One of Mozart's Very Best Delivers In A Splendid Production
14 March 2013 | by See all my reviews

Too frequently, Don Giovanni productions are either dully stuck hidebound in tradition or immersed so far in some gimcrack novelty conception they leave divine music of the incredibly versatile Mozart behind; this version stands, I think, as a well-balanced ideal production, giving us a full-blooded lusty Don in Bryn Terfel, backed up with an able cast and strong conducting from James Levine.

Visually, too, this one's a treat, with traditional but not cardboard settings, moving along from scene to scene with a commendable sense of pace and inevitability towards the revenge taken by the Commandatore as he descends into Hell taking along the flippant hand of his victim

Don Giovanni is also a frequently funny opera, and the lines and gestures of a sophisticated cast with knowing timing delivers each character with a sense of purpose and surety; what really makes this production work is its evident sense of ensemble--including the inimitable silk-smooth Renee Fleming in fine vocal splendor. This is a keeper for your opera library!
