This here is the second of three films that were made by James and Eloyce Gist. The Gist family were religious people who in 1930 made HELLBOUND TRAIN and would show it at black churches around the country in order to get money. They were basically a traveling church group and this here was the second picture. This one here wasn't nearly as ambitious as the first but the story is pretty basic. There's a trial of some sort going on where an angel is defending Christians while a Devil creature is defending the bad.
VERDICT NOT GUILTY is another really bad movie. You know, I understand people saying that this was just meant to be shown in a church or that the Gist weren't filmmakers but instead church people trying to teach right from wrong. That might be true but this is still a pretty darn bad movie on many levels. The storytelling is extremely bad and it's clear after watching this and their first film that they just weren't filmmakers. I think there was an interesting idea trying to be done here but without the talent to pull it off we're just left with a rather bad film.
