Sex & Nudity

  • Not nearly as much as a lot of HBO shows, and it's rarely graphic either. A lot of romantically charged sex scenes with kissing, making them less explicit.
  • Occasional nudity but mostly from dead bodies
  • Occasional male graphic nudity on dead bodies. Female breasts are occasional as well. Sexual scenes are almost always fully clothed.
  • Some strong sex scenes throughout the show, some are brief but others can extend for a whole scene.
  • Teenagers have sex in some scenes. In one particular instance a teenage girl sucks a guys toe before sex and then he tells everyone at school about it.
  • One scene is shot in a Las Vegas strip club in season one.
  • The sexual dialogue in this show is very graphic.

Violence & Gore

  • The actual violence ranges from mild to severe. The main characters run a funeral home so most episodes deal with death in some way or another. Sometimes the bodies are shown, rarely in extremely gruesome matter.
  • A mentally deranged lunatic walks into an office and shoots people with a shotgun. Blood sprays onto his face and walls. He then sticks a gun in his mouth and kills himself.
  • Many characters in this show die from suicide and it is shown in a very graphic manner.
  • Every episode begins with a death/deaths. Not very gory but still can be disturbing. The person who died is then dealt with by the Funeral Home, which often but not too frequently will include the audience being shown graphic, bloody images of reconstructive surgery. This includes images of cracked open skulls and brain matter, which can be quite disturbing.
  • There are violent images and sequences of murder and accident scenes.
  • Examples of violence include a man getting cut in half by an elevator. His corpse is shown later. A young gay man gets beaten to death. Not much is shown, but it is very upsetting. David gets car jacked by a disturbed individual in one episode.

Profanity

  • Frequent uses of "fuck", "shit", "god damnit", "son of a bitch", and "asshole".
  • Infrequent uses of "cunt" and "cocksucker"
  • These expletives are typically uttered in quick succession during scenes of emotional outbursts, as well as during confrontations in between characters.
  • This show is rated R, so of course it has extravagant swearing.

Alcohol, Drugs & Smoking

  • Nearly every character is shown experimenting with drugs or alcohol at one point in the series.
  • College kids are shown doing drugs and getting drunk at parties.
  • Drug use is prevalent in all seasons. Lots of casual drinking and use of marijuana. Many drugs are shown ecstasy, cocaine, crack, opiates (Vicodin),ketamine, shrooms, LSD, AMT, some teens shown smoking crystal meth in the pilot episode. Addiction or experimentation is a minor plot point for some characters.

Frightening & Intense Scenes

  • The show can be very heavy at times with many emotionally intense scenes. The storylines and conflicts the characters experience are very real and many people will be able to relate.
  • Rated R for pervasive language, strong sexual content, nudity, drug use, some violence, suicide and disturbing images.
  • Brenda's brother Billy is severely bipolar and often engages in dangerous and creepy behavior during the first season. Multiple scenes with him are very uncomfortable in Season 1.
  • An episode opens with a very dark and disturbing sequence of a man walking through an office shooting people with a shotgun. Afterwards he sticks a gun in his mouth and kills himself.
  • The show is full of very bizarre and somewhat scary dream sequences.
  • "Six Feet Under" is incredibly dark at times and can be at bit much but the purpose of the dark material is to show how life is full of dark and unexpected moments that don't seem to have an explanation and how death is very real and can happen to everyone in the most unexpected way.
  • Nate's entire character is incredibly tragic from beginning to end.
