Like the debonair dandy he is, Max hastens off just before one o'clock to keep his engagements. Louisa he greets with affection; in fact, he kisses her, and Louisa is annoyed. She slaps his face, and walks away. Max's second engagement being so close upon the first, it is not surprising that his face should still be puckered into a rueful grimace, as the result of this slap, when he meets Emily. Now, Emily wants to be kissed, and she tells him to kiss her. Max refuses, on account of his recent lesson, and receives a second slap. Joan appears in view. Seeing him with a lady, Joan immediately vents her indignation in a third slap. Max takes to his heels, meets Alice, and fairly bolts down a long road, as he asks himself, "Whatever is a man to do to please a woman?"
