Allerede på forsommeren 1944 begynte folk i Øst-Finnmark å flytte inn i gruvegangene på Bjørnvatn. Nazistenes ordre var klar: Hele landsdelen skulle tilintetgjøres, og alt folk tvangssendes sydover. Men helt slik gikk det ikke. Innen oktober var fjellet befolket av to til tre-tusen mennesker, kvinner, barn & eldre for det meste.
