Well plotted thriller uses Calabrian mafia as background.
The one is not overshadowed by Germi's IN NOME DELLE LEGGE or the GODFATHER films of which it can be seen as a critique, showing the structured, controlled crime tradition to be based on class advantage and unscrupulousness. The work "honor" is not used.
The trainee lawyer finds from blood types that he is not Franco Nero's son and uses his training to trace his origins to a Calabrian village where the cops claim the Mafia is now subject to the law but a prominent citizen has been kidnaped.Intriguing scenes with his one time nanny, her fetching daughter who shames the heir to the local heavy and the rogue shepherd, complete with abduction by masked men, casual murder and careful local Mareschales, keep the plot developing more effectively than in comparable US mini series until a soso shoot-up finale.
Excellent unfamiliar cast and good production.
