Finding ‘Whitney’: Meet Nicole David, the Fairy Godmother Who Never Gave Up on Her Troubled Superstar

Finding ‘Whitney’: Meet Nicole David, the Fairy Godmother Who Never Gave Up on Her Troubled Superstar
Nicole David is why Kevin Macdonald made “Whitney.” As an agent at William Morris, David represented Whitney Houston for almost 30 years, even before her first album came out in 1985 at age 22. She stood by her through 200 million album sales worldwide, movie stardom, husband Bobby Brown, and struggles with drugs, right up to her death at age 48 in 2012 from a lethal combination of drugs and alcohol. Even so, for David Houston remained a mystery.

“I always had a feeling there was something more, a reason why,” David said. “No matter what I tried and other people tried, nothing seemed to work. I just couldn’t understand it for years; it made me so angry at everybody. Why didn’t this girl want to get better? It wasn’t as simple as she liked being stoned. That’s never the issue.”

In 2012, veteran “Oprah” producer Lisa Erspamer approached David about doing a documentary on the singer.

‘Show Dogs’ Distributor Will Edit Out Sexploitation Scenes That Angered Parents and Victim Advocates
Five days after “Show Dogs” opened as family-friendly fare in more than 3,200 theaters, distributor Global Road Entertainment announced that it will cut footage that — to parents and advocates — suggests sexual abuse. The Aussie theater chain Cineplex Australia had recently dropped the film from its lineup.

The company released the following statement to Deadline:

Responding to concerns raised by moviegoers and some specific organizations, Global Road Entertainment has decided to remove two scenes from the film ‘Show Dogs’ that some have deemed not appropriate for children. The company takes these matters very seriously and remains committed to providing quality entertainment for the intended audiences based on the film’s rating. We apologize to anybody who feels the original version of ‘Show Dogs’ sent an inappropriate message. The revised version of the film will be available for viewing nationwide starting this weekend.

Show Dogs movie review: everything is awful

MaryAnn’s quick take… Embarrassingly bad CGI; pratfalls; genital humor; denigration of cat ladies; horrible clichés and stereotypes. This is the cinematic equivalent of stepping in dog poop. You know, for kids! I’m “biast” (pro): nothing

I’m “biast” (con): nothing

(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto) women’s participation in this film

(learn more about this)

Miss Congeniality, but for dogs. Did we need this? We did not. Director Raja Gosnell has previously perpetrated two Smurfs movies and two Scooby-Doo movies, and I guess he felt that he needed to even out the ranks of his terrible talking-dog “comedies” since he only had the one, Beverly Hills Chihuahua. “Nobody makes talking dog movies anymore,” one of the talking dogs in this talking-dog movie explains. And yet here we are.

These are indeed dark times.

It’s funny cuz there’s a dog wearing sunglasses.

Stephen Amell Still Wants An Arrow/Supernatural Crossover

If there’s one thing that Stephen Amell wants to see happen on Arrow above all else, it’s a crossover with that other long-running CW drama, Supernatural. The Oliver Queen actor has been talking about his interest in teaming up with the Winchester Brothers for years now, and it seems like he’s still not over it.

Amell took to Twitter today to share a photo of himself with Jensen Ackles, who’s played Dean Winchester on Supernatural for a staggering 13 seasons, with another one confirmed to be on the way. The actor captioned his snap: “It’s the crossover we deserve” – further teasing fans with the possibility of it happening.

Unlike most TV crossovers, which can often chip away at the integrity of the shows in question, a union of Arrow and Supernatural would actually be perfectly feasible. After all, both have explored alternate universes before. In particular,

‘Show Dogs’ Film Review: Sloppy, Unfunny Comedy Merely a Collection of Pet Peeves

‘Show Dogs’ Film Review: Sloppy, Unfunny Comedy Merely a Collection of Pet Peeves
Families with canines are better off staying home and having an old-fashioned backyard frolic than trotting out to see “Show Dogs,” a panting, poorly trained entry in the live-action/talking animal genre that for once makes viewers long for the candy-colored, half-witted professionalism of third-tier Pixar-knockoff animation.

Had it all been digitally rendered and pushed to the edges of anthropomorphized wackiness, you could see where a Las Vegas dog show hiding nefarious doings and infiltrated by a mismatched pair of crimefighters might make for a suitably diverting afternoon for parents and kids alike.

