At one point in the film, Paul (Robert De Niro) asks Raoul (Reg Rogers) what his directing background is, to which he answers, "theater mostly". In three episodes of Friends (1994), Reg Rogers played a theater director, and was a very similar character.

When Paul (Robert De Niro) gets to reunite with his friends and tell them he's out of the mob business, one of them reminds him about some of his greatest crimes. He says, "Remember the strike on Air France? People are still talking about that!" This is a nod to De Niro's role as Jimmy Conway in Goodfellas (1990), in which Conway was part of a gang that stole millions from an Air France terminal.

When Dr. Sobel (Billy Crystal) discovers that his son is working for Paul Vitti (Robert De Niro) as his driver, at one point he yells at him "Move out, Clemenza!" This is a nod to The Godfather: Part II (1974), in which Robert De Niro played a young Vito Corleone, and met with a young Clemenza and become friends.

During the sequence where Dr. Sobel (Billy Crystal) tests Paul Vitti's (Robert De Niro) catatonic state, he makes a lot of noises and gestures to make Paul laugh in order to expose his catatonia as fake, which, of course, never happens. De Niro stated in an interview that it was really difficult for him to stay emotionless while Crystal was doing all those funny faces and sounds.
