Twisted Genius
slugnutty28 August 2006
"Let's Bowl" started out on local television in the Twin Cities. It came on late at night, something you'd stumble across while channel surfing after your 7th bottle of Hamm's.

Even the ads were locally produced, featuring Wally outside Grumpy's Bar, holding a microphone and stammering nervously -- "Ahh...over to you, Steve Sedahl." Not sure why, but that one always made me laugh.

There was a bowling contest featured under the guise of settling a dispute between two bowlers, but the game was secondary to the commentary and clips. Sedahl played it straight, counter-balanced by Rich Kronfeld's bizarre and hilarious "Wally Hotvedt." Highlights included segments like "How to Properly Dispose of an Old Bowling Ball" (chuck them into a lake) and "Tips on Dating," where the duo "date" a couple of hookers and Wally ends with the bitter complaint, "I could have done that myself!"

Another segment -- what the duo did on their days off -- featured Steve in beer can strewn hovel, pigging out from the fridge while Wally struggled to climb the cliffs at Taylor's Falls, dressed in his tight pale blue blazer and over-sized headphones. Hilarious!

Wally's awestruck comments about "league bowlers," and his struggle to apply the correct euphemism to various splits were also highlights.

"Let's Bowl" was picked up by Comedy Central and had some good moments, but the network never really knew what to do with it, running it during prime time and emphasizing the bowling "competition," which was never the point of the show. The constant commercials interrupted the flow and the side characters (Ernie, the Pig, Butch, etc.) were more distractions than anything else. The whole thing seemed rushed and kind of forced. Even Jon Stewart dissed Let's Bowl on the Daily Show -- (not enough lame, snide jokes?) -- an ignominious treatment for a show that deserved far better.

How often does a "Let's Bowl" come along in the world of modern television, a locally flavored mix of comedic genius and total crap? The networks have the "total crap" part down cold, but it's a sad thing to watch them kill such a dark, strange, funny little gem like "Let's Bowl."

Here's hoping they'll put it out on DVD.

You'll either get it, or you won't...

This nutty show from the same state that gave us the all-time classic MST3K and the Coen Brothers is one of those rare things that you'll either "get" immediately, or you won't (and no amount of lecturing from the converted will ever change your mind). Personally, I just about fell off the sofa when Wally gave the "Inside Bowling" tips on how to mentally psych out your rival, including baseball bat and stick figure diagram noting "possible witness."

With bowling lifestyle references that aren't much of an exaggeration (cheap-o bowling lounges, drinking, and prostitutes) and prizes of used snowmobiles and meat, "Let's Bowl" creates a hilariously insane "one bubble off" universe. It's an original!

Groundbreakingly hilarious

Over the last two decades, there have basically been 4 comedies that truly redefined the genre. One was The Simpsons. One was Mystery Science Theater 3000. One was Mr. Show with Bob and David. This is the forth.

No show has ever teased the reality/competitive genre like this show while, in the process, bringing a cheesy nostalgic aspect and a cutting edge comedic wit. Creator Tim Scott is a former Mystery Science Theater staffer who has certainly continued the tradition begun by Joel Hodgson. This show represents everything that television could be and should be.

Oh yeah, and bowling is just cool.

Hilarity thy name is Let's Bowl. You don't have to be an Olympic athlete to enjoy the side splitting antics on America's number 1 indoor bowling show, but it helps. Who doesn't love to bowl? Let's bowl is a riot, and charming as hell. Old school bowling in an old school lane, none of that high falutin wide world of sports nonsense. These are real Minnesotans, locking horns on the parquet floors, and bowling for vengeance and great prizes. I love Let's Bowl and you will too!

Are you kidding? This show is hilarious!!

This show is one of the funnier things that Comedy Central has ever done, and is an integral part of Sunday night's triple threat of The Man Show, Let's Bowl and South Park. Pay close attention to Wally's dialogue- those are the best parts and Wally is one of the funniest charcters on TV right now. No matter whether you like bowling or not- this show is great and I recommend it whole-heartedly.

I disagree with those who bash Let's Bowl. That show, though it ran only for one season, will forever rank as one of my favorite things...EVER! It was such a mockery! Wally and Chopper were hilarious hosts and what was up with that pig anyway? Ridiculous, one of the funniest things on TV. Watching Insomniac and Let's Bowl back-to-back was bliss. If any of you are into that Extreme Japanese Challenge thing that Spike TV plays, you'll LOVE Let's Bowl. May it rest in peace (alongside Sifl & Olly and The State).

I can't put my finger on it, whether it's the matching suits that the commentators wear, the 50's-style theme song, or just the sheer absurdity of the show, I can't stop watching! I'm planning a trip to Minnesota just so I can be in the audience! I'm trying to think of people I can have small disputes with so I can be on the show! I am hooked on this show, and I can only hope that one day there will be enough episodes for Comedy Central to run a marathon.

