Rock star Charlotte Smith quits at the height of her fame and buys the American diner on the outskirts of her home town so she can settle down with her builder boyfriend David Doyle. He invites his daft elder brother Kidder to become the chef while the nervous Ronnie gives up her life as "Charlotte" in a copycat band to become waitress. The Border Cafe becomes a meeting place for all sorts of curious characters and a centre of intrigue. But as the cafe takes off, the whole notion of whose life depends on whose starts to shift with dramatic consequences. Written by Andy Roberts - Border Cafe Webmaster <bordercafe@bbc.co.uk>

Pay attention!
5 January 2002 | by mle-2See all my reviews

This is a very cleverly written series which deserves an intelligent audience. The best lines are not paraded in front of you but said so casually by the actors that if you aren't paying attention, you will miss it. Witty, entertaining and heartbreaking with a great cast and a fabulous soundtrack this series has to be one of the best productions from the BBC for years - and so refreshing after all those costume dramas!
