- Kabir Suri (Rakesh Roshan) is an established businessman & an established flirt. Kabir meets Indu (Tina Munim) & Nisha (Smita Patil) (Cousin sisters) at a wedding. He has lust for Indu (who is the rebel brat type), but also likes Nisha as she is simple minded & shy. He gets married to Nisha (Smita Patil) as Kabir wanted no interference from his wife in his personal life, and they live in harmony. Indu feels insulted by Nisha when Kabir chooses her above Indu. She swears revenge.
Kabir involves Nisha in his charitable activities & even gets her to inaugurate a Women's welfare center, Aadhar. Kabir continues his fucking with other women post marriage. Then Nisha gives birth to a baby-girl, and during her pregnancy, when she is hospitalized, Kabir has an affair with Indu (Tina Munim) when Indu comes over to stay at Kabir's on the pretense of taking care of Nisha during her pregnancy. When Nisha returns home, she is shocked to find Indu has been sleeping with her husband, as well as using her clothes. To her shock Indu has no intention of leaving Kabir for any reason whatsoever.
Nisha is thrown out of the house by Kabir when she confronts him & forces him to chose between Indu & her. Kabir throws Nisha out but keeps the baby girl. Nisha joins Aadhar & tries to find a job, but is met with molestation & exploitation every where. She plans a charity program with Aadhar girls, which is covered by Doordarshan cameraman Alok Nath (Rajesh Khanna). Alok is impressed with Nisha's performance on stage & helps her to get a job in Doordarshan as a performing artist & anchor. The years roll by & Nisha is successful in her career & has a great friendship with Alok.
Alok accidentally discovers that Nisha has a writing talent and has maintained a diary. He encourages her to get her diary published as her first novel & even gives her a name "Asha" as Nisha's literary alter ego. Nisha meets her daughter Pooja accidentally at a party where Kabir and Indu are also invited. Indu insults Nisha & asks her to stay away when Nisha displays her love for Pooja. Stung by the insult, Nisha immerses herself in her writing & soon becomes a very successful & rich writer. Alok wants to marry Nisha, but she respectfully refuses as she wants to conform to societal norms.
Year pass & Nisha grows old. Kabir & Indu are in deep debt & regret their ill treatment of Nisha. Kabir doesn't know Nisha is now Asha. Kabir's publishing business is not doing well & he goes to beg Asha for a novel. Nisha agrees to write him a novel when Kabir gets her all sentimental about Pooja growing up and being of marriage age. From the money Kabir arranges a grand wedding for Pooja, but Nisha cant get herself to attend & makes Kabir promise that he will keep her identity secret from Pooja. Alok again proposes to Nisha and this time she does not refuse.