Finally -- a funny bowling show!

Thank God someone finally spoofed the world of small-time bowling! This show is great -- the running commentary by Chopper and Wally is hysterical and where do they get these contestants? If you ever want to spend a half hour listening to hilarious chatter, tune in to this show. I wish there were more shows like it. Sign me up for an alley and give this Tim Scott guy more shows!

Something funny on Comedy Central?

Man, finally something that is actually funny and engaging.

After the horrifying "That's My Bush!" and absolutely boring "Chris Wylde Show", I had assumed that CC exec's must have sniffed enough glue to stick every midget in existence to I-beams.

Now, this isn't the best show ever. I just dig the cheesy-ass production and "prizes".

dark and edgy, and still funny

A wholesome bowling competition with themes of sausage and polka music serves as a front for a very strange comedy show.

Wally Hotvedt is a man broken by failed relationships, and he finds creative and disgusting ways to spiral into depression.

Chopper is his announcing partner, who is well-loved, friendly, but often cruel when it comes to taking advantage of people.

The Queen Pins--unlike their showgirl counterparts on other game shows such as the famous Barker's Beauties on the Price is Right--take to taunting the contestants rather than encouraging them.

Ernie Jansen is the straight man of the group, leading the music section which includes a rotating cast of oddball acts such as Manplanet and the World's Most Dangerous Polka Band.

The skits are always humorously disturbing, and not just shocking for the sake of stirring up controversy (like many FOX programs). Of course, with a show that skews reality like this some people will just be confused.

Cheeseball humor with undercurrent of mental problems = good times

The premise is OK, but Comedy Central knows it cannot sell this show only on premise. The key to this show is Wally. Wally's habits, vices, and mannerisms are hilarious and this show is clearly the outlet for them. Wally is an ex-con loser with an affinity for cheap whores and cheap booze. Chopper isn't exactly bland either, although he responds to most of Wally's more extreme comments with a "what?"

Show highlights are the prizes (trips to various Minnesota third and fourth rate vacation destinations, scratch-n-dent furniture and crummy old cars), Inside Bowling (classic segments include the trip to the bowling shoe factory and how to date women), and In the Pin where Wally is locked up with each contestant. I find this show to be very enjoyable.

Let's Bowl is insanely funny!

It may not be everyone's cup of tea, but it's worth checking out. The wonderful cheesy, twisted humor is a welcome break from shows who takes themselves way to seriously. How can you not love a game show that gives out 22 pounds of herring as a prize or the infamous "skull bowling ball"? If nothing else, one of the shows commentators, Wally makes this a show you have to watch!

Very weird. Very funny!

This is what Comedy Central should be showing, rather than endless repeats of cancelled shows. A crazy take on the quirky residents of Minnesota, like "Fargo" mixed with "Mystery Science Theater 3000" and Chris Elliot/Ben Stiller style humor. I loved it when it was on local stations, and I love it now on Comedy Central.

One of the best I've ever seen!

I must've been insane not to tune into this show the second it premiered. This is exactly the kind of comedy I love. Silly, disturbing, and trying way too hard! It's just as "good" ;) as Late Night with Conan O'Brien and Monty Python's Flying Circus. To anyone who's a fan of that sort of comedy, I *highly* recommend this television show. Comedy Central better hang on to this kid for a long, long time.

The best new show on Comedy Central
The Big Whadoo17 November 2001
Finally, a show that laughs at reality TV. People settle disputes by bowling, and they have a chance to win prizes like old Chargers and Minnesota lodge vacations. Polka bands replace loud power-chord synth, and the necessary vixens are replaced by the Queen Pins, the clumsy and average-looking Vanna Whites that flank the sides of the lane. The hosts of the show take the action about as serious as a fake heart attack. Usually about half way through the show, one of the hosts takes sides with one of the contestants. This show is a lot like Survivor, only people are supposed to take Survivor seriously.

Why God Why?

I accidently flipped this on, and my clicker actually commit suicide five seconds later. I would rather spend "quality time" with Michael Jackson then ever have this on my TV again, even if my TV's off. With this "Battle Bots" and the "Chris Wylde Show" Comedy Central has hit a new low. This stuff is almost as bad as something on MTV. Bring back Dr. Katz, or show some British Comedies. Crimminy!

Stupidity personified
big pee wee3 September 2001
When is Comedy Central going to learn that these stupid theme game shows DO NOT WORK. We had "Make me Laugh" and "VS.", both which lasted about a week. This one falls right in line with those turds.

I saw the first show and, I was left to wonder how can they make this last over several more episodes. The show was unfunny to start with, but I thought they took the bowling comedy about as far as anyone could take it(maybe i'm wrong).

If somebody from Comedy Central reads this, maybe put "Upright Citizens Brigade" back on. This show is not too good.
