Cheerful horror musical.

"Sannata" is actually my first horror movie made by Ramsay brothers. The plot revolved around a series of murders taking place on a hill station and the lead pair trying to solve the mystery. As usual for Hindi cinema the film is full of cheerful romantic songs and silly comedy. The murders are quite effective, but the thrills are sparse. The direction of "Sannata" is done by Ramsay brothers Tulsi and Shyam. The brothers are well known for a slew of Hindi horror movies from 70's and 80's including "Darwaza" and "Purana Mandir".There is a great hanging scene and a tiny bit of blood. So if you like slasher/giallo sub-genre mixed with romantic musical give "Sannata" a chance.6 out of 10 and that's being generous.

I recently watched Sannata and found it quiet satisfying. The movie contains all the elements of thrill, horror and suspense. The subtle performances by seasoned actors add an extra punch to the storyline. The movie is also noted for portraying various comedians at different time slots.

A wealthy businessman Girdhari Lal is murdered by his cousin Dhanpat Rai (Bharat Kapoor) for the sake of wealth. Girdhari Lal's daughter Sapna (Sarika) is in love with Vinod (Deepak Parashar). Dhanpat Rai despises Sapna's relationship with Vinod and shifts her to a hostel. However the two decide to go straight with Dhanpat Rai and head to his grand manor. Soon the lovers find Dhanpat Rai dead and stuffed in a suitcase. Sapna and Vinod pair up with Police to speed up the investigation. Meanwhile the other members in the manor are being brutally killed by a burnt-face assailant, who has plans of his own.

Sannata has several creepy moments but what seems to be truly appealing is the use of sepia-tinted background, which makes it a perfect midnight movie. The story is tightly woven and no action in the film seems useless or inappropriate. Although not close to 'Veerana', 'Dahshat' or 'Do Gaz Zameen Ke Neeche' by any means, Sannata surely is far better than most of the other thrillers.
