Storyline

A young boy named Yugi Moto solves an Ancient Egyptian Puzzle and brings forth a dark and powerful alter ego. Whenever he and his friends are threatened by evil, this alter ego breaks out of the confines of the Millenium Puzzle and challenges wrongdoers to the Shadow Games: Life or Death situations that test the true nature of human beings. Those that lose or cheat suffer serious penalties that result in losing their sanity or even their lives. Along with his friends Joey, Tristan, Téa and Miho; Yugi and his dark counterpart faces off against foes such as Seto Kaiba: The ruthless champion of the duel monsters card game; and Ryo Bakura, who possesses the Millenium Ring containing a spirit more brutal than Yami Yugi. Will Yugi and his friends succeed or will they lose their souls? Written by payback1017

Many of the character's name's are puns or play on words. For example, Mai Valentine can be taken to be 'My Valentine'. Rex Raptor's name involves the 'rex' in T-rex, and raptor, which in Latin means thief and is attributed to several dinosaur species. Weavel Underwood refers to the insect group of weavels, which burrow into wood. See more »

Alternate Versions

This is the first season of Yuugiou. The storyline follows the first manga arc from before the duel monsters game really began to be played excessively. Yuugi was not aware of his other self at this time, and his other self forces those who have done harm to Yuugi or his friends to play a batsu geemu. (Penalty Game) This series is commonly mistaken by fans of the English dub for "Yuugiou: Duel Monsters" as being the series they know and love. The English dub skipped over this series however, and it was never dubbed. See more »

I actually like it.
8 August 2011 | by Walter_SkinnerSee all my reviews

Long before Little Kurbioh started making his videos I watched the original series of Yugioh and it's spin off Yugioh Gx. Even though I'm fully aware that it's just an excuse to sell cards of a trading card game I actually think the series has a lot of charm to it. The villains are all either scary or just plain funny, the duels can sometimes be exciting, and Yugioh is the only show I can think of that actually has great filler. In fact some of my favorite seasons of the show (The Noah Virtual World saga and the Waking the Dragons arc) While the dub by 4kids is littered with horrible voice acting, lame jokes, and plenty of cringe worthy moments the original Japanese sub had amazing opening and closing credits and adds a lot of substance to the story.
