    Max en convalescence review

Max Linder does battle with a horse and comes off second best in this amiable short comedy. Most of the laughs come from Linder's impeccable reactions to various assaults from the horse, some of which looks genuinely dangerous.

We are glad to have him back again

Moving picturedom has missed Max Linder, that genial comedian of the French Pathe Company. He has been very sick. This little comedy, so the first leader says, was enacted by him, with his father, mother and sister, to reassure his old friends, the patrons of moving pictures. We are glad to have him back again. There is no one else who is Max. The picture is a joy forever, and hearty laugh followed hearty laugh throughout the film. Not only is this comedy, which has no definite situation, full of amusement in its whimsical turns and unexpected happenings; but its views of a country place are lovely. There is a very humorous dog in it, and a very amusing trick pony. It is a first class picture. Good health to Max. May he give us many more pictures. - The Moving Picture World, May 25, 1912

    A Lovely little film!

The other reviews can fill in context - I was simply happy to find a very nice 1080p full HD restoration of this film on YouTube with a lovely and very fitting piano score. It is clearly played to the film in the traditional way, as we can hear appropriate sound cues when some significant action occurs. I would probably find this too slow and boring with no music, but the wonderful accompaniment makes this into a truly lovely relaxing experience - the scenery is beautiful, well shot, the actors good, both human and animal. The nice dog's part is sweet, and the horse's part funny. I still don't know how they train animals to do such things, but I am certainly impressed!

Shake Hooves With Your Uncle Max, My Pony Boy

A tired-looking Max Linder is glad to get home; it must be a strenuous life, being a boulevardier in Paris. The family is glad to see him, and so is the dog, but the pony isn't. The darned beast keeps attacking him.

Max Linder was the first major international comedy star and this is a pleasant change of pace for his character. As with all families, no one takes him very seriously, particularly the trick pony who is his nemesis in this short, a clever little animal. Marcelle Leuvielle, whose only known screen appearance this is, is a fetching young woman who spends much of her time laughing at Max' discomfiture.

    Pony star

Again a short Max Linder with no romance and no direct slapstick by ML, the real star here being a truculent pony doing silly stupidities to bother Max. Fortunately, there is a wonderful dog to help Max. Very entertaining.
