Doctor Who, and the casting of soap stars in the show

Mark Harrison Oct 24, 2017

As Doctor Who series 11 adds a trio of soap opera stars to its cast. And it makes sense...

What do Mandip Gill, Tosin Cole and Bradley Walsh have in common? Other than the fact that they're all joining Jodie Whittaker's Doctor as part of the regular cast of Doctor Who's next series, they've all acted in soap operas. Even 12 years since the show was revived by a former Coronation Street writer, that still makes some fans nervous.

Whatever your thoughts on Corrie, EastEnders and other serial dramas (to give them their proper name – the nickname comes from an outdated observation about soap companies sponsoring many of them), they're the best, most relevant training ground for young actors in British television. It's also more relevant to the experience of working on Doctor Who than you might necessarily expect.

We won't go so far as Doctor Who

Gilmore Girls Revival First Look: What's Lorelai and Luke's Big Surprise?!
Our latest Gilmore Girls revival first look is a riddle wrapped in a mystery inside an enigma set at the… legendary Black-White-Read Bookstore/Theatre!

The above image from Netflix’s forthcoming four-part revival finds Lorelai and Luke returning to the Stars Hollow landmark to attend a screening of (your guess is as good as ours!) alongside at least a dozen fellow residents (including Lane). But the big question posed by the photo concerns Lorelai’s cell phone — specifically, who’s on the other end of it and what

Doctor Who: 10 Ultimate Martha Jones Moments

BBC

It’s hard to believe that it’s now been 8 whole years (just count ‘em!) since Freema Agyeman made her Whoniversal debut (Ok, so she actually made it the year before when she guest starred in Series 2’s Army of Ghosts as Adeola, but that doesn’t really count, Ok!?) but it comes as further proof that time really does fly when you’re having fun.

The former Crossroads star (don’t worry, we never watched it either!) stepped aboard the Tardis as Martha Jones on Saturday 31st March 2007 and she wasted no time in establishing herself as one of the show’s most popular companions to date. Well, as far as the fans were concerned, anyway. The Doctor himself never really seemed all that bothered.

He was far too busy being hung up on his recent loss of Rose Tyler to acknowledge Martha as a bonafide human being

Ex-EastEnders and Hollyoaks stars launch TV series bid on Kickstarter

A group of former soap stars are aiming to launch a new TV comedy show with the help of Kickstarter.

Ex-Hollyoaks actress Terri Dwyer, former Crossroads star Jane Gurnett and EastEnders actor Mark Homer will appear in the upcoming series Storyline.

Creator Neil Anthony Docking and director Maxine Evans are offering parts in the show among other prizes if people pledge certain amounts on the crowdfunding site.

The project aims to raise £10,000 to produce three episodes to be shown online, in the hope of it then getting picked up by a TV channel.

Storyline will be set behind the scenes of a long-running radio drama about a group of people in a trendy block of flats in London.

Also among the cast are Cemetery Junction actor Steve Speirs, Holby City's Tilly Blackwood, former Coronation Street actor Ray Emmet Brown, The Wright Way's Joanne Matthews and Les Miserables singer Cameron Blakely.

Kate O'Mara 1939-2014: Obituary of Doctor Who, Dynasty star

Born in Leicester on August 10, 1939, Frances M Carroll would go on to become a screen idol under her chosen stage name of Kate O'Mara.

The daughter of actress Hazel Bainbridge and Raf flying instructor John F Carroll, O'Mara followed a stint at boarding school with enrolment at art school, before achieving her goal of becoming a full-time actress.

Making her stage debut in a production of Shakespeare's The Merchant of Venice in 1963, O'Mara soon moved into the popular world of television. Throughout the '60s, she appeared in such iconic series as Danger Man, The Champions, The Saint, The Avengers and Z-Cars.

Moving into the 1970s, O'Mara also found success on the big screen – starring in two Hammer Horror outings, The Vampire Lovers and The Horror of Frankenstein – but it was a return to television for BBC drama The Brothers that made her a household name.

Playing the leading role of tough businesswoman Jane Maxwell,

8 reasons why we love Les Dennis - Extras, Mavis, more

Les Dennis isn't exactly in our day-to-day thoughts, truth be told, but the news yesterday (January 23) that the light entertainment legend would be joining Coronation Street still managed to put a massive smile on our face. Les on the cobbles! Amazing!

