1987 was an exceedingly awesome year for kid-centric horror movies. In the span of just a few months, we were treated to both Tibor Takács’ The Gate and Fred Dekker’s The Monster Squad, and honestly, there may have not been a better year to be a young genre fan during that decade than in good ol’ 1987. And while there were an incredible amount of quality horror movies for this writer to dig into from that 12-month span of releases, one movie that I always had a deep appreciation for was The Gate, a story that I related to on numerous levels, even if I never happened to summon a horde of demons from digging a hole in my backyard.
An ambitious and good-hearted modern fairy tale that bluntly examined the universal horrors of growing up—both literally and figuratively—The Gate is an admirable genre debut from Takács, who had previously worked in Canadian television,...

After a promising initial line-up, the Toronto International Film Festival has delivered more titles with their full Canadian slate. Among the line-up is Xavier Dolan‘s It’s Only the End of the World, Bruce MacDonald‘s new feature Weirdos, Deepa Mehta‘s Anatomy of Violence, as well as Two Lovers and a Bear, starring Tatiana Maslany and Dane DeHaan, which we have the first trailer for today.
We said in our review from Cannes, “Kim Nguyen’s Two Lovers and a Bear is a film that suffers from a bit of an identity crisis. Like an indie playlist stuck on constant shuffle, unapologetically reveling in a sort of manic unclassifiable genre. This isn’t always necessarily a bad thing, but, for some reason, Nguyen’s scattershot tonal shifts — which hop between a romance on the rocks; a self-serious study of grieving; and a surreal buddy comedy — can prove quite jarring.

Dane Dehaan (Valerian And The City of A Thousand Planets) and Tatiana Maslany ("Orphan Black") play two young tormented souls who are living in a small community of about two-hundred people near the North Pole, where the weather is consistently minus fifty and the roads lead to endless white. Amidst this eerie landscape, Lucy and Roman manage to fall in love, but when Lucy's past demons come back to haunt her, they must travel into the Great White in order to escape their pasts, make a leap for love, and to be alive.

The success of Tusk has opened the door to getting Clerks III made, Kevin Smith has revealed.
With his new horror movie Tusk now in Us cinemas, and with him already hard at work on the second part of what's known as his Great North Trilogy, Kevin Smith is a busy man. Yoga Hosers is his next film, but after that, it looks as if the pieces have finally fallen into place for Clerks III.
On the latest episode of his Hollywood Babble-On podcast, Smith revealed that "Tusk was the absolute bridge to Clerks III", and that "because of Tusk, I got my financing for Clerks III".
Smith revealed that he'd been trying to get Clerks III made in time for the 20th anniversary of the first film, but had failed to find the funding to do so. After Tusk, people were "going holy fuck, what else do you have?...

Wilt by Tom Sharpe
There are a lot of definitions of comedy floating around out there. My personal favorite is the theory of "bad to worse." There's something about watching someone go from bad to worse, but still bring cheerful, even upbeat about it, that just cracks me up. It certainly works in Curb Your Enthusiasm, the reigning heavyweight champ. You'll also see it on The Simpsons. Family Guy, ditto. The hell with the three-act, Robert McKee, story-structure hoo-haa. Instead of getting someone up a tree, throwing sticks at him, and getting him back down again, in comedy, for me, it's just about throwing sticks at him. Then trees. Then the whole frickin' Great North Woods. You get the idea.

On April 6, 1909 Admiral Robert Peary and his team became the first men to reach the geographic North Pole. To celebrate the centennial anniversary of this remarkable expedition, Sebastian Copeland—a noted explorer, filmmaker, photographer, and environmental advocate—led his own, smaller expedition to this landmark locale. And while the advance of technology in the last 100 years has made this journey somewhat easier, the declining environment has created very different obstacles for Copeland that Peary did not face.
Part celebration of exploration and part PSA on the declining environment of the Great North, Into the Cold is an adventure documentary for the masses.

Where would a horror movie be without a classic death scene – or two? We’ve had some great ones over the years: Janet Leigh’s shower to end all showers in Psycho (1960); the ill fated nude swim in Jaws (1975); David Warner’s famous decapitation in The Omen (1976); John Hurt’s serious indigestion problem in Alien (1979); and the exploding head in Scanners (1980). And let’s not forget the gruesome ends that befell pre-stardom Kevin Bacon and Johnny Depp.
Hang on a minute! I’ve just mentioned all the classic ones! Well let’s face it, so much has been written and discussed about those famous demises, they’ve been pretty much done to death (sorry!). Therefore, the following ten are horror-related deaths that deserve some kind of classic status, a couple of which are notable for their surreal and ambiguous nature. But beware...since most of the best death scenes are...

Turner Prizewinner Douglas Gordon shoots his first film in England, bringing work as well as carefully-managed arson to a Cumbrian nook. Alan Sykes looks on admiringly
Talkin Head is normally an extraordinarily quiet place – an isolated Cumbrian hill farm in a wooded valley nestled in the fells looking southwards towards the Lake District hills. The loudest noise you normally hear is the call of the curlews or the mewing of buzzards overhead. Last night, however, the farm was overrun with activity, with over 30 people – cameramen, special effects specialists, firefighters, sound operatives, producers, arts commissioners, runners, a gardener, security people and assorted hangers on – from 10 different countries from Chile to Denmark (and many from Scotland) beavering away up the fellside prior to filming from an hour or so before sunset until an hour afterwards.

