The sound has been found in the form of an old Edisonian recording cylinder. The cylinder was repaired, then Walter Murch ACE MPSE synced the film to the correct music in (I believe) 2002. Total running time is approximately 17 seconds.

Storyline

"A little while ago there was a great convention of women's clubs of America. Mrs. Edison is interested in women's clubs and their work and she decided to entertain the Presidents of the various clubs at the Convention. Edison entered into the plan, and when 147 club women visited his workshop he showed them a working model of his new Kinetograph, for that is the name he has given to the most wonderful of all his wonderful inventions. "The surprised and pleased club women saw a small pine box standing on the floor. There were some wheels and belts near the box, and a workman who had them in charge. In the top of the box was a hole perhaps an inch in diameter. As they looked through this hole they saw the picture of a man. It was a most marvellous picture. It bowed and smiled and waved its hands and took off its hat with the most perfect naturalness and grace. Every motion was perfect. There was not a hitch or a jerk. No wonder Edison chuckled at the effect he produced with his ... Written by The New York Sun, 28 May 1891

Trivia

Although this is often incorrectly credited as the first film made in the USA, it was, in fact the second. Dickson's Monkeyshines No. 1, seems to actually be the first American film, though it was not shown to the public upon completion. This was, however, the very first American (and Edison) film shown to public audiences and the press. See more »

This is a test, only a test.

This is a test, only a test.

This film is a short sequence used to show off a brand new machine called a Kinetoscope.

There is no plot, no clichés, no hamming it up, no stereotypes, no awards, no acting, no directing, no writing, no producing, no nothing.

Commenting on this film like it was a feature with a script, actor, and director, or commenting on Dicksons acting is ridiculous.

He was an inventor not an actor.

Commenting on the movie industry, which didn't yet exist, is even more ridiculous.

They just wanted to welcome the people who viewed the film on the Kinetoscope. So they told Dickson, who helped invent the thing, to stand in front of the camera and bow and take off his hat. You know, like a greeting.

The reason that it was repeated 6 times is because it was only 3 seconds long.

None of this matters as it was only used to show off the machine, not the film.

I repeat, this is a test, only a test.
