The author is a cynical, somewhat overbearing man who has a very poor idea of woman. There are times when the one woman nearly makes him alter his mind, but she, although she treasures a secret love for him, is chilled by the opinion she knows that he holds of her and her sex. One night at a Bohemian gathering, the author, in the course of an argument, makes a wager with a friend who champions the women's cause. The author with a smile, states that he has a test that no woman can withstand. The author has a cigarette box in which he keeps his own cigarettes, which bear his monogram. He empties the box and fills it with smoke and his friend manages to leave the box in the presence of a woman, making some remark about it as he goes. The first woman "falls," the second woman "falls" also. She however, seeking to cover the humiliation and annoyance, fills the box with pipe smoke, but the author quickly detects the imposition and is more cynical than ever.