Boasting a kinetic and visually-adventurous filmmaker, a battle-tested and diverse action star and a supporting cast equal parts testosterone and heartbreaking vulnerability, not to mention its stripped-down, man vs. nature plot, The Grey promises a lot. That it doesn’t quite make good on its promise demonstrates the strange state movies are in right now. Half actioner, half drama, Carnahan’s film reflects a time for cinema in which we expect to know everything about the movie we are seeing before we see it. Trying to go against the grain here might severely hurt The Grey‘s commercial chances after the first weekend.
With a star like Liam Neeson and its Taken-mimicking release date (not to mention it’s deceiving marketing campaign), writer/director Joe Carnahan‘s film appears to be an action extravaganza, much like Unknown was last year. This time around, the film in question is not what is hinted at.

Even though the legal age to drink alcohol in most of Canada is 19, Selena Gomez says she stands be her decision to wait until she’s 21! She’s still a Disney star at heart…
Despite being one of the most powerful young celebs in Hollywood, Selena Gomez is still adhering to American rules…even in Canada! During an interview with Kiss 92.5 in Toronto, the 19-year-old performer was quick to respond when asked if she had tried alcohol, since she’s legally allowed to drink in the Great North.
“No! No. I’m American, so I still have to apply to that,” Selena said, smiling.
We’re pretty sure most American teenagers in another country would be excited to drink, but Selena is an exception. She’s always aware of her younger fans and doesn’t ever want to do anything that would disappoint them.

There's one aspect of Friday's (April 29) royal wedding we haven't seen covered adequately: could the Prince William, Kate Middleton, Queen Elizabeth and the rest of the wedding party survive a zombie attack? And what can attendees do to help?
Thanks to the smarties at ology.com, the royal family will be well equipped with plenty of undead-thwarting tips to make sure the undead don't spoil (he he) Kate and Wills' nuptials.
Suggestions for a zombie-infested Westminster Abbey include:
Control the flow: "Should the general guests begin abrupt transformations into flesh-hungry terrors, your best bet is to force the horde back through the doors and hold at the Great North Door."
Spare no one: "You might assume that merely disabling infected members of the royal family will be in some way beneficial to the Crown, should a cure be discovered. You might think there's no sense offing dukes and duchesses when...

Can you imagine American celebrities announcing what time they will leave and arrive, which entrance will be used, and where the bride will be staying the night before the ceremony? I understand this is an internationally televised wedding on an entirely different scale, but I still find it fascinating (and optimistic). Below is the schedule, copied and pasted with local times. The marriage service will being at 6 a.m. Et, the carriage procession of the bride and...

Prepare the screen grab for 1:25 p.m. London time - or 8:25 a.m. Est and 5:25 a.m. on the West Coast - come April 29's big day. That's when Kate Middleton and Prince William, surrounded by their immediate families, are officially scheduled on the balcony of Buckingham Palace and expected to kiss - just as the groom's parents, Prince Charles and Princess Diana, did 30 years ago. They will then watch the spectacle of a Royal Air Force flyover, the palace confirmed Friday. As for the official, to-the-minute "ceremonial timings" on the big day (all London time):...

July is tomorrow, and that means there's a great big national birthday coming up. That's right: Canada Day. Yes, I know you Americans are saying "Hey, we have a national birthday coming up, too," but you know what? July isn't just about you, Americans. Surely you can get over yourself long enough to give a little love to the other resident of the Great North American Duplex -- as I like to call it -- the nice neighbor, the one who doesn't play its music until 3 a.m. every morning or leave junk lying around on your mutual lawn. Show a little appreciation, man. This is particularly the case in science-fiction film: there are a lot of topflight sci-fi directors, stars, and other filmmakers that many of you may have just simply assumed were Americans, because, well, that's how we are, isn't it? But, in fact, the Great White North...
Ridley Scott claims his new film starring Russell Crowe will be the most historically accurate ever. But what do we actually know about the real outlaw and his merrie men?
In pictures: men in tights from Errol Flynn to Russell Crowe
'Robin Hood was almost certainly a pedestrian," David Crook, the retired former assistant keeper of public records at the Public Record Office, tells me over tea one afternoon at his home in Grantham. Robin, in other words, had no horse. This is significant, because, as I settle down to try to unravel the eight centuries of myth and legend that have accreted around the outlaw, I am looking at a still from the new Ridley Scott movie, which will open the Cannes film festival on 12 May. Russell Crowe – looking the spit of Maximus, the hero of Gladiator, with cropped hair, bloodied cheek and an expression of furious determination – is astride a horse.

EastEnders star Steve McFadden has lost two stone after taking up swimming, according to a report. The actor has been relying on the sport for less than a year after deciding that he wanted to slim down, The Sun claims. The challenge will see him swimming in Lake Windermere in order to raise money for the Rnli. "To take part in the Great North Swim and help the Rnli is a privilege for me," the 50-year-old explained. A Newcastle man has earned the title of Great North Bum for his slovenly dog walking technique. Kevin Pyle, 35, exercises his bull mastiff Bruce from the comfort of his own car, holding a lead attached to the animal out of the window as it is slowly driven around the block. The Daily Telegraph reports that Pyle, of Fenham, was nominated for the title by his 18-year-old son Karl. He said: "My dad is the laziest person I know. When he gets in from work he has a bath and goes straight to bed. He just lies there and watches (more)...