To celebrate Les's biggest gig in quite some time, we look back at the celebrity good egg's life and career in order, and come up with eight reasons why we absolutely love him...

He's a talent show king!

Way back before Britain's Got Talent, The X Factor et al, there was New Faces, a notoriously tough competition where a panel of judges - including a youthful Noel Edmonds - marked variety acts on their "star quality", usually without chucking water over each other or trying to get into the papers with a particularly daring dress, as all that palaver is a modern talent show invention.

After doing the rounds

Soap operas: has the bubble burst?

From Coronation Street to EastEnders, soap operas once dominated British TV. Now, beset by disgraced stars and plummeting ratings, they are struggling to remain relevant

There was a weird interregnum on Coronation Street in 1984. Bernard Youens, the actor who had played Stan Ogden for three decades, died. But the character he played hadn't yet been written out. So Stan carried on regardless, unseen but living, while millions of the show's fans who had read Youens' obituaries knew the truth: the big lug was on borrowed time.

But how and when would the boozy, workshy, adorable slob who had spent 30 years twice a week in millions of British living rooms go? For several episodes his wife Hilda said Stan was sick in bed upstairs at no 13. How we, on the other end of the cathode ray tube, rolled our eyes.

And then, one night in November, Hilda revealed to the nation

Dancing on the Edge – Episode One Review

Dancing on the Edge. co. BBC Two

B Van Heusen

Chiwetel Ejiofor (The Shadow Line), John Goodman (Treme), Jenna-Louise Coleman (Doctor Who) and Paul McCartney’s ex-girlfriend Jane Asher (Crossroads) are among the biggest names in BBC Two’s jazzy new drama Dancing on the Edge. The show is centered around a group of black musicians in 1930s Britain. The talented troupe soon catch the eye of music journalist Stanley (Matthew Goode) who uses his considerable influence to land the men some well paid gigs. The band’s rapidly growing fanbase includes none other than the future King of England – Prince George, and for a time at least it appears as if everything they touch is bound to turn to gold. However, it wouldn’t be a realistic drama if everything went to plan and rivalries, skeletons in the closet and an under current of racism soon conspire to disrupt the band’s plans.

Sue Lloyd obituary

Actor known for her roles in The Ipcress File and Crossroads

The actor Sue Lloyd, who has died aged 72, exuded glamour and sophistication on screen in the 1960s, before finding renewed fame two decades later as Barbara Hunter in 714 episodes of the TV soap opera Crossroads. But it took two attempts by the serial's producers to persuade her to join a programme that was roundly abused by the critics.

"My initial reaction was to be a bit sniffy about it," Lloyd recalled in her 1998 autobiography, It Seemed Like a Good Idea at the Time. "The soap was renowned for its wobbly scenery, bizarre storylines and regular slaughtering by the critics. Why would I, just back from filming [Revenge of] The Pink Panther with Peter Sellers in the south of France and about to embark on the comedy The Upchat Line with John Alderton, want to get involved in a project like that?

Doctor Who complete reviews: Smith and Jones

Smith And Jones feels like a mini-reboot of Doctor Who. Just like Rose did in 2005, Smith And Jones launches right into the new title sequence without a pre-credits teaser. In a sense, this is the dawning of a new era, since Rose is – for now – out of the equation. In her place comes Martha Jones, unofficially known as the Raw Deal Companion.

Martha has some big shoes to fill, since – despite the rather iffy Season Two characterisation – Rose was still riding ahead in popularity. Freema Agyeman was chosen to play Martha: at the time, a lesser known actress who'd appeared in the reboot of Crossroads and of course, as Adeola in Army Of Ghosts in what was essentially a dummy run for her full season. However, Freema got her big break with the 2007 season of Doctor Who, and since then, has become a regular face on British TV, most notably in ITV's Law And Order.

News: Freema: Nothing Confirmed

  • Kasterborous
Freema Agyeman has been interviewed in the Manchester Evening News recently, with Law & Order (Mondays, 9pm ITV1) once again the main talking point. Of course in amongst all of that legal jargon and references to Freema's time on Crossroads and childhood dreams of being a doctor while her sister dreamed of being a lawyer, there's the obligatory Doctor Who questions. As of the time of the interview, there's no confirmation - certainly none that Freema will admit to: “I know...