But however vigorous was the effort on the part of hard-working trainers to get the movie’s various breeds — Rottweilers, pugs, Papillons and more — to hit their marks, the movie around them, as directed by Raja Gosnell feels no compulsion to be as dutiful in its call to entertain. String a few dozen of the cutest

Film Review: ‘Show Dogs’

Film Review: ‘Show Dogs’
In the cornball kiddie tradition of his “Scooby-Doo,” “Beverly Hills Chihuahua,” and “Smurfs” films, director Raja Gosnell’s “Show Dogs” combines live-action actors with real and CGI talking creatures in service of groan-worthy comedic adventure. The hero in question here is Max, an NYPD police pooch (voiced by Chris “Ludacris” Bridges) who’s forced to partner with Will Arnett’s FBI agent while going undercover as a pageant contestant. Think of it as “Miss Congeniality” for dogs, replete with the sort of slapstick humor, puerile gags and for-adults-only pop-culture references required of such endeavors. Its frantic pace should make it a mildly amusing diversion for the younger set, but its juvenile imagination (or lack thereof) is likely to drive anyone over the age of 7 barking mad.

During a Manhattan sting operation gone awry that puts him in direct conflict with federal agent Frank (Arnett), street-wise Rottweiler Max fails to save

Upfronts 2018: The Best, Worst and Wackiest Moments in Photos
Between the evil puppet, the missing dog and the introduction of a mysterious masked woman, this year’s Upfronts played out like an old episode of Scooby-Doo.

As always, the four-day affair — in which networks parade their new shows and stars in front of New York ad executives in the hopes of wooing their business — was one to remember, even if we’d rather forget some of it. (I did mention the evil puppet, right?)

There was music, there was dancing, there were way-too-soon jokes about sexual predators. And we’ve compiled the 25 most memorable moments, for better or worse,

‘Under The Silver Lake’ Film Review: Andrew Garfield Lives Dirtbag Dream in La Story

‘Under The Silver Lake’ Film Review: Andrew Garfield Lives Dirtbag Dream in La Story
How’s this for irony? Those very same qualities that allow “Under The Silver Lake” to so thoroughly evoke both the city of Los Angeles and a certain Angelino lifestyle also turn the film into a bit of a mess. Sprawling, indulgent and with many pockets of pleasure, David Robert Mitchell ‘s film – which premiered Tuesday night in Cannes – is L.A. in the same way that “Apocalypse Now” was Vietnam.

Think of it as “Ready Stoner One,” as it wrangles a rather overwhelming compendium of references, easter-eggs and winks to some of the foundational texts of contemporary millennial culture and offers them as clues in a Galaxy Brain conspiracy.

Channeling Shaggy from “Scooby-Doo,” Andrew Garfield stars as Sam, a grade-a underachiever living the dirtbag dream in (where else but) the city’s Eastside hipster neighborhood of Silver Lake. Rent is long past due and the threat of eviction looms alarmingly close,

Warner Bros. and Village Roadshow announced on Monday that a third installment in its “Sherlock Holmes” franchise starring Robert Downey Jr. as the famed detective is in the works, with a release date planned for Christmas Day 2020.

The film will be a follow-up to the 2011 film, “Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows,” which grossed $545 million worldwide.

There is no confirmation whether Downey or his co-star, Jude Law, will return to the series.

Downey won a Golden Globe in 2010 for his performance as Holmes in the first installment of the series, in which Holmes and Law’s Dr. Watson uncover a supernatural plot to expand the British Empire.

Downey is currently slated to star in “The Voyage of Dr. Dolittle” as the titular main character and will return to play Tony Stark in the sequel to “Avengers: Infinity War,” with both films due out next year.

Law, who will appear as Albus Dumbledore in Warner Bros.’ “Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald,” is currently filming the Marvel Studios’ film “Captain Marvel,” which will hit theaters next March.

Guy Ritchie directed the two previous “Holmes” films, which were also produced by Village Roadshow. Producers Susan Downey, Joel Silver and Lionel Wigram are returning to oversee this project, with “Narcos” co-creator Chris Brancato currently attached to write the script.

No director has been chosen for the project yet, with Ritchie currently directing Disney’s upcoming remake of “Aladdin,” which will come out next year.
