decided to make a new trilogy of Star Wars movies and an anthology series of spin-off movies and that the Star Wars films would ignore the expanded universe and the events that took place after Star Wars: Episode VI - Return of the Jedi (1983) in the video games, comic books, novels etc.
In the expanded universe, Mara Jade was an agent and assassin of Emperor Palpatine whom served him loyally. After Darth Vader killed Emperor Palpatine during the Battle of Endor. Mara Jade wanted revenge on Luke Skywalker whom she blamed for the death of the Emperor. But, Mara never succeeded and instead fell in love with them and later married and she became a Jedi master. However, Star Wars: The Force Awakens (2015) and Star Wars: The Last Jedi (2017) ignored the events of the expanded universe that took place after Star Wars: Episode VI - Return of the Jedi (1983) depicted in video games, comic books and novels etc. and in the new trilogy, Luke Skywalker never married Mara Jade.
