Plot Summary

Marie-Claire, congressman Ardouin 's daughter ,is in love with Jacques ,Jean Chouan's son ,one of the leaders of the counter-revolutionary rebels .A member of committee of public safety , Ardouin is put in charge of suppressing the royalist Chouans in Brittany .There,Marie-Claire meets again Jacques who fights with his father in the rebels ranks .But her father falls into the countess of Carquefous 's clutches :this Femme Fatale has joined the revolutionaries because she has never forgiven the aristocrats their contempt:she was born a plebeian .
