The wanted criminal Riddick arrives on a planet called Helion Prime, and finds himself up against an invading empire called the Necromongers, an army that plans to convert or kill all humans in the universe.
Left for dead on a sun-scorched planet, Riddick finds himself up against an alien race of predators. Activating an emergency beacon alerts two ships: one carrying a new breed of mercenary, the other captained by a man from Riddick's past.
Veteran-turned-mercenary Toorop takes the high-risk job of escorting a woman from Russia to America. Little does he know that she is host to an organism that a cult wants to harvest in order to produce a genetically modified Messiah.

Originally "Rated R for violence" as was the first film Pitch Black (2000), this film was envisioned as a PG-13 rated film. Universal appealed the original R-rating, but was not successful. The film was later edited down from the R and was given a "PG-13 for intense sequences of violent action and some language". An unrated version, with more violence and language was later released. When Kyra removes the cup that Riddick used to kill a guard on Crematoria, the cup has a badly broken and jagged rim and its handle is attached about an inch below the rim. In the next shot where the cup is completely visible, the cup's rim is less broken and jagged and its handle is attached at least two inches below the rim. The cup she places on the rock appears the same as it did when she first picked it up. See more »

The theatrical release was edited to achieve an MPAA Rating of "PG-13" instead of "R". The Unrated Director's Cut on DVD restores the violent scenes and adds more character development (including the addition of a character that was not seen in the theatrical release). See more »
what the hell ???? I've heard and read about so many people bitching and moaning at how much they dislike this movie as compared to pitch black, but honestly i think this one is fantastic (although undeniably pitch black was much better).
Its basically the character Riddick from the pitch black movie in his own adventure fighting monsters , avoiding authorities and escaping a prison . in a nutshell thats what it is and thats what you get . people complained that this one strives too far from the feeling that the original pitch black gave us , but thats not necessarily a bad thing is it ? its a new take on an expanded universe created for the soul purpose of telling the story of this character.
If you love pitch black then there's no reason you shouldn't lover this one. I feel it necessary to say that Vin Diesel being nominated for worst actor in this movie is scandalous. Top film bad critics - end of story!
