How Showbiz TV Is Adapting to a Changing News Climate

Entertainment Tonight invented the showbiz newsmagazine genre, and 38 years later it remains the top-rated show of its type.

The explosion of media options this decade has caused viewership for shows like Et, Access and Extra — all of which have been around more than 20 years — to decline some (along with most of ad-supported programming).

All three shows are down substantially in viewers this decade, a decline similar to every series shown on broadcast television. The entertainment newsmagazines have had fairly stable audiences the past couple seasons, and Et ranks in the top 10 among all syndicated shows for 2018-19.

But they ...

Alexis Ren and Alan Bersten reveal if they’ll kiss if they win ‘Dancing with the Stars’
Alexis Ren and Alan Bersten‘s first (?) kiss was recorded for posterity as “Dancing with the Stars” aired it during their rehearsal package two weeks ago. They have not yet smooched on the live shows, but there will be no better time to do so than if they win the Mirrorball trophy on Monday’s finale.

“We don’t plan ahead like that,” Bersten tells “Extra” (watch above) of a post-win liplock. “I don’t know, I don’t know,” Ren deflects.

So you’re saying there’s a chance? With the way their showmance has unfolded the past three weeks, we wouldn’t put it past them to seal their win with a kiss. It’d be just what Tptb ordered.

‘Dancing with the Stars’ judge Bruno Tonioli says what we’re all thinking about Grocery Store Joe: ‘How bad can you get?’

‘Dancing with the Stars’ judge Bruno Tonioli says what we’re all thinking about Grocery Store Joe: ‘How bad can you get?’
Bruno Tonioli‘s mind works in mysterious ways, but the “Dancing with the Stars” judge read our minds when “Extra” host and “Dancing” alum Mario Lopez asked him for his thoughts on Joe “Grocery Store Joe” Amabile.

“The thing is, they have a good go. I mean, how bad can you get?” Tonioli said with a laugh (watch above).

Amabile improved this week, by his standards, scoring a 17 for his jive with Jenna Johnson, up two points from last week, when the “Bachelorette” star overcame an 11-point deficit with Bachelor Nation fan votes to stay in the competition. That improbable showing last week left Tinashe a victim of the latest “shocking elimination” on the show. “I was very disappointed that Tinashe got kicked out,” Tonioli lamented. “If you don’t vote, it’s not going to happen. You have to really back these people up.”
