A man was arrested by Canada Customs and Revenue Agency in July of 2003 for importing a copy into Canada, on the grounds that the movie constituted obscene material.
The scene where the Mother slaps Anais's face, took 13 takes. The last one, which is shown in the movie, is for real.
Libero De Rienzo wore a prosthetic erect penis in the sex scene.
In South Korea, this is the first movie to be passed containing sex scenes with nudity. Previously due to strict censorship, all sex scenes that included nudity had to be edited or deleted.
Anaïs Reboux's mother lied to her about her dog dying in order to get her to cry for the crying scenes.
In reference to the rape scene, Catherine Breillat said: "I didn't take an actor to smash the window, but a stuntman. He had to be very, very precise in his gestures. When Anaïs is thrown to the ground, it had to be very precise so that she does not hurt herself. I knew that, for Anaïs, it had to be a game, not a really sexual scene. But I didn't know how to do it. I had invented in the night. I couldn't touch Anaïs. She was only fourteen. We cannot say to ourselves that she is an actress. Major or almost major, she is truly a little girl. Very, very mature from the point of view of thought, but from the point of view of the body, she is a very little girl. There is real responsibility. So there, we are very quickly in the act of pedophilia, very quickly in a scene that becomes criminal. I thought a lot about how to do this scene. You had to cheat. The impression had to be very strong. I wasn't going to have her take off her panties, so there were two. There was a tracking shot. The stuntman threw her to the ground, very gently. After that, the tracking shot got closer. What is violent is that you suddenly see the close-up. We can see his chest, we no longer see the rest of the body. But we receive the bottom of the dress, like that on the face, so we know that the dress is raised. Then my assistant gave the actor, the stuntman, a second pair of panties and he pushed them into her mouth."
Included among the "1001 Movies You Must See Before You Die", edited by Steven Schneider.
In a behind scene interview, Anaïs Reboux talked about her nude sequence: "In the scene in the bathroom, I lift my nightgown and you see my breasts. At first I wasn't happy about it. Then I thought, 'Go on, do it!' And I did. I'd never blame Catherine. If she wants something, I know she wants it, and she'll get it."
Though far less explicit than Romance (1999), the script for Sisarelleni (2001) still raised concerns about possible censorship. "I had a big concern about censorship because in the last scene you could see Anais's breasts. I actually wanted her not to have breasts, but her body changed between casting and the end of shooting. It's funny that, if she had been flat-chested, it wouldn't have been an issue", director Catherine Breillat said.
